454366 tn?1211245301 Litium did give me a hyperactive thyroid condition. The med I was given for that has a side effect of osteoporosis in the lumbar in long term use (Synthroid). I ended up with litium toxicity a few years back because diuretics will cause that. As you know caffine is a diuretic (soft drinks) - which most kiddo's I know tend to drink. I would not allow litium to be given to my child; not going through what I have with it. I have a son who is ADHD.
Avatar m tn my wife and i are noticing aggressive behavior, and paranoia(along with nhs therapist)she is currently in hospital(acute care)and docs and therapists seem to be ignoring this and are contemplating release after suicidal/homicidal threats, has anyone experienced or heard of such aggression from geodon?i did find side effects on web that confirm this could happen, but seems doctors cant find or have ever heard of this? can anyone shed light please!!!!!
447130 tn?1225470866 I'm on Lithium 300mg twice a day but my doc cut me down to 1 a day because my ankles and legs are swollen up like an elephant. Has anyone else had this happen, does it go away after you are on it for awhile? I;ve been on it 2 weeks and aside from shaking a lot that's the only side effect. I also take Geodon 120 mg. a day. Don't think it was Geodon because it didn't happen until I started the Lithium. I try to drink a lot of water to flush my system out but it's not helping.
735919 tn?1236444549 I take 40mg Geodon and Lamictal. I do feel so much better, but i was wondering more about the Geodon side effects. I feel alittle more anixous im wondering if it is the Geodon.
Avatar n tn There are many alternatives available that do not cause these side effects and remember that everyone is different, so side effects are often different for each person. So another medication may not be as difficult for you and sometimes initial side effects fade after taking the medication for awhile. Good Luck!
Avatar m tn That actually appears to be one side effect of Geodon but given that all (current) antipsychotics have anti-cholinergic side effects that could happen with any antipsychotic and given that people react differently to each one perhaps it was the medication you were transferred to rather than the Geodon helping it as Geodon is less likely to cause anti-cholinergic effects than some other antipsychotics.
596143 tn?1226648054 I diagnosed me with Rapid Cycling Bipolar, and Anxiety with dilusions. He put me on Geodon. What side effects should I expect? Tonight I felt dizzy, blurring vision, and sleepiness.
1354001 tn?1281392593 However for others it can be activating. Both side effects can improve with time. When I was on Geodon I had to have an EKG first as they had to test for any heart irregularities before a person could start taking it as that was required at the time. Some people find some of these side effects to be intolerable. Other people do quite well on it but like any medication its essential to give it time to work and to see if the side effects improve.
Avatar m tn This is going to explain the side effects of Geodon better than I even can and I take it and experienced some of them but mostly only during the adjustment period. Side effects occur differently for each person. http://bipolar-disorder.emedtv.com/geodon/geodon-side-effects.
Avatar f tn side effects may happen drink plenty of water will minimize it too check with medical doctor hope this helps :)
Avatar f tn My doctor suggested switching to the new med Saphris but I researched it and found that it has the same type of side effects and negative long term effects as Geodon. I know that most anti-psychotics, which I only take for Bipolar II are alike. Don't want to take any but want help with my ultra-rapid mood cycling. Not against meds but am well aware of the irresponsibility and unindividualized treatment that can occur. Any suggestions?
497950 tn?1255863927 I was on Geodon after Abilify made me gain weight. The Geodon , for me, didn't work for bipolar symptoms but I am a diificult case. Abilify was the only med that worked. However, I did loose weight on Geodon and for the 2st couple weeks had an usdet stomach. If this drug works for you, and you know it's trial error for us anyway, I think you'll be please with the lack of side effects. I didn't even know I was on it after a week.
390140 tn?1219883889 Someone said that it felt like speed. It does. I was only on it for 10 days. My doc ignored the side effects I;m having and now have to take benzos around the clock....i'm considering a lawsuit against the doc and/or the manufacturer. I work as an RN but because of the seizure and tremors I have, I can't work.
Avatar n tn I began taking atypical antipsychotics just over a year ago, and stopped just over a month ago. I have been on Risperdal, Abilify, Seroquel, Zyprexa, and Geodon, in that order. Risperdal caused me to have a grand mal seizure. I was only on it for a month or so, and I was taking a fairly low dose (I don't remember precisely how much). Neither Abilify and Seroquel lasted long because of unpleasant side effects (nausea and twitching/akathesia).
2010625 tn?1329372056 I tried Seroquel and it gave me high blood pressure and made me feel like I was going to faint all the time. Risperdal did great things for me and worked pretty well but I just went off of it because it shot my prolactin level through the roof. Abilify did absolutely nothing for me. Man this Geodon sux!!! It doesn't work and it is giving me some horrible side effects. I just went to the ER for chest pain, feeling fluttery in my chest and feeling jittery, and left arm pain.
899491 tn?1243773627 I know Abilify like all antipsychotics can cause anti-cholinergic side effects (although less so then other antipsychotics) which include dry mouth and urinary retention. Sometimes some of the side effect pills used to treat the motor restlessness from it such as the anti-cholinergics (Cogentin, Artane, etc.) can make that worse. That might be one cause but generally its not so severe. Your psychiatrist should be able to explain what happened though.
642393 tn?1227032656 Abilify has a lot of information on the web about side effects and a quick google may work well, always remember that side effects are not all going to happen to you or even likely - Abilify is well liked and fairly safe compared to some of the AP and AC drugs like Geodon and Risperdal.
Avatar f tn The only thing Geodon did for me when I withdrew from it was give me violent hallucinations which landed me in the hospital. I was extremely skinny anyway because I'm on Topamax for alcohol abstinence; my dosage was increased; lost a little more which came back when I was put on Seroquel. Anyway, depending on what you were on the Geodon for, ask your doctor about going on Topamax. Weight loss is a side effect.

969163 tn?1281105479 My father has bipolar, he takes a cocktail of medications (he also has tourettes, not verbal ticks, more twitches). He has recently been put on geodon, I had some experience, bad ones, with geodon, but for him it seems to work. He is notorious for not taking his medication, either at all, on time, or without food. Once in awhile, when he'll take his nighttime geodon, he becomes very groggy and falls asleep in a chair, on the steps, eating dinner, etc.
Avatar f tn Have to be honest I was only on that for a while because it was activating and kept me up at night. I also had a problem with heart palpatations (I believe everyone has to get an EEG first as I did) so I had to discontinue it and change back to a previous medication with my psychiatrist's superivision. But some people have done well on it so it depends. It is often activating though so if you have that problem you could ask your psychiatrist if you could take it in the morning.
Avatar n tn For me the side effects of bipolar are far worse than the side effects of the medications. For me I regained a life taking meds and I appreciate that life. Knowing what I do though, if I had cyclothymia or was just mildly depressed at baseline I wouldn't take them. But I was nutbar crazy so we needed to use the good stuff.
Avatar n tn I suggest you post this question in the "Ask A Doctor" Forum - it will be answered by Dr. Gould - he's under the Mental Health area. That is a very interesting question, and unfortunately, I don't have the answer. If you have doubts on this diagnosis, it's always good to get a second opinion. Was this drug prescribed by a psychiatrist? Personally, I think that only a psychiatrist should be prescribing this class of drugs due to the nature of their side effects profile.
Avatar n tn I have done some research and have found nothing good about this drug. She has all side effects. She is on day 1 with NO geodon.
