Geodon vs saphris

Common Questions and Answers about Geodon vs saphris

geodon

Avatar m tn Well my medication is going to have to be changed because of the reaction I had to it when it was increased and I didn't gain any weight on Geodon so I was wondering what other antipsychotics have a low chance of causing weight gain like Geodon because I used to be fat and got picked on a lot for it and don't want to go through that again.
Avatar f tn So, My daughter has bipolar, we've tried a few medications. Abilify caused massive wieght gain - so we've switched to Geodon. She's been taking the Geodon for over a yr now and we've had this problem that I can't seem to change with anyother variable.... thus I'm asking if anyone else has this issue with Geodon.
Avatar m tn I have taken Geodon, Haldol, Saphris, Risperdal, Seroquel, and Fanapt in just a year and a few months. Also just knowing that Fanapt can cause Tardive Dyskinesia scares me and would have me constantly paranoid if it is going to start. I wanna know if it is a good decision to take this drug until my numbness completely subsides and then stop it. I will bring all of this to the attention of my psychiatrist, but i just wanted to know what you think. Thank you.
440120 tn?1211724496 The atypical antipsychotics (Risperdal through Abilify, Fanapt and Saphris) have a safer side effect profile than the typicals (Thorazine through Haldol) in that they have half the statistical potential of causing tardive dyskinesia (a long term side effect which is a movement disorder of all current antipsychotics except for Clozaril). They also have far more of a mood stabilization effect and have been specifically FDA approved for this purpose.
Avatar f tn It is often activating though so if you have that problem you could ask your psychiatrist if you could take it in the morning. Along with Abilify and Geodon, Fanapt and Saphris are two new FDA approved antipsychotics (approved for bipolar as well) that have less of a potential for weight gain. See what happens and keep informed and discuss available options with your psychiatrist.
202665 tn?1248806733 Geodon can cause side effects such as you mentioned and I could not tolerate it either. Abilify can be activating for some people. That's not uncommon. The two newest antipsychotics that I believe were approved as mood stabilizers are Fanapt and Saphris but I have never tried those so I am not personally familiar with their side effect profile.
Avatar f tn ok so i have bipolar 1 disorder and i stopped taking abilify on my own because of my weight gain and my doctor said i have to take sumthing so he put me on geodon...i took it last nite and i woke up this morning light headed the i took the pill i was surpose to this morning and it made me feel worst like i was about to faint so i went to sleep and i slept for 6 hours and 30 minutes and im still sleepy so i mite have to go back to abilify...
Avatar f tn All antipsychotics CAN make you gain weight, but some are worse than others. Geodon is supposed to be weight neutral, and Abilify mostly weight neutral (won't make you gain or lose). Saphris has gotten a lot of good reviews in the weight department, and I believe Latuda has as well, but these are both still brand only, which might affect insurance coverage (and will affect cost). Unfortunately, there's no way to know for sure if a med will cause you problems without trying it first.
Avatar f tn I took Geodon but not with Triliptal also. I was allergic to Geodon, but that was my body.
7773352 tn?1394065574 I am a 20 year old female and almost every medicine that I've taken for bipolar has caused me to gain weight. I've been taking Viibryd for my depression for a few years but it isn't enough. I took Depakote, and gained weight from my increase in appetite. Then I tried Seroquel, which worked good but I ate so much and gained weight. Then I tried Saphris, and gained 15 pounds! I couldn't stop eating.
Avatar f tn The other atypical antipsychotics (also used as mood stabilizers) that have less of a potential of weight gain are Abilify, Fanapt and Saphris. You could ask your psychiatrist about those options. I had similar reactions to Zeldox but each person responds differently to each medication.
1052851 tn?1307741160 true ziprazidone (geodon) is an atypical AP but not to be confused with olanzapine (zyprexa). The latter put tremendous weight gain but very potent.
1249261 tn?1268868936 Every antipsychotic has the potential of weight gain, the least 3 being Abilify, Fanapt and Saphris. With Geodon, everyone including myself when I took it is required to get an EKG because of the concern of heart arrythmia. The only mood stabilizer that can cause weight loss and is also specifically prescribed for this effect is Topomax but generally its only used as a supplemental mood stabilizer and it has some side effects of its own of concern.
