Gabapentin in neuropathic pain

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin in neuropathic pain

neurontin

Avatar f tn Im going to start to slowly reduce the Gabapentin in hope that the itch subsides and hope the neuropathic pain does not return. Just wanted to put this out there in hope that someone can help me.
293157 tn?1285873439 I was hoping this would also help treat the neuropathic pain in my left hand that develped a few months later, due to a relapse. However the gabapentin has not seemed to help my hand, as this pain continues despite titrating to such a high dose. I recently started on amitriptyline for my neuropathic pain, am up to 50mg per day, and I think it is helping. The stabbing and burning sensations are lessened, although the numbness and incoordination remain.
Avatar n tn They are both used to treat nerve pain (neuropathic pain), but gabapentin can be useful in treating other pain syndromes, like the pain of peripheral neuropathy, or the pain of fibromyalgia. The only way to know if this medication will help is to try it, but I repeat, it is not used to substitute for opiate treatment, so you will most likely continue your morphine and oxycodone while trying it. Pain management, like football, is a game of inches.

Avatar f tn Hi could anyone help me please?
Avatar f tn The latter is an anticonvulsant/anti-epileptic also used in pain management, particularly for neuropathic pain. Its mechanism of action involves suppressing the formation of new synapses between nerves (not by activating the GABA receptor, as was previously thought). It generally creates a sensation of numbness or dullness where there was pain earlier. Both should help, but be careful about the side effects, which can include drowsiness, slowed reactions, and such.
1983221 tn?1333506185 I take both gabapentin and amitriptilyne (Elavil) for my neuropathic foot pain. I started with 300mg gabapentin and worked my way up to 3600mg. I take 1200mg 3X/day. By itself it didn't do that much for my pain. We added 25mg amitriptilyne to the gabapentin and I saw some relief. We upped it to 50mg 1X/day and my pain was gone completely! I guess I'm luck not to have any side effects from either drug.
Avatar f tn ve had optic neuritis in the past, it mostly impacted my vision (gray area in the center of the vision in one eye and a difference in the brightness of the color red in that eye). The only thing I could do then was not travel (as I do for work). That is not an option right now, so I am definitely looking for some other options. Any ideas?
7970489 tn?1395885877 Gabapentin is not a med for spacticity, but in MS for neuropathic pain. There are several spacticity meds available that do work for many people. I hope you feel better soon.
Avatar m tn One common cause is diabetes. The treatment for neuropathic pain (pain coming from nerves) includes gabapentin and pregabalin, and medications such as elavil (which is an antidepressant but has actually been found to be helpful with neuropathic pain as well). There are other medications, but these are typically the first line. It is important to keep in mind that the treatment of neuropathic pain takes time to get the doses of medications to an optimal dose.
280418 tn?1306325910 Hope, Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum has written several books about fatigue and about pain, and his website at endfatigue has most of the information. He has several very helpful suggestions for neuropathy in "Effective Treatment for Neuropathic (Nerve) Pain." If you do an internet search for the title of the article and his name, you'll find it easily.
Avatar m tn I have neuropathic pain in hands and around chest area down to waist it squeeze's me like a tight wrap and I feel like I am freezing cold all the time.
Avatar f tn I take gabapentin for neuropathic foot pain. I'm with doublevision, as I take 1200 3X/day. The dose does need to be built up relatively slowly. I started at 100mg 3X/day. All by itself the gabapentin did not resolve my foot pain. I have added amitriptilyne (Elavil) 50mg 1X/day. The combination has completely resolved the pain in my feet. I would urge you to find an MS specialist. They are more likely to understand neuropathic pain issues.
Avatar f tn I am asking if there is another neuropathic pain medication to use as an alternative to Gabapentin. I agree that the Gaba helps with nerve pain, however the side effects are scaring me. I plan on discussing this with my PM but want to know more before going in.
Avatar f tn I have taken lycra before and in my opinion gabapentin works well on nerve pain it seems to take the edge off the pain, not 100% though maybe 75%. Lycra was better for migranes, it seemed to keep them at bay however I would say it worked about 55/60% on general nerve pain. it did not stop at all the 'electric' shooting nerve pain whereas gabapentin takes the edge off but I still feel it at a reduced rate, and gabapentin does nothing for migrane.
620877 tn?1282764097 Most of the pain relieving drugs over the counter are for mild to moderate pain. In fact they barely touch moderate pain. If you are having great pain issues that over the counter medications are not helping with, you need to speak with your doctor. There is help available, but you need to work with your doctor, especially because of your stomach problems. As Lulu said, since the NSAID'S are anti-inflammatory pain relievers, I do not think they will help with neuropathic pain.
1896537 tn?1381900009 Stabbing, shooting pain is neuropathic and classic in MS. Generally caused by spinal lesions when experienced in the extremeties. Stabbing pain in the head may be trigeminal neuralgia, also caused by MS. The achy, flu like pain you describe doesn't sound like typical neuropathic pain. I haven't experienced the latter with my MS but it sounds like others have.
Avatar f tn Before you can treat this it's wise to see a physical therapist for a professional opinion. It's possible, though less likely, that you are having spasms, in which case a muscle relaxant can help. There are several on the market, all prescription. Members here have lots of experience with the various drugs. It's also possible that problems walking are at the root of this. When this happens we tend to compensate, and can unconsciously really mess up our gaits and body positioning.
Avatar f tn From what I understand, there's a few differences. First, pregabalin cost a lot more than gabapentin. That's cause gabapentin is generic. Lyrica (pregablin) is effective for fibromyalgia when gabapentin is not. gabapentin often requires 1800mg / day to work (built up slowly over time), while pregabalin can be effective at 150mg TID. And the change of side effects build as the does is increased.
Avatar n tn Plus Doulepin 25mg in the morning and 75mg at night and 1 tamazapan 10mg at night plus co-proximal as required, plus 40mg statin at night. Three days after starting the Gabapentin and Dosulepin the severe pain in my thighs was reduced by about 90%. Unfortunately after taking these drugs for three months I have developed painful athritic pains and stiffness in both my shoulders and right hand.
