Gabapentin for herniated disc

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin for herniated disc

neurontin

Hi there. Herniated discs can cause moderate to severe pain due to nerve roots impingement by the disc matter exiting at that level. The therapeutic options for this are NSAIDs, epidural injections of steroids, physiotherapy and surgical decompression like discectomy and bone grafting. you need to consult a neurosurgeon for evaluation. You have been prescribed drugs like flexeril, muscle relaxant, gabapentin, anti convulsant used for neuropathic pain, opioids, etc.
Hi I have had Arnold Chiari with syringomyelia for 26 yrs now and have lived a pretty decent life with this Malformation. Now I have a herniated disc and my orthopedic Dr. wants to me to go through an operation because the pain is really bad…(Gabapentin seems to work well) but my question is who should I consult this with …My Neurologist is retired and I need to find another Neurologist who specializes in ACH or should this be done solely by my Orthopedics? Were do I start???
I am 33 Year old male that for the past 2 or 3 weeks has been having hip and leg pain it just got worse and worse so i went to the doctor and he said i had a Large herniated disc that was pressing on my nerve to my leg.He said there was no other opion but to have surgury to releve the pressure on the nevre. is this true there is no other opion? My left leg now seems like it has a mind of it's own and it is very hard for me to walk.Is there anything i can do or have i let this go on to long?
In January of 2012, after experiencing some lower back pain and having an MRI done, I discovered that I had a herniated disc at L3-4. I started taking a combination of naproxen, gabapentin, and tramadol. The main focal points of the pain was the lower back, and left back hip (right behind the pocket). The pain would often radiate down my leg and across my groin. I dealt with it, waiting to see if if it would subside on it's own.
everything is the same thank God! except for a herniated disc in my lumbar …and one Neurologist told me I had herniated discs also in my neck …. I have an appointment today with another Neurologist that is relatively new in town and in from Cuba…he has performed al lot of surgeries for herniated discs and from what I have been told by his patients he is something else. I do not plan on having an op right now…I’ve learned my lesson and will go thru lots of opinions and DRs.
I was prescribed neurontin for sciatic pain due to a herniated disc at the L5-S1 level. My nerve damage was pretty bad at the time and also caused foot drop. The neurologist said I would probably always have foot drop. After I had surgery the foot drop slowly went away as did the sciatic pain. I was told the nerve heals at only a cm. a month. So if you were like me and had nerve pain from butt to foot it will take quite awhile for that pain to subside.
Be aware that disc herniation could also mask the joint problem, I mean the problem could be not the disc but the joint !! Always look in the past for a small (or big) cause like a trauma, car accident !, because when really no cause is found we should do many investigations in the direction of Rheumatology. Gabapentin and Pergabalin always help, but do we really need them ? is this a neural pain ? Cortisol (steroids) are effective in joint pathology ?
I was just given a script for Neurontin (Gabapentin) from my neurologist. Need to know side effects. Also, how tolerated is this for a persons stomach or digestive track?
I also have 5 herniated discs in my lower back and 3 in my neck. 2 years ago, i had spinal fusion surgery for a disc that was remoived in my upper neck that was sitting on my spinal cord. Obviously, i have degenerative disc. I also have cervical facet syndrome. i also suffer from IBS and hypothyroidism along with WPW, which was corrected with surgery and I also have tachychardia.
Doing my own research I haven't heard of this being prescribed for neck problems such as a herniated disc in the neck. thanks so much.
Five years ago I had a herniated disc l5 - terrible pain walking down my leg. I went through the drx machine with a chiropracter which eliminated my leg pain and eventually walked fine. The huge problem, is my foot has never been the same. I get a terrible stiffness, tightness, squeezing sensation when using the gas and brake pedal. At one time I tried laser treatment that really worked very well - temporarily. Been to other chiropracters, gabapentin, physical therapy - you name it.
Hey, Wobbles. Been taking gabapentin for several months now, for that nasty pain behind the eyes, the pain that made me feel as if the backs of my eyeballs were badly bruised. Though it was a real bear to get used to it, gabapentin has been the only thing prescribed for me that has had any lasting positive effect. The Health Page on treating neuropathic pain lays out the cautions well. Start slow, and move slower. It will be worth it in the end -- probably.
My 9 yo beagle was suffering from a herniated disc. This happened again one summer ago and he recovered from rest and steroids. It happened again 4 months ago and after our best efforts to get him better with rest again failed, we had him go through surgery to clean up the bad tissue around the vertabrae in question. Visual signs of his recovery were supposed to happen pretty quickly. Unfortunately, before the first week was through, he actually seemed to be taking steps *backwards*.
it seems to affect people differently. As far as baclofen, I've been prescribed that for the herniated disc in my neck and I've taken them at night...honestly I don't feel pain relief, I just seem to get sleepy.
