Geodon and tardive dyskinesia

Common Questions and Answers about Geodon and tardive dyskinesia

geodon

Avatar n tn That is not an established criteria and still unknown but Zofran was quite helpful on it and it is being researched on tardive dyskinesia and helpful on it as well and some of what I experience is seizure like (for anyone reading this the study on me is of course tentative but is at a well known movement disorders clinic that works within standard treatment methadology). Have known conditions ruled out first though. Good luck.
Avatar n tn Those are movement disorders that are temporary but he is also at risk for permanent conditions such as tardive dyskinesia which I have and in myself is as bad as Parkinsons and can emerge after the antipsychotic masks it while it is progressing. It is irreversible. Of course people with schizoprhenia need to take antipsychotics to function. Fortunately there are new medications in development that are safer and more effective.
Avatar n tn Hes putting me on geodon to try and get me off zyprexa and to see if i get better sleep. I am on 30 mg of zyprexa right now and life has been better, cause at one time i was on 40 mg. With all the medications I am on I still don't sleep that well. We both think I'm over medicated. The doctor says that I need to calm down and relax and wait for them to work and then he will start to slowly reduce my amounts and how much medications i am on. the objective right now is to fisrt stablize me.
Avatar f tn Linguofacial Dyskinesia, Oral-facial Dyskinesia, TD, Tardive Dystonia and Tardive Oral Dyskinesia. Have you been on any of these medications? If yes, then any one of them could be the cause of tardive dyskinesia. I suggest you consult your neurogist to change the medication Refer: http://www.schmidtandclark.
Avatar m tn That would be immediately noted and is not what you are talking about. What you described from your posts sounded like it could potentially be tardive dyskinesia (a long term movement disorder for more information google "Patient Education Tardive Dyskinesia"). The best thing to do is to see a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist.
Avatar f tn Disease except that is caused by a neuraleptic or similar medication and will not worsen after it has been discontinued and at its most severe such as I have (tardive dystonia, tardive akathesia, tardive tourretticism, tardive myoclonus, and tardive psychosis which is in study) all of these diagnosed by a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist can have a wide variety of abnormal movements resembling it.
Avatar m tn my 52 year old niece took geodon for 11 months and the doctor even trippled the dosage while never seeing her- only talking to the doctor through her assistant- she has been left with severe headpronation(backward?
Avatar n tn My doctor isn't answering my calls. i've developed tardive dyskinesia and I need to get off it ASAP, but on the other hand, safely. I've been going down 20mg per week. I'm on 180mg as of tonight. Can I get off any faster than this?
Avatar m tn I have taken Geodon, Haldol, Saphris, Risperdal, Seroquel, and Fanapt in just a year and a few months. Also just knowing that Fanapt can cause Tardive Dyskinesia scares me and would have me constantly paranoid if it is going to start. I wanna know if it is a good decision to take this drug until my numbness completely subsides and then stop it. I will bring all of this to the attention of my psychiatrist, but i just wanted to know what you think. Thank you.
969163 tn?1281105479 m definitely going to look into tardive dyskinesia. Also, the Geodon side effect of agitation and irritability, sounds promising. If only he would let us talk to his doctors. He is also uber paranoid, about many things. Thank you so much for your insight, I knew I could count on this site.
Avatar m tn However, there are antipsychotics in this class called the NMDA receptor modulates in Phase II study that are primary antipsychotics that when approved in the coming years will not cause tardive dyskinesia or diabetes and promote a fuller recovery. In the meantime, tardive dyskinesia, being neurological is treatable. You should obtain a referral to a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist and I could give you more information on what treats tardive to bring to time.
Avatar f tn However, for myself (not something you have of course) in having schizoaffective disorder I needed an antipsychotic and all of them except for Clozaril (which causes blood dyscreias and needs constant bloodwork and can be dangerous and something I couldn't tolerate) can cause it. I think I would have not been able to recover if I hadn't taken an antipsychotic all these years though I wish they had caught up with the tardive in time before it progressed this far.
