I would like to see the medical profession research further into the connections with gluten and geographic tongue, as it may well be an early indication of gluten intolerance, a disease that almost killed my son. I do not believe this is pure coincidence, as gluten intolerant people have the villi on the intestinal wall worned down by gluten, a similar thing to what occurs on the tongue - the protection is eroded away.
But that is not the only cause of Geographic Tongue. I have eliminated my geographic tongue and helped many others eliminate theirs without eliminating Gluten. Although our doctor recommended vitamin regimen does include eliminating gluten. That being said if gluten is your problem doing the other things obviously won't help but if that isn't the cause there are still a lot of other options. No, geographic tongue is normal, and somewhat hereditary. I have had it for years and have also been tested for HIV multiple times. Plus, my neice has it on her tongue, so more than likely you are ok. You aren't going to get HIV from being near someone anyway, unless you are having sex with them unprotected. Just use protection.

Got what appears to be a rash on my tongue and after looking it up it appears to be geographic tongue and I was wondering if geographic tongue was indicative of any diseases. I recently posted on the HIV forum and was told I was in a no risk category but maybe Im just being stupid but I recently developed this rash that I never noticed before and was hoping for any insight on whether this is a symptom of any diseases. I also drink a lot and have been stressed a lot so maybe those contribute.

I've had a sore tongue for quite a while now and it has been worrying me. I have whitish spots in my tongue and they burn a little bit. It's very uncomfortable. I thought I could have thrush and when I went to the doctor, she didn't think I have thrush and it looks ok, with just a few irritated spots. She gave me a mouth rinse to make it better, but it actually makes it hurt even more, and it usually bothers me more on the side and tip of my tongue.
