Geodon for bipolar depression

Common Questions and Answers about Geodon for bipolar depression

geodon

Avatar m tn does geodon help you with ur bipolar?? ( explain please??
Avatar m tn I don't have Bipolar 1 but Geodon helps my depression for sure along with of course my psychosis since it's an atypical antipsychotic. It's FDA approved to treat Bipolar mania and my therapist told me even though it's not FDA approved to treat depression it still has a mood stabilizing effect. It might not be working right for you as medications work differently for everyone.
Avatar f tn I think Geodon is for BP patients who have equal mania and depression or more on the manic side (as opposed to Lamictal which is used for greater depressive BP). Trileptal is very similar to Tegretol - in fact, I think they are the same molecule but varied somewhat. I've read a statement from a Psychiatrist that Tegretol is always more successful for them than Trileptal is. Go to Bipolarworld - the Dr. in charge of that wrote a abstract of his experience using Tegretol vs Trileptal for BP.
Avatar f tn he was briefly put on meds for a few months the 1st time and this last time he was put on Geodon. Im confused, the psychiatrist that put him on the meds org said that he would probably need to take them for a year or 2...He went back to work and had to have a physical and that doctor said that people usually dont stay on geodon to long...but his after discharge psychiatrist made it sound like he was going to be on geodon forever..he has never had depression either..
Avatar f tn Ever since I was diagnosed with Bipolar I, I have struggled with depression. Mine almost always stays in the depressive cycle. I haven't had mania in awhile, but the depression just lingers on and on. I currently take Lamictal 400 mg, Risperdal 1 mg, daily. He tried me on Abilify and that was a nightmare - made me feel "crazy". Also have tried Geodon - not good on that one either. I miss being happy - even if it was induced by mania.
Avatar n tn I have been on Wellbutrin off and on for 10 years, on Cymbalta for 4-5 years and Geodon for 4 years. I have been on Geodon 40 mg at times, but recently for the last year or so, on 20 mg. Recently, my psychiatrist bumped me up to 40 mg again. It seems like the last time I was on 40 mg, I also had anxiety and obsessive thoughts. I was just wondering if anyone else had the same experience with Geodon, since that is the only thing that has changed recently.
Avatar f tn So, My daughter has bipolar, we've tried a few medications. Abilify caused massive wieght gain - so we've switched to Geodon. She's been taking the Geodon for over a yr now and we've had this problem that I can't seem to change with anyother variable.... thus I'm asking if anyone else has this issue with Geodon.
685321 tn?1230951152 I'm sorry you've gone through all of that, I've had 3 diagnoses along the way, finally coming full circle to BP. There are a few ways mania or hypomania can rear it's ugly head, and many folks aren't aware. It can show up as being cranky, short tempered, impulsive behaviours, hoarding, partying too much, getting upset very quickly.
192368 tn?1224204130 I've gone through the same kind of bipolar depression and geodon didnt help at all, it just me really hungry and sleep for 18 hours after each 40 mg dose... seroquel does work but stay at a low dosage or better yet lamictal is supposed to have antidepressant features.
Avatar f tn He also added Cymbalta for depression. When she was on the Geodon, she functioned well, worked, was pretty stable and didn’t need an antidepressant. She is having a hard time with this transition (it's been a couple months now). She doesn’t feel “normal,” said she feels like her skin is crawling, she sleeps a lot during the day and is anxious about her future…wondering if the Clozaril doesn’t work, what will she be able to take.
Avatar n tn Hello all. For a while I had the suspicion that I may be mildly bipolar. I spoke with my Pdoc a couple days ago--set down and went over all my symptoms/history with her. She said she just doesnt see any signs of bipolar and thinks im just unipolar depressive. However, she said I may be the treatment resistence type so prescribed me 25MG of lamictal to add to my 37.5mg of Effexor XR. I am supposed to take 12.5mg/day for one week then start on the full 25mg. I took the first 12.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder since '95, but through a lot of research and getting completely sober I really feel that I actually have Borderline Personality Disorder with Severe Depression and Anxiety. I just got prescribed Lamictal because I've tried everything over the years and nothing works for long. I'm still on Topomax, Geodon, Prozac and Desyrel.
Avatar f tn Which is worse bipolar one or two. And has anyone taken geodon. If so what side effects did you have.
Avatar f tn in cases of mild bipolar depression, is it normal for lows and highs to last only a few hours, rather than days or weeks? i have occasional week-long depression periods every once in awhile, but usually the hyper feeling or the depression will only last a few hours. is that normal in mild bipolar disorder? im a teenager if that makes a difference.
Avatar f tn Right now, I am taking Lamictal 400mg per day (for bipolar 1). I still feel confused, sedated, and overall just bad. I feel like I have the flu almost. This has gone on for months and I can't seem to shake it. My pdoc did increase my Lamictal from 300mg to 400mg a few weeks ago when he took me off of Geodon, but I've never had any problems when increasing on it before. I just feel horrible and don't know if Lamictal could be the remaining reason or what.