Avatar f tn Just last night I began reducing my dosage of Geodon with the goal of getting off of it altogether. My doctor suggested switching to the new med Saphris but I researched it and found that it has the same type of side effects and negative long term effects as Geodon. I know that most anti-psychotics, which I only take for Bipolar II are alike. Don't want to take any but want help with my ultra-rapid mood cycling.
Avatar n tn You could ask your doctor about a specific diet that would help you cut back sugar and carbohydrates and help reduce weight and regular exercise is essential as well. Every antipsychotic has a different potential to cause weight gain (Abilify, Fanapt and Saphris being the least) and if it becomes a severe concern you could ask your psychiatrist about other currently available options but each person reacts differently to each medication.
4998202 tn?1362222175 I will begin taking Saphris tonight and I was just curious if it could cause sleepwalking.. My doctor is putting me on this medication because I am unable to sleep but maybe 3 hours a night.. I had legionairre's disease in 2011 and since then I have had major problems with lack of sleep..
Avatar m tn My 16 yr old daughter has been on Zoloft for about 4 yrs now, she was diagnosed with bipolar last year in Feb 09 when she got baker acted and was put on abilify for 10 months. These medications did nothing for her except the abilify made her gain 40 pounds. Then she was baker acted again in Dec 09 and the Dr put her on Geodon. My first gut instinct told me not to allow her to go on this med but after talking with the Dr I agreed.
Avatar m tn Had a lot of sexual dysfunction on it. 'nuff said. Sad thing is it seemed like it was going to work the best out of all the antipsychotics I've tried so far. Geodon was the one I had heart problems on and had to be taken off of but I think quite a few of them can affect the heart.
Avatar n tn is anyone on saphris? my pdoc changed me from seroquel and abilify to this new med, which i start tonight. the other 2 was causing my blood sugar and pressure to start going up. i felt fine taking this combo but don't want to take 2 more meds for blood sugar and blood pressure.
2010625 tn?1329372056 I have tried several different antipsychotics and keep getting bad side effects with them that have been so bad I can't take them. I have been on seroquel, risperdal, geodon, abilify, and currently on latuda. On the latuda if I take more than 40mgs I get akathisia real bad, but on the 40mgs I start rapid cycling. My doc said I could try saphris, but I am sick of trying these antipsychotics. He said then the next option would be to try lithium. I am currently on lamictal 200mgs, latuda 40mgs.
Avatar f tn I realize the underlying issue is depression/coping. Today I saw a NP and was prescribed Saphris 5mg SL every night and started on Lamictal with a tapering increase in dose over the next month. Im not comfortable with the Saphris though,,,its an "atypical antipsychotic" and used for people with Bipolar I disorder and schizophrenia????? Any suggestions,,I am trying to listen to the psych people as they know best,,so I will take as prescibed for now.
1772374 tn?1326246237 So i have given up on Saphris for wise reasons. The Saphris gave me restless leg/arm syndrome last night, today; clearer thinking while at the same time negative and maybe paranoid, and some random 1-minute spells of agression. Back to SSRIs with me! I feel like i've played this game forever, there must be so much money in psychological medications.
Business woman1 More specifically, Cymbalta (120 mg) and Saphris 30 mg. I was removed off of saphris last october, and was put on wellbutrin 150mg and had a TERRIBLE reaction to it. now think I am experiencing side effects that (in my opinion) appear to look like adrenal problems (fatigue, unneccesary anxiety, muscle spasms/twitching, problems walkng, craving sugars etc.
Avatar f tn I literally have pitting edema in both my legs from the knee down. I had ran out of seroquel and took saphris in between and the swelling went away some but now I restarted the Seroquel and my ankles look like cankles...
Avatar f tn I am going through my 3rd bout of panic attacks (lasting 1+ weeks VS. one every once in a while). 1st time I was about 14, 2nd time 27, & now again @ 32. I take Lexapro & usually only take .25 mg Xanax on an 'as needed' basis but have been taking one every 6hrs for almost a week since this 3rd bout started. Some days are better than others & I am trying to cope the best I know how. I saw a new therapist that I like very much for the 2nd time yesturday.
735919 tn?1236444549 thank you for the info on Lamictal, but does anyone take Geodon? I take 40mg Geodon and Lamictal. I do feel so much better, but i was wondering more about the Geodon side effects. I feel alittle more anixous im wondering if it is the Geodon.
