Avatar m tn To help answer your question, your first step is to understand the Glycemic Index (GI) of foods. By understanding the GI it will help you get better control of your diabetes. Go to this FAQ page for an explanation of GI, then click the button "Compare your diet" for chart comparisons of various types of foods. http://www.lowglycemicdiet.com/lowglycemicdietfaqs.html Other related GI links http://tinyurl.

My legs get weak and painful within minutes of standing or walking....
Avatar f tn There is a definite association between gluten allergy (Celiac disease) and epilepsy. And you explanation of how gluten sensitivity affects vitamin B6 and subsequently causes hypoglycemia, is also appropriate. Glucose is essential for the neurons as their nutrition. If the nerve cells do not get glucose even for a short period, they start functioning differently. There are abnormal signals created and it may lead to seizures.

20620809 tn?1504362969 com/daily/nutrition/glycemic-index-chart/ The food is listed, along with the serving size in parenthesis, then the glycemic value. The lower the glycemic value, the better. There are a lot of other lists available on the internet - just do a search for "low glycemic foods". Most vegetables "qualify" as low glycemic, except things like white potatoes, etc.
Avatar m tn From what I have read, it appears that when deciding which foods are best to eat, Glycemic Load is even more important that Glycemic Index. With that in mind, I am having some trouble making decisions pertaining to the all-important Rice, Potato, and Bread categories. My doc says stay away from white, and that brown is much better, i.e. whole grain bread is preferable to white bread, and brown rice is preferable to white rice.
Avatar n tn Frank, My comment doesn't directly answer your question, but I hope it's a bit helpful for you. I'm certain your whole family is concerned now with managing your son's diabetes and trying to learn about the disease & possible prevention. It is quite unusual for a youngster to be diagnosed with Type 2, altho' it is not unheard of, especially in some high risk ethnic groups where the children are obese. Has your 8 year old been seen by an endocrinologist?
Monster http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/glycemic-index-diet/MY00770 There are many others, as well. Simply google "low glycemic diet" and there will be a lot of articles that come up. Some even give examples of where different foods rank in the glycemic index. We all have some difficulty getting used to new diets...... it hasn't been easy for me, either.
1645208 tn?1301072177 But instead of jumping into a low carb, no sugar diet, I suggest you do some homework first and research foods that have a low glycemic index. These are the foods you want to eat. (This diet works for anybody, really, but it may be especially effective for you.) You can find this information free by Googling "Low glycemic index foods." Second, start counting calories. This is NOT fun. But it's free and effective. It just takes time.
Avatar n tn Foods that have good fiber content are more easy on her blood sugar. Have you heard of the glycemic index? It is a value that shows, essentially, the effect on your blood sugars. Foods with high glycemic index are generally ones that make blood sugars rise quickly, so they are generally ones you want to avoid. The exception is carrots, which has a high glycemic index, but is so good for you that you need to keep eating them.
Avatar f tn Thyroid dysfunction (hyperthyroidism) is linked to worsening glycemic control and increased insulin resistence, both strong indicators in pre-diabetes and obvious problems in diabetes. Therefore, the answer appears to be yes in the case of hyperthyroidism. Where this becomes difficult is that Graves can cause hyper-thyroidism, but in some cases it shuts down thyroid gland activity, producing hypothyroidism.
3224201 tn?1380377795 Hi, I had problems getting pregnant, as well. I went on birth control pills when I was 16, because of menstrual pain and acne. I went off of it at age 20 to try and get pregnant. We tried for a year and then we stopped trying for 2 years and started trying again for the next 12 years until I was almost 35. I never got a single period on my own for this period of time. I had testing done when I was around 24 by a fertility doctor and was diagnosed with PCOS. I am an Ultrasound Technologist.
Avatar f tn While I agree that adequate amounts of fat are necessary for a healthy diet, I feel that they, like most other foods need to be eaten in moderation. Aiming for a low glycemic diet will probably serve you better... low glycemic foods are those that don't spike the blood sugar. Eating foods that spike the blood sugar causes insulin levels to spike, as well and if those foods aren't used quickly for energy, they will be stored as fat.
Avatar n tn Diabeties is a serious disease that compromises a person's natural defense system allowing other diseases to cause additional harm and complications. There are several cases similar to your sister's condition on the web which indicate that she is most likely suffering from gastrointestinal problems associated with the diabetes. It appears that GI problems in diabetes are quite common but rarely properly diagnosed.
4319578 tn?1352739861 “The influence of diet on the induction and aggravation of acne has been a matter of intense debate over the last few years. The pioneering observation by Cordain et al. (1), who demonstrated that acne is a disease of Western civilization and is absent in populations consuming Palaeolithic diets without refined sugars, grains, milk and dairy products, resulted in a paradigm change.
Tbd There are different types of carbs> complex and simple> the latter consists mostly of pastry Neither the glycemic index and the glycemic load was mentioned in your comments> Many endocrinologists recommend either the GI or t he GL
20931051 tn?1694244079 Low Glycemic Index: Kiwi has a low glycemic index (GI), which means it has a relatively mild impact on blood sugar levels when compared to high-GI foods like white bread or sugary snacks. Fiber Content: Kiwi is rich in dietary fiber, which can help regulate blood sugar levels by slowing down the absorption of carbohydrates. Fiber also promotes a feeling of fullness, potentially reducing overeating.

Avatar m tn Your mom's A1c is great!! Every doctor I have been too want your A1c's under 7. Any illness can raise glucose levels, but I don't understand why they fed her high glycemic foods---this just doesn't make sense. When to doctor takes your mom's glucose at the office or hospital, are they using the hand held meters or taking blood draws?

Avatar f tn Eating a low glycemic diet (foods that do not spike the blood sugar, in turn spiking insulin levels), getting adequate exercise and losing weight (if overweight) will often/usually turn pre-diabetes around. Low glycemic foods are complex carbs that take longer for the stomach to digest; they include non starchy vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, low/now fat dairy, nuts, seeds, etc.
Avatar n tn I have been taking birth control since 1st of February to regulate my periods. The pill in question is Maxim (ethinyl estradiol 0.03mg and 2mg dienogest). For the first month it was OK, no side effects other then some loss of libido. After talking with doc about it he changed it to another one with levonorgestrel instead of dienogest.
687527 tn?1227108766 Less carbs more protein. I don't think the all Atkins diet is healthy for but for someone with sugar issues you may want to eat foods that are low on the glycemic index. Don't cut carbs entirely as that isn't a good idea, just try to replace some carbs with proteins. Look up the glycemic index in the internet and try eating more of the foods that are low on that chart. Sweet potatoes are a carb but are actually low on the glycemic index so are actually really good for you.