i have a protruding disc, hernitaed disc, and an annular tear in one of my disc in my thoracic spine. Im also about to start school and i am also worried about carring books around and the pain it will cause. im also about your age im 21. i saw my pcp and that didnt help much saw an ortho dr. and they put me on pain patches. Ive had epidural injections, nerve blocks, and a radiofrequency never ablation. Now we are looking at a possible spinal fusion.
After about 9 months of what started as tingling down my left shoulder to mid arm, and then progressing to severe pain from the left side of my neck along the top back of my shoulder, I was diagnosed in December as having a herniated C3-4 disc. I did have an MRI done, then saw a neurosurgeon who recommended spinal traction and referred me to a Physical Medicine doctor. The neurosurgeon told me that he would not want to consider surgery on such a high part of the neck.
I have multiply bulging disc. I also was told that I have herniated disc at C6-C7. I have chest and shoulder and upper back pain. I was wondering can this cause headaches, ringing in the head, light headness, dizziness. The doctors keep running all kinds of test. But they are still no answers.
Everytime I look up Thoracic Degenerative Disc Disease is says herniated disc. Is this true? I'm so confused. My Dr. says, there is nothing significant to my MRI. I'm so frustrated and in so much pain. Please help!
I do not get many flare ups, but when I do, it affects the same area of the body. Now the question is, I have a herniated disc in the c5-5, it gives me a lot of back pain, but I am at the point that when I sit my legs go numb. I do not know if it is from the Lupus or disc problem now. I have had the epidural block done twice and it worked for me. I am now on Naproxen for the swelling and empracet for the pain.
I've had cervical disc generation disease c3-c7 for nearly 5 years. I get facet injections about 3 times per year and take Soma and Vicotin as needed. My primary care doctor is always pushing me towards surgery, but I prefer the injections from my pain management doctor. There is no procedure to replace any liquids in the discs, but there are some replacement discs some folks have tried with from what I understand very limited success.
It seems anti-depressants are very popular for herniated disc problems. I am trying gabapentin which seemed to help almost immediately, but not anymore. I really don't want to increase the dose because they all have their side effects. I am on the prairies in Canada, our nearest spine clinic is 5 1/2 hours away. I am seeing my family Dr. tomorrow to make arrangements to go there or at least get a second opinion on the surgery.
I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH A HERIATED DISC IN MY NECK C6-C7 FOR ALMOST AYEAR, NEUROLOGIST SAYS THEY CAN ONLY TREAT ME FOR THE SYMPOMS OF HERNIATED DISC,( CERVICAL NECK SPASMS) TREATMENT HAS BEEN AS FOLLOWS, PERSCRIBED NORTRIPTYLINE FOR A FEW MONTHS ALONG WITH FLEXEREL, WHICH DID HELP BUT I ASKED TO BE TAKEN OFF NORTRYPTILINE DUE TO WEIGHT GAIN, I WAS THEN PUT ON TOPAMAX, I HAVE BEEN ON THAT FOR A FEW MONTHS BUT THE SIDE AFFECTS ARE BEGIINING TO REALLY GET TO ME, SO NOW MY NEUROLOGIST IS SWITCHIN
I have a herniated disc L5-SI - it is protruding on the left side and i have nerve damage in my left leg mostly in the sciatia nerve. I also have numbness of the right leg, not the nerve numbness but the entire leg goes numb like it is falling asleep. also my herniated disc has calcium deposits around the disc and there may also be scarring there - i am in extreme pain constantly and take lortab for the pain. i have had shots in my back and physical therapy - all of which did no good.
I'm now 43 years old. I've been waiting 3 years for disc replacement surgery to be a little more mainstream treatment. I'm interested in hearing anything about this procedure for the C-spine. I'm considered a surgery candidtate for c-5/6 and c-6/7 levels.
I am currently taking 1800mg gabapentin, 2x10mg zomorph, 8x 500mg paracetamol and oramorph for breakthrough pain. However this is having little effect!! Any ideas what could be wrong with me? I am feeling desperate and very worried.

I happen to have back pain with sciatic nerve on my right leg for more than 6 weeks now, When am in gabapentin, i sleep better but not for too long. My neurologist had recommended for cotisone shots earlier, but i thought of waiting. Now i feel like i should go for cortisone shots. My question here is I have a possibility of becoming pregnant in couple of weeks. (i may be already pregnant by few days), Does injecting a cortisone shot affect my pregnancy or otherwise the fetus?
Hi, I just had surgery Thursday for my L1 S5 degenerative herniated disc sitting right on my nerve on the right side. It had been going on for about 2 1/2 months. I met with an orthopedic surgeon and he suggested surgery, of course that is scary, but nothing else was working. Pain meds, physical therapy 3X a week. i had a procedure called a Lumbar Microdiscectomy. They went in and took out the damaged part of the disc and the nerve fell back into place.
This went on for years until April of 2008 when an on call doctor said I was to young to be having this kind of pain and ordered an MRI. It showed that I had a herniated disc at L5 S1. I went and had two steroid injections that did nothing but put me down for two days afterward. Then I did physical therapy for four months. I had a discectomy in September 2008. They took a quarter of the disc out. I had immediate relief of the leg pain, it was amazing.
