Common Questions and Answers about Gastroenteritis constipation

gastroenteritis

Avatar n tn Hello! I seem to have unfortunately caught gastroenteritis. I was given Ondansentron and it helped immensely. However, I can't sleep. I'm so wired and my stomach still hurts but luckily, no side effects. Is this normal? Is it the gastroenteritis or the drug?
1872406 tn?1320890391 We rescued a little kitten approx 6 weeks old who has been diagnosed with viral gastroenteritis. The prognosis by the vet is poor and I'm wondering if there is anything else we can do other than keep her hydrated and treat/prevent secondary infections. Please help- really appreciate any advice or past experience that you may have... Thanks in advance...
Avatar n tn The prime one which needs to be ruled out is gastroenteritis. Gastroenteritis is an irritation and infection of the digestive tract. It can often cause sudden and sometimes violent upsets and may be confused with spastic colitis. Other possibilities are diabetes, cyclic vomiting syndrome, liver pathologies,ETEC infection and mesenteric adenitis. In my opinion, consulting a physician will be the best because without examination,I cannot confirm a diagnosis. Hope it helps.
Avatar f tn The spasms could be due to gas as this in diabetes there is a slowing down of gut movement, constipation, gas and bloating. It can also be due to food poisoning or gastroenteritis. PCOD is also a cause of cramps and so is pelvic inflammatory disease. IBS, Crohn’s and celiac disease too should be ruled out. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral. Hope this helps. Take care!
Avatar f tn Hi, I have Coeliacs Disease and also IBS - mainly Constipation related and general abdominal pain. I have recently had a very bad spell of constipation which has just about cleared now. It lasted for about 2 weeks and took 2 packs of Picolax to sort it. Then I got Gastroenteritis following this just to top it all off. Now, my bowel movements seem OK but my abdominal pains have changed now. It feels a bit like when you get a "stitch", that kind of pain but all over my tummy.
Avatar f tn There are many possible causes, unfortunately. It could be thyroid, adrenal, pituitary problem. It could even be constipation. It could be aches and pains you aren't recognizing. If possible, find a reputable doctor, perhaps an osteopath (DO) rather than an MD. A DO tends to look at the whole picture instead of just treating the symptom, so instead of giving you a sleeping pill, they will track down the thing that is throwing your system off and keeping you from sleeping.
Avatar m tn Sometimes the pain could be due to gastroenteritis, which is infection of the intestines. Amoebiasis is another infection, which can cause similar symptoms. Other common causes are constipation and indigestion. Some inflammatory bowel diseases like diverticulitis and crohn’s disease can produce similar symptoms. Here the walls of the intestines are swollen.
4244028 tn?1352493610 When I brought her in for her 5 year physical I asked her Dr about it. He said it is constipation. I told him she.has normal bowel movements everyday, except during times she gets stomach bugs then its diarhea, and that she is bloated constantly. Dr said the loose stool is getting past hard impacted stool. I was quite suprised to hear it and I havent been able to find info on this on the net. Does anyone have info on this? Could it be something else?

