Common Questions and Answers about Geodon mood stabilizer

geodon

719785 tn?1232901518 Geodon is an antipsychotic. Perhaps he needs a mood stabilizer as well. I have made a full recovery from schizoaffective disorder (with an experimental compound in Phase II FDA study) and even I right now need a mood stabilizer in addition to an antipsychotic. Standard mood stabilizers are Lithium, Depakoate and Lamictal. I found Lamictal to be the most tolerable. And Geodon is activating so it can occasionally cause anxiety. There are other antipsychotics as well.
Avatar m tn I don't have Bipolar 1 but Geodon helps my depression for sure along with of course my psychosis since it's an atypical antipsychotic. It's FDA approved to treat Bipolar mania and my therapist told me even though it's not FDA approved to treat depression it still has a mood stabilizing effect. It might not be working right for you as medications work differently for everyone.

142722 tn?1281533616 Geodon is an antipsychotic that is also used as a mood stabilizer. I'm not aware of its use for anxiety but you'd have to ask your psychiatrist more about that. It does seem that things need to be adjusted and/or changed but you'd have to speak to your psychiatrist to find out if the anxiety is just something untreated or a minor side effect of the Geodon and if it will go away in time. Think about when the anxiety started to get worse and speak to them about all this.
Avatar m tn Namaste, Geodon is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain. Geodon is used to treat schizophrenia and the manic symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression). So if you are subject to regular mania, it may be a good medication at least for that part of your disorder. But what about those times when you're depressed? If you're bipolar I would think that you're doctor would have you on another mood stabilizer as well(i.e.
Avatar f tn Geodon is a great mood stabilizer for many people. It has a low incidence of weight gain and very few side effects. I was on it for 4 weeks but unfortunately it didn't work for me but most people have success with it. I switched to Abilify and it works great for me!
Avatar m tn I'm starting Geodon this week. I've been told it's more sedating than the Risperdal that I was on so I've been advised to take it at night. Anyone have any experiences with Geodon?
Avatar f tn t work well on depression as it does on mania. I believe 100 mg. Lamictal which is a mood stabilizer that does work on depression as well is a subclinical dose though only a psychiatrist would know for sure. Cymbalta is of course an anti-depressent. Geodon is an antipsychotic used for bipolar. But all of them together would tend to create cognitive confusion. You should speak to your psychiatrist about having your medications adjusted.
1249261 tn?1268868936 With Geodon, everyone including myself when I took it is required to get an EKG because of the concern of heart arrythmia. The only mood stabilizer that can cause weight loss and is also specifically prescribed for this effect is Topomax but generally its only used as a supplemental mood stabilizer and it has some side effects of its own of concern.
Avatar m tn It is weight-neutral, but of course it, too, has a list of possible side effects. In my case, I really liked it as a mood stabilizer, but over time it caused pronounced hand tremors. The big one to watch out for is the risk of a severe and potentially dangerous rash. If Lamotrigine is ramped up very slowly, that risk is greatly diminished. Good luck!
Avatar n tn Well I can say for myself that I'd be concerned taking more than one anti-psychotic at a time. That's how I developed severe tardive dyskinesia to begin with which the rate of developing it as my psychopharmocologist stated "with typicals 5% per person per year and atypical antipsychotics 2.5% per person per year". Every antipsychotic you are one are atypical antipsychotics but I would see no reason you should be on more than one.
518117 tn?1429276273 http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.htm If within time he is unable to tolerate the lithim the psychiatrist could adjust the dosage and/or change him to another mood stabilizer but it would be best to give it some time. The motor rigidity caused by Haldol will stop as the blood level goes down. The minor tremors caused by lithium are seperate and that unlike the Haldol can be adjusted for.
Avatar m tn Topomax is generally used as a secondary mood stabilizer and is often of partial help and can cause mental changes. Lexapro and Wellbutrin are standard anti-depressents but anti-depressents alone wont treat bipolar and what is needed is a full mood stabilizer. Lamictal is generally helpful in this regard. However each person responds differently to each medication. The most important thing is to discuss with your psychiatrist why they are changing your diagnosis.
202665 tn?1248806733 But not knowing your current symptoms, I cannot say. I was on Geodon as a mood stabilizer for 2 1/2 years. For a long time, I was very satisfied with it. I have had a lot pf psychotic symptoms along with the bipolar disorder, and the Geodon really helped keep those at bay. I had few side effects, except once in a while, I did feel kind of like a zombie. It didn't cause any weight gain, which was nice.
