from Europe, I cannot believe how expensive Valtrex is here in the U.S.! I just want to get confirmation that there is a Generic Valtrex that is NOT Acyclovir - it that correct? My online pharmacy is offering me Valcyclovir which is a lot cheaper than Valtrex but I just want to make sure it isn't Acyclovir before I purchase it. Thank you in advance for your help!
Generic valacyclovir is equally effective as the Valtrex brand. If it isn't working, it suggests that the problem isn't herpes. Probably the best approach at this point is to promptly (within a couple of days) get professionally examined to confirm the diagnosis of the current problem. I'm not necessarily doubting that you have genital herpes, just questioning this particular episode.
Alternatively, is there any possibility you have newly acquired herpes?
I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
My new bottle says CPL Pms-Valacyclovir 500mg instead of CPL valtrex valacyclovir HCI 500mg. The guy at the drug place told my boyfriend that it was suppose to be the same and that it was only $14. He said that valtrex is no $50 for a fill now that there is a generic brand. He said that it should work the same and you take it the same, but he said if I notice I am getting an outbreak that I need to talk to my doc about going back on the other valtrex and see if I can get it cheaper.
I got infected with genital herpes about 5 months ago, from unprotected oral sex from a striper.... I took valacyclovir 1 g twice a day within 24 hours of the initial episode, and kept taking it until I got better, which took a while (a month almost)....
My symptoms (ulcers, itchiness and pain/discomfort) have been recurrent and very persistant since. I think I have had symptoms 3-4 out of every 5 days since day one.
It is March 2014 and I am again taking 1000mg 3x per day generic Valacyclovir for 7 days and the redness and spots on my chin are only somewhat better than they have been but they are still there and never completely went away. 1) I have the beginnings of a cold sore on the lip. For Valacyclovir and Valtrex the recommended dosage is 2000mg every 12 hours...total of 4000mg in 24 hours. I have 2000mg of Valtrex and 2000mg Valacyclovir from prior outbreaks. Can I take them together for the some effect? Or do I need to take the 4000mg total dose with the same drug?
2) I am getting cold sores on the lip up to 3 times a year. There is no common catalyst. Each outbreak if not treated early is as severe as all the rest.
Today I decided to stop taking my daily suppressant of generic valacyclovir ( I was taking two 500 mg a day 12 hours apart) and my genitalia and scrotum sensitivity/discomfort/burning came back.
When I pull on my scrotum through my boxers it starts to burn all over.
The last two weeks I was taking the generic I had a stiff neck and slight headache most of the day. Today I only had a very small faint feeling of stiffness in my neck.

I researched Mylan pharmaceutical and the reviews were very poor. I also read the reviews of people who had been switched to this generic and people were really suffering. I told my doctor I would not take it. Her mistake was not looking into it to see why I was switched. If your doctor does not put on your prescription to give you only your name brand, the pharmacy will automatically switch you to the generic. But know that you do have the choice to ask to not be given a generic.

1. I think that you meant to say that "experience tells us that when people ?quit? taking the valacyclovir, they sometimes do have an outbreak soon after that." This is my concern, that the valacyclovir takes over and that the body's immune response is less engaged in fighting the infection. Do you see what I mean?

So long story short, my father's job doesn't support our health insurance anymore. I currently have a job at a temp agency and they don't provide health insurance either. My prescription for the newest asthma inhaler from my doctor now costs me $184 for one dose. I've taken Foradil and Advair before and they both work, so I started looking up affordable brands online.
A website says that they sell about a year's supply of generic Foradil prescription.
Do report back to your doctor that the prescription is not helping, and that you may need to (a) double your dose, (b) try the brand name itself (Valtrex, rather than the generic valacyclovir) or (c) try an entirely different antiviral. Acyclovir works best for me and for many others, for example.
I hope you find relief soon. There may be over-the-counter topicals that will help with the discomfort. I've heard that folks sometimes use the oral herpes ointments with success.
Do you use protection? Because that would explain why he doesn't have type 2.

I just started dating someone who was honest in disclosing the fact that he contracted HSV-2 unknowingly from an unfaithful ex a couple of years ago. He is on anti-viral/daily suppressive therapy (Valtrex) and of course, I'll ensure that we always use condoms. I am aware that this is quite prevalent and affects around 20% of the population. With regards to my own status, I've been tested and I don't have HSV-2.
I have simplex one and I've been on the generic for Valtrex for probably a year now. My symptoms have of course completely cleared up although I was getting OB's about every 2 to 3 weeks. I also take 1000mg of lysine daily. I try to stay away from the things that I know trigger OB's for me. However I want to get off of the med's because I don't want to become dependent on them. consistent condom use; and taking anti-herpes suppressive therapy like valacyclovir. Genital to oral transmission is uncommon, but could occur. However, if it's HSV-1, the risk of transmission (for either genital or oral sex) probably is quite low.
Also, has your partner been tested to determine for sure whether she has genital herpes? She could be tested to learn whether she is susceptible to HSV-1 or HSV-2, or perhaps previously infected and therefore immune to a new infection.