776302 tn?1241091853 Your ADD may be just when you are manic. Antidepressants can make a bipolar person manic after awhile. My daughter(42) has suffered from depression for a long time and is on lexapro. But sometimes she talks nonstop and gets irritable and angry( still single and upset about that). She blames it on PMS. But I fear she is turning bipolar. It runs in the family. I read somewhere is the patient gets enough depressed situations over the years it can turn into manic depression.
1688103 tn?1306036134 I've been bipolar for about 8 years and I can control my mania with Geodon, but I've have yet to find a mediacation for my depressed. Some meds have some effect on my depression, but it only lasts a couple of months and I'm back where I started! I've even tried ECT treaments for 3 months with only minimal relief for the depression but I also lost huge chunks of my longterm remedies. I'm at a lose as what to do next. I've been giving up on ever getting better.
Avatar f tn I have been dealing with medications for bipolar for twenty years now. Although everyone's bipolar is unique to them, I have bipolar I with psychotic features that only appear when I am medication free. I have been on a combo of lithium and geodon now for the good part of ten years, and a high dose of neurontin was added a while back to treat mania, anxiety and fibromyalgia.
Avatar f tn It is an anticonvulsant used for epilepsy, migraine prevention, and off-label used for bipolar and weight loss. I have read good reviews for people using it for bi-polar. I am surprised no one mentioned it to you already. Good luck, although I am sure you have already been put on something. I have found that the key to taking medications is research A LOT before you put it in your mouth. http://www.iguard.
Avatar f tn Cymbalta is of course an anti-depressent. Geodon is an antipsychotic used for bipolar. But all of them together would tend to create cognitive confusion. You should speak to your psychiatrist about having your medications adjusted. And here are two sites that might be of help as well: http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.htm http://www.psycom.net/depression.central.bipolar.html Discuss all this with your psychiatrist.
Avatar n tn Geodon works great for some people and horribly for others, like any psych med on the planet. It is less likely to make you gain weight compared to others in the same class, and may be less sedating, but you'll really have no idea how it will work for you until you try it. I think it's also the least likely to cause metabolic problems out of the atypical antipsychotics, but any of them can potentially do that.
Avatar f tn Well I was just curios if anyone have the depression part plus the anger part of bipolar but no ups, (not counting ups on medicion) So does anyone have mood swings between depression and anger?
Avatar f tn Any medication can sometimes take a week or two or longer to take full effect while some will take effect instantaneously. It all depends on the person of course. When I took Geodon I sometimes would "drool and stumble" figuratively for the former (felt really dumb some days) and literally for the latter (dragged my feet and sometimes felt drunk).
969163 tn?1281105479 He has recently been put on geodon, I had some experience, bad ones, with geodon, but for him it seems to work. He is notorious for not taking his medication, either at all, on time, or without food. Once in awhile, when he'll take his nighttime geodon, he becomes very groggy and falls asleep in a chair, on the steps, eating dinner, etc. when we try to coax him to go to bed he gets belligerent and nasty.
Avatar f tn For bipolar type 2 a typical dose would be 2.5 to 5 mg, for bipolar type 1 a typical dose would be 15 to 25 mg a day. The data on Abilify's effectiveness generally find it to be somewhat less effective than other atypicals, at least in the acute phase of treatment. However, some people do amazingly well on it. It doesn't cause as much weight loss as Geodon... it is pretty close to weight neutral...
Avatar m tn my daughter(step)has been diagnosed, bipolar and bpd, with depression, after changing meds afew times nowdue to bad reactions, she is taking geodon.my wife and i are noticing aggressive behavior, and paranoia(along with nhs therapist)she is currently in hospital(acute care)and docs and therapists seem to be ignoring this and are contemplating release after suicidal/homicidal threats, has anyone experienced or heard of such aggression from geodon?
Avatar m tn So I'm taking 40mg of Geodon for bipolar, though no psychotic symptoms. Now I know bipolar alone should deter me from taking mushrooms, and honestly I'm sure it will. And I know mixing recreational drugs with psychatric meds is a bad idea. Nevertheess, I have a question concerning the interaction between Geodon and psilocybin. From what I've read, psilocybin is an agonist to the 5HT2 serotonin receptor, which I assume means that it increases serotonin.
719785 tn?1232901518 Mood Disorder NOS(not otherwise specified) His dr put him on Geodon 40mg twice a day. He started this med on Tues. was discharged from hospital on Sat. He is still very depressed, anxious, having like panic attacks etc. Does anyone know if this is "normal" or what. I am trying to get his follow up with therapist moved up because it isn't until 3/31 and he doesn't see dr. until 4/6 I feel this is way too long to wait.