7773352 tn?1394065574 Hello, I take Lithium and Seroquel . The Seroquel increase's appetite and weight gain but i have no issue's with Lithium except dry mouth and dehydration sometime's ,so i drink lot's of water . It's a mood stabilizer and work's well for me and you need regular blood test's so your Lithium levels are not too high .
Avatar f tn how about an anti--anxiety drug like Klonopin to help you sleep? i was on Geodon and within a few weeks i was convinced i had cancer. talk about bad side effects. i now know what paranoid schitzophrenics feel like. i was convinced my husband and doctors wouldn't tell me how sick i was. geodon is a very terrible mood stabilizer in my book. try something else. Lamictal? sorry about the weight - Seroquel should be outlawed i gained 40 pds just like the other poster. good luck.
Avatar f tn jHas anyone tried taking two antidepressants along with a mood stabilizer and had good results? I'm currently taking Depakote and Cymbalta, but thinking of adding Prozac for added depression benefits. I'm also on an antipsychotic, Geodon.
Avatar f tn You could speak to your psychiatrist about adjusting the dose or adding another mood stabilizer and then potentially reducing the Abilify but that judgment is up to your psychiatrist. Talk to them about your concerns.
Avatar f tn as to the no of drugs in the market it's huge, i bet there is at least a hundred, i know half of them. But unfortunately there is nothing called a best drug. What can be suitable for me may not be for you. your pdoc prescribed one AD one AD and one AP. you will find that geodon used to treat schizophrenia and acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder. it's also used as maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder when added to lithium or valproate.
Avatar f tn The other atypical antipsychotics (also used as mood stabilizers) that have less of a potential of weight gain are Abilify, Fanapt and Saphris. You could ask your psychiatrist about those options. I had similar reactions to Zeldox but each person responds differently to each medication.
Avatar f tn I'd be more concerned about how you can't be on a medication that helps you than any aspect of your relationships. Xanax can be addictive and is not by itself a mood stabilizer and that's of concern. Seroquel can cause weight gain but there are other options as regards mood stabilizers. Here's a list: http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.
Avatar f tn It is a good mood stabilizer with minimal side effects as compared to other mood stabilizers and is an effective mood stabilizer in Bipolar disorder.Hope this helps.
776302 tn?1241091853 You have to take a blood test regularly to make sure it is not affecting your kidneys and you have to eat salt. The is also depakote for a mood swing stabilizer. You have to take a blood test for that one too. I am telling you all this from my experience. I have anxiety too and PTSD. When I get manic I also talk about the traumatic things that happened to me. That's when I know I am getting manic, so I talk to doc about upping my geodon.
Avatar n tn I have a good example like lindahand brought up. Geodon (although not an antidepressant but the same concept) worked pretty decent for me but for another person it made them angry all the time and another person it didn't work at all.
Avatar m tn So I've been on Divalproex & Geodon for a week and a half now. I've noticed that yes the mood stabilizer is working well since I'm not irritable or switching moods fast. The anti-psychotic seems to calm my thoughts so they aren't racing but... Now I seem to be losing interest in the things I did on a daily basis. I play a game and it's not as fun & I feel like getting away from it. I watch tv with my neighbor and it's just not catching on.
Avatar f tn Yes I require an antipsychotic as well as mood stabilizer and even if one of them is under study that's the combination I always needed and probably always will. Its best to explain exactly to your psychiatrist exactly what is going on and what is your primary diagnosis and if its changed.
Avatar f tn I wanted to ask if wellbutrin nd celexa had bad withdrawals since I use to take them for about a yr nd a half already but about a week ago I stopped taking them! Without the permission of my doc it's jst I'm bipolar nd I already take geodon fir my mood stabilizer nd I heard taking a anti depression wit tat made u feel worse so I stopped nd Ive been feeling ALOT better I jst wanted to knw if im going to have really bad withdrawals?!
1610967 tn?1314811101 It worked out great for me. Every other antipsychotic had big issues for me. Amazing spikes in my cholesterol, lactation, never waking up. You name the side effect I got it. Geodone is not without its side effects but it helps me tremendously, especially with the racing thoughts. It does cause me agitation and I do believe has caused some weight loss (that was a good thing in my books - with portion control I went from a size 14 to a size 6 in a year and a half).