Avatar n tn My daughter is 14 months old and she has has watery diarrhea and vomitting. When she was born she was perfectly healthy, but once I had to return to work I began to give her formula and that's when she began to have these complications. She began to have watery diarrhea and vomit. I took her to the doctor and they said she had gastroenteritis, but it's been a while now and she is still the same? Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong? Thank you.
Avatar n tn I went up there and took her to the doctor and she was basically told is was a stomach virus (gastroenteritis) drink plenty of fluids and it should go away in a couple of days but when I look up Gastroenteritis it says that it's common in people with weaken immune system caused by HIV. She took her 3 month birth control shot the morning before but I'm sure that didn't cause Gastroenteritis. My question is should I be concerned about HIV at this point.
Avatar m tn Does she have any diarrhea/constipation? If so, does it smell "extra bad"? Does she have any fever? Any recent travel? Is there any blood in her stools? Has she began to menstruate (yes, I know she is young - just asking).
Avatar f tn d wonder also about a possible STD (sexually transmitted disease), are you sexually active and if so, there is a chance it could be that. As I said in the first response, constipation as well as a gastroenteritis could be an issue. If you've had no loose or diarrheal stools, you could try a stool softener and see if the pain is relieved with that. Otherwise, a CT scan or a gynecological exam may be needed. If that doesn't show anything, I'd be about as clueless as you are now!
1806721 tn?1554333407 I've had IBS-D for over 10 years. The constipation had been so severe that only Linzess could offer relief and it was extremely painful when I was finally able to go after 2-3 weeks absence of BM. The whole clearing process usually lasts several hours to half day with at least a dozen runs. All of this suddenly changed 3 weeks ago when I, without taking any laxatives, started explosive watery diarrhea. At first I thought it was an acute infection or food poisoning.
Avatar f tn It actually started with a four day person of constipation. Then, I had diarrhea for a week, as well as two days of the "stomach bug," or gastroenteritis. During the infection, I also had some mucus in my stool. But after a week, all of these symptoms, including the mucus, cleared up and went away. Because of my anxiety and stress, I researched a read a ton about GI issues and bowel movements. I had always had occasional floating stools, at least since my teenage years.
Avatar f tn Couple hours, an IV and some meds later, I was sent home with the end result being gastroenteritis. No longer vomiting for the next few days but still diarrhea, the "sick" feeling in my head was still present. I proceeded to wait a bit longer for all to subside. About 4 days ago now, still no vomiting, no more diarrhea but rather one full day of constipation — proper diet for when having flu-like symptoms, slowly eating more, proper hydration, etc.
Avatar f tn Yes, you had something but unlikely food poisoning. Could have simple gastroenteritis. Blood in stool looks like coffee grounds. Dark stool means you may have been constipated and it came from 'higher up' in your gi tract and this could account for nausea and discomfort as well. And perhaps the stool was older due to constipation and causes a bit of micro tearing on the way out. All of that is reasonable to think. You would have heard if you gave food poisoning to anyone by now.
Avatar f tn My daughter suffers from chronic nausea and constipation. She has an an endoscopy which showed nothing wrong. What other types of tests should she be given to find the cause?
Avatar f tn ve been having bouts of diarrhea and then constipation also. Today my back pain is excrutiating and the past two days my stools have been dark brown/black. My last bm was lighter. I have had my gallbladder removed. I'm not quite sure if I should be worried and my Dr. seems to think it may just be muscle related. I don't recall doing anything to my back. Has anyway had similiar symptoms and did they ever figure if it was something to be concerned about?
Avatar f tn Hi, I'm unable to post to the general Gastroenterology forum. My basic question is this: Have you ever seen cases of IBS present with one-sided flank pain rather than abdominal pain? Stats/History: Healthy, active 34-year-old female, 5'6" 135 pounds. 2 prior C-sections, Hashimoto's disease (well controlled for 2+ years with Levoxyl), mild asthma Background: I traveled to Mexico (Cabo) in mid-October. I had traveler's diarrhea for a few days.
Avatar n tn heating pad on your tummy, drink lots of plain HOT water, high fiber foods and NO TYLENOL. Pain meds will cause you constipation. Sounds like you are experiencing irritable bowels, if you have had alternating constipation and diarrhea, with bloating. I have had the same issues and acu pressure has helped too. Beginning on the right lower side of your abdomen, beginning massaging in small upward circles.
Avatar f tn On day 7 of a severe case of gastroenteritis. Everything seems to have calmed down, but once I try and eat anything stomach cramps start, which are unbearable. Sometimes followed by diarrhoea. Is this normal after a severe case of gastroenteritis or do I need to see my G.P again?
Avatar f tn I went to the doc after 5 days. He said its just viral gastroenteritis. I looked up the condition and it says you have vomiting and/or diarrhea, but i have neither. I am worried it is appendicitis, but the appendix is on the right side, not left. I am really in pain but i am taking my meds as described. Does this sound like viral gastroenteritis to you? I am in such severe pain just laying here typing this and barely moving.. Please help. Thank you.
Avatar n tn Hello, Diarrhea and vomitings can be provoked either by an intestinal infection or by illness somewhere else in the body. When they begin suddenly, the problem is usually gastroenteritis (or stomach flu), most often caused by a virus and sometimes by bacteria and parasites. Gastroenteritis is an irritation and infection of the digestive tract. It can often cause sudden and sometimes violent upsets and may be confused with spastic colitis.
