Gabapentin use in dogs

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin use in dogs

neurontin

Avatar m tn What you describe is not a side effect of gabapentin. They contraindicate its use in dogs that have kidney deficits, but the only side effects are vomiting, depression, excessive sleepiness and loss of balance. None of the other medications should cause otic issues either, especially since he's not new to taking them. It sounds like your dog has possibly developed otitis externa on top of whatever he's taking the gabapentin and other medications for.
Avatar f tn Dear, Neurontin (Gabapentin) in dosages up to 2400 mg/day have been well tolerated in long-term clinical studies for upto 6-8 weeks. There have been no major side effects with its long term use.
Avatar f tn I tried Neurontin, in lieu of Lyrica. I found I couldn't take it as it made me feel worse (as if hit by the flu and very lethargic.) It does work with great results for some though and it's cheaper than Lyrica. I wish it had worked for me, but have heard good stories from others. Hope you are doing well too.
Avatar f tn Has anyone expierence swelling of the face with gabapentin? I know it can be a side effect. My question is; Is this an allergic reaction or is the dosage too much? Actually my face feels stiff at times and cheeks get sore. If it is the gabapentin, what would be the alternative? Thank you med help family........
Avatar n tn I am a 50 yr old male. I was prescribed Gabapentin for neurological pain management by the VAMC in Tampa, Florida. According to some post I've read, Gabapentin is a med that one must be weened off of. I've been taking Gabapentin off and on to help with pain so I can sleep. I don't take it all the time because of the side effects. Sometimes, but not all the time, I feel like I'm having a bad hangover after the medication wears off.
Avatar f tn Call the doctor who gave you the gabapentin. Check to see if the symptoms you are having are listed as side effects of the gaba.
6937315 tn?1386287618 Seriously worst withdrawal on the planet. I'm almost on my second week since last dose and still in full physical withdrawal. Use at your own risk. Don't let the "non-narcotic" label fool you it's very mentally and physically addicting. I feel like I need to warn people. This is just ridiculous that I was never warned about this.
1831920 tn?1320857757 I suggest you look up some articles on crate training and have your husband read them. We are not talking in humane crating here. He probably has visions if puppy mill dogs. Many of us here are experienced and "humane" dog people. Dogs are basically den animals. All my dogs have usually gone in their crates on their own to nap, my little one is in her crate now. I leave the door open. If your dog is ill or injured, the crate comes in handy.
Avatar f tn Hi. I have a severe anxiety disorder...I take 1 mg of Klonopin/clonazepam 3x's a day for it, as prescribed by my Dr. I have lost the rest of my bottle of pills and can not get a refill until the 6th. (It's 3am on the 30th.) I have 5 mg tablets of Valium that are still in date but have never used. (Prescribed for a different issue quite a while back by a different Dr.) I am wary of trying new medications because I am always sensitive to side affects.
1045086 tn?1332126422 I receive e-mails regarding news in the medical journals. I saw a piece written on the use of gabapentin and it's possible side effects. Please note that this is a PRELIMINARY STUDY. As Mary suggested DO NOT STOP TAKING ANY OF YOUR MEDICATIONS BASED ON THIS. Talk to your DOCTOR BEFORE stopping any of your medications. Even if you decide to stop one of these meds, you MUST taper off or you may be faced with a new set of problems. This is the email I received.
Avatar f tn I have taken Gabapentin before for pain and found it about as useless as a screen door in a submarine. Yeah I know the "top doctors" prescribe it. They also used to prescribe blood-letting. In addition it seems to lower a persons IQ by about forty points (I know...that's a figure of speech), cause loss of memory, headaches, and loss of libido. I think there are many alternatives to be considered before using Gabapentin, such as a frontal lobotomy.
612551 tn?1450022175 like myself who is also a (human) medical technician (nurse) said that he has had success with Benadryl Topical liquid on his dogs. I know the fact that it is safe/recommended for human use is not proof it is safe or effective on dogs. Still I'd like to give it a try. On the ears there is no way he can lick/ingest the stuff, on the feet he may get some ingested and perhaps that is a different issue.
Avatar m tn t be coming from the phenobarbital. The usual side effects in canines from phenobarbital use are lethargy, polydipsia (increased thirst), polyuria (increased urination), polyphagia (increased appetite), anxiety and weight gain. From the symptoms I think your vet is probably right on the money with the diagnosis of a mass in the brain, but I doubt that the tremors signify pain because you said they are of short duration.
Avatar m tn t know what that could be). Lyme bacteria use up Mg in the body, and muscle aches and cramps can be due to Mg deficiency. I've read that Mg is often low in the American diet anyway. Any variety that ends in "-ate" [magnesium malate, orotate, citrate, etc.] are said to be most absorbable in the body. (One variety that I've read is *not* as effective is a combo pill of magnesium and calcium such as CalMag; dunno why.) I still take Mg every day, with good effect.
1627010 tn?1299446388 and since your baby is use to getting meds in her eyes i am sure she will be fine with it.You can also have it compounded into drops if drops are better then the ointment.I use the compounded drops it seems to last longer than the other.I put 2 drops in twice a day.I hope your baby is feels better soon.
Avatar f tn Since I started taking gabpentin for nerve issues I havd noticed a decline in my cravings for crack cocaine. In addition when I do use I do get high - so it appears if this continues I will hopefully be able to put that pipe down forever - at least I hope.
Avatar f tn It could also be a fungal infection, which is more common in dogs with floppy ears. The ear fold keeps in more moisture than in pointed-eared dogs. It would be a good idea to have your vet take a look so you're not blindly throwing things at the problem that may not work, or may make the situation worse. It's also a good idea to occasionally check for, and remove, any ear wax that is visible. We swab ears with a Q-tip about once a month.