Avatar f tn there is something called EPS, extra pyramidal symptoms, which is a side effect of certain psychiatric medications. There is also tardive dyskinesia, which is a long term, irreversible side effect of those medications. I was on 40 mg of paxil without the shaking of the hands. i dont think its EPS, or tardive dyskinesia to be honest with you. I think its similar to what was happening to me with the haldol in that its just too much for your body to handle and it is causing hand shaking.
Avatar f tn She was on Geodon 80 mg (gained 30lbs and no improvement) and zoloft 50mg... with all the other stuff she was on. That was from August until mid December. For "psychosis" which turned out to be rapid eye movement from Lithium when she was manic. She has been off the Geodon and the Zoloft for 2 months and is back stable.
440120 tn?1211724496 The atypical antipsychotics (Risperdal through Abilify, Fanapt and Saphris) have a safer side effect profile than the typicals (Thorazine through Haldol) in that they have half the statistical potential of causing tardive dyskinesia (a long term side effect which is a movement disorder of all current antipsychotics except for Clozaril). They also have far more of a mood stabilization effect and have been specifically FDA approved for this purpose.
1322915 tn?1301611249 s good i see a psychiatrist once a month for schizophrenia and PTSD i also have tardive dyskinesia from taking geodon :)
Avatar m tn I can't stop sucking in and swallowing on my tongue and lips. It has been happening for a week now. I went to the hospital and the doctor, who was an intern said it was tardive dyskinesia, but that it would go away. On the discharge papers it wrote dystonia. I went to my doctor the following day and he said he didn't think it was tardive dyskinesia. The following day I went and saw my psychiatrist who also didn't think it was tardive dyskinesia.
Avatar f tn ve read into this on the internet and said it could be tardive dyskinesia. Has anyone else experienced this? Thank you!
Avatar n tn and up dose on trazodone and vistaril. Still not better up dose on Geodon. Still worse with bad panic attacks, tardive dyskinesia, anger and rage, hot as fire most time. Can't take no more. And hallucinations. Dr. Said Xanax would make me worse(but helped) for years. Still seeing things, my rage feelings arescaring me and my hands shake most of time and have tics real bad. What do I do now? I feel like I'm going to explode or go crazy.
Avatar m tn I am wondering if this is a plausible cause. He was also on Risperdal and Depakote and Trileptal and Terazadone and Lamictal, of course not all at the same time. I am sure I spelled all these meds wrong. We are having trouble finding any professional who will take an active interest in the urgency of our problem with both the aggression and the onset of these tic behaviors. We really need some help.
Avatar n tn Yes I would say that sounds like tardive dyskinesia. Temporary movement disorders such as akathesia vary during the day as the anti-psychotic wears off or side effect pills such as Cogentin wear off. I have severe forms of tardive dyskinesia including tardive psychosis (which is in study).
Avatar n tn If it is tardive dyskinesia the medication would be stopped (and replaced with something else) and treated. But if its some form of extra-pyramidal side effect (temporary movement disorder) then your psychiatrist could give you a side effect pill or change it. One good way to tell is whether it worsens when you take the medications and then disappates over the day as they wear off or if its random movements that occur continuously. But have a movement disorders specialist look into it.
Avatar f tn i have PTSD from combat and i take zoloft for this and i suffer from flashbacks and nightmares i also have schizophrenia and tardive dyskinesia i take geodon and congentin for this.
Avatar n tn Are you sure your friend does not have tardive dyskinesia? Seroquel and all known antipsychotics with the exception of Clozaril can cause tardive dyskinesia which is irreversible, progressive and can be masked while it is occuring. There are also variants of it such as tardive dystonia and tardive myoclonus, both of which I have and are being treated with multiple medications including Zofran.
Avatar n tn If this concern is noted it would be worthwhile to ask for a referral to a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist to further identify and treat it. There is a worthwhile article on tardive dyskinesia on Emedicine and also one you could find by doing a google search for the term "Patient Education Tardive Dyskinesia" (note as the site itself says "some of these medications may be medically neccessary).
