Common Questions and Answers about Gastroenteritis length of illness

gastroenteritis

Avatar n tn Hello, Diarrhea and vomitings can be provoked either by an intestinal infection or by illness somewhere else in the body. When they begin suddenly, the problem is usually gastroenteritis (or stomach flu), most often caused by a virus and sometimes by bacteria and parasites. Gastroenteritis is an irritation and infection of the digestive tract. It can often cause sudden and sometimes violent upsets and may be confused with spastic colitis.
Avatar f tn Well, unfortunately, you can be contagious a few days to up to two weeks after a stomach bug. But usually it is 3 days. However, she may have had gastroenteritis, etc. which isn't contagious. I'd say you are in the clear but good hygiene to prevent illness is always a good idea.
Avatar n tn m also currently having fairly severe pain in the muscles in my upper left arm, the left side of my neck under my chin and the left side of my lower jaw. These muscle pains prevent me from focusing on anything or sleeping. Is it possible that I have neither the flu nor a cold? I can't seem to find a match for my symptoms.
Avatar n tn What should I be looking for regarding symptoms of this disease? He is one of two cats abandened after a fire. The other is a american short hair female. The female was not diagnosed with the disease at two years of age and was vaccinated.
Avatar n tn We have started to pay a little more attention to see if her illness is food specific. As of now, it appears that she feels ill everytime she eats no matter what she has eaten. This is a child who could easily eat one of grandpa's famous hamburger, fries, potatoe salad, and fruit (she's growing like a weed) and now has trouble finishing a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. My husband has Type 1 diabetes and we are worried that this may be an early sign that her sugars are out of wack.
Avatar m tn t eat it all as I came over very hot and feeling very ill, since then I have barely been able to eat, I started with cold like symptoms, sickness and diarrhoea. Once the illness part of it past I felt absolutely fine, yet, I still can't eat much food at all, the smell of food makes me nauseous, I am getting heart burn all the time. I am drinking pleanty of water but eating no more than an egg cup full of food a day if I am lucky.
Avatar n tn I went up there and took her to the doctor and she was basically told is was a stomach virus (gastroenteritis) drink plenty of fluids and it should go away in a couple of days but when I look up Gastroenteritis it says that it's common in people with weaken immune system caused by HIV. She took her 3 month birth control shot the morning before but I'm sure that didn't cause Gastroenteritis. My question is should I be concerned about HIV at this point.
Avatar n tn My daughter is 14 months old and she has has watery diarrhea and vomitting. When she was born she was perfectly healthy, but once I had to return to work I began to give her formula and that's when she began to have these complications. She began to have watery diarrhea and vomit. I took her to the doctor and they said she had gastroenteritis, but it's been a while now and she is still the same? Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong? Thank you.
Avatar m tn This is a bit off topic for this forum, since oral herpes isn't an STD, and Dr. Hook and I don't follow the scientific literature on oral herpes as closely as for genital. I'll do the best I can, but you might consider seeing what Dr. Rockoff has to say on the MedHelp dermatology forum. As a rule of thumb, recurrent HSV outbreaks always are in more or less the same location.

Avatar n tn Hello! I seem to have unfortunately caught gastroenteritis. I was given Ondansentron and it helped immensely. However, I can't sleep. I'm so wired and my stomach still hurts but luckily, no side effects. Is this normal? Is it the gastroenteritis or the drug?
Avatar m tn m not sure about the fever, muscle aches, and chills. I did eat a caesar salad about twenty-four hours before the onset of the illness, so I guess it could conceivably be salmonella poisoning. Do you agree that gastroenteritis is more likely than ARS? Thanks for your input.
Avatar f tn Hello, I cannot confirm without examination, but it sounds like gastroenteritis. It can often cause sudden and sometimes violent upsets and may be confused with spastic colitis.Dizziness is caused by loss of water and electrolyte imbalance because of vomitings. Take adequate fluids throughout the day. The BRAT diet (ie, bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) or soft easily digestible semisolid diet can also be taken. Antimicrobial therapy is indicated for some bacterial gastroenteritis infections.
Avatar f tn s possible after this length of time frame for you to have developed some spinal disc or other structural spinal issues, has your spine been assessed? Hope that helps.......
Avatar f tn On day 7 of a severe case of gastroenteritis. Everything seems to have calmed down, but once I try and eat anything stomach cramps start, which are unbearable. Sometimes followed by diarrhoea. Is this normal after a severe case of gastroenteritis or do I need to see my G.P again?
Avatar m tn Went to the Pulmonologist and all is good. ...No signs of asbestos related illness. Both my DR and Pulmonologist said not to worry as my exposure was brief. -I still have chest pains. -Wake up in middle of night with a light sweating rapid heart rate. -After waking from a nap heart is elevated. -Sometimes a hoarse voice. -Flutter in my throat. The above seem consistan with some Mesothelioma symptoms. Could Pleural thickening be happening to make my chest hurt?
Avatar f tn If you have a stomach virus, your best course of action is to stay hydrated & let it run its course. The reason you keep going or vomiting is because your body is getting rid of the virus, if you stop it, the illness will last longer. It *****-but unfortunately that's the truth.
Avatar f tn The pain is specifically on my left side, below the ribs, between the last rib and the hip bone. Right there in the fleshy area of the lower abdomen and going downwards towards the hip. But its specifically on my side, not my back or tummy. Its been a week since symptoms started. Symptoms include a constant achy feeling in the area, sharp pains in the area when i lay down or move positions or laugh or cough. I went to the doc after 5 days. He said its just viral gastroenteritis.
Avatar f tn I am a 22-year-old medical student and know that normal cycle length varies between 28 to 35 days. My cycle however is around 40 days and sometimes more or less.. The question is, can that be normal? I'm a little overweight but not obese, I exercise regularly and I don't think I have any obvious signs of PCO. Any help?

1872406 tn?1320890391 We rescued a little kitten approx 6 weeks old who has been diagnosed with viral gastroenteritis. The prognosis by the vet is poor and I'm wondering if there is anything else we can do other than keep her hydrated and treat/prevent secondary infections. Avatar m tn Previously my symptoms could only be felt in the morning and for the rest of the day I was fine. Now the tip of my penis itches and is more sensitive as well. My question is , could it be that the injection and the cipro didnt kill whatever bacteria in the first place? Or could this be a yeast infection due to a extended intake of Cipro? I look forward to your reply!

I was recently Hospitalized with Gastroenteritis/Colitis and was wondering if anyone could give me some options for a good food regiment (liquid diet) that would help calm the intestines. I have had a recent infection including Colitis, Gastroenteritis (sp). I would also like to know what the best OTC antacid might be to calm the tummy. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
