Gabapentin and liver

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin and liver

Avatar_m_tn ) That's why he's a Primary Care Doctor,LOL I haven't started treatment yet,I tried going to U of M for a period over 5 years and had to jump through hoops as Interferon/Ribovarin was considered experimental by the insurance companies at the time and at the end never received treatment, longer story that ended with me and the wife storming out of the liver clinic.
Avatar_f_tn my neuro stated me on this, and every time i stop taking it due to the "dopy" feeling. so now, i'm trying it again, 100-300mg at night, to see if it helps with pain. i think it is helping my sleep a little deeper, though not longer. however, here i sit, feeling so "out of it", that i really don't feel like doing anything, although i want to go do something because it is such a lovely day out. i'll probably stop this med AGAIN, due to this side effect.
Avatar_f_tn I am a bit worried about taking Gabapentin.....if it starts to work, and I think it might be.....(which is awesome for the day to day life), but when you're not in pain, you can forget that something is wrong! Im worried that I won't push for an answer as hard and/or something will get missed! I don't want to take this band-aid treatment for the rests of my life.....I want to get better!
Avatar_m_tn i used to be prescribed this medication (gabapentin) for GHB withdrawals and as a mood stabilizer and I did abuse it. most of the time at dosages of 8 to 12 800mg tablets at a time and I just wanted to caution anyone who might take alot of it that it did make me have seizures from time to time at dosages as low as 8 400mg capsules. just a cautionary note.
4705307_tn?1447973922 In clinical trials in diabetic neuropathy and epilepsy, therapy with gabapentin was not associated with an increased frequency of serum aminotransferase elevations or liver toxicity. Rare individual case reports of liver injury from gabapentin have been published, although the causal relationship of gabapentin with the liver injury was not always clear. The latency to onset in these reports was 1 to 8 weeks and associated with cholestatic pattern of enzyme elevations.
Avatar_f_tn I do have a bottle of 100 mg gabapentin (270 count) and have heard it willl ease withdrawal symptoms. How much should I start with, how many doses a day and how many days can I safely take it until I have to withdrawal from it too? I also have a bottle of methocarbamol and have heard it could ease the withdrawals. Has anyone ever tried it? I have been prescribed all these drugs including the vicodin for a botched broken leg/ankle surgery resulting in nerve pain.
Avatar_f_tn Now, it’s time to allow your system to find its base line and start functioning naturally. You have done great and should be very happy with the results. Congratulations!
1218873_tn?1300094816 This means to begin with lowering the gabapentin dose by 300mg every 3 days (I'm on 1800mg at the moment) and then when I'm down to 600mg of gabapentin a day I start to add the pregabalin 75mg to begin with then upping it every 3 days till I reach 300mg a day at the same time still reducing the gabapentin to zero. Hope that makes sense.
Avatar_f_tn My doctor prescribed Gabapentin for my nerve damage but i read a post on here by a "Brian" a member and he said he was taking up to 25 hydrocodones a day and Gabapentin helped with the withdrawals TREMENDOUSLY?? Has ANYONE else ever been prescribed GABA for withdrawals?? I am out of my meds (10/325 Percocets) and do not get my refill till the end of this month...I will continue taking these as my doctor prescribed and PRAY TO God That it will get me thru my withdrawals...
Avatar_f_tn I just had an issue with Gabapentin...I have IBS and was on Miralax to help and it was working...until I took the Gabapentin.....I had one heck of a time getting regulated again..... Time frame.......almost 2 months to get back on track after stopping the meds. And may I add...I was on the Miralax the whole month that I took the gabapentin. May I ask Y u were rx'd it?...maybe another rx will work better.

Avatar_m_tn i don't know whether you take antidepressants. i do and i am on effexor and i have fatty liver caused by effexor xr. I don't drink alcohol and iam only 26.
Avatar_f_tn When I had turn 10 years old I started to abuse hydrocodone and gabapentin, as well as other types of pain meds. I took a break from it when I turned 21 due to my pregnancy, and id say three years later I started again, not as bad as before but I drink regularly. Just recently I have pain on my upper right side below my ribs. I know this pain is coming from my liver, I am extremely concerned. What are your comments on this, anything helps.
Avatar_m_tn Stage 4, Cirrhosis of the liver is when the normal liver cells are replaced by scar tissue. The anatomy of the structure of the liver is changed and the livers surface becomes nodular replacing the smooth, shiny, nutmeg colored liver that you see in a super market of butcher shop. End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD) is decompensated cirrhosis.
Avatar_m_tn Have had severe back pains (old fracture) and have been prescribed Tramadol and Gabapentin. Will taking these drugs damaged the liver preventing UDT at 6 months? These drugs are not liver friendly. Geno 2b started tx 11/21/08 and was UDT @ 4 ,12 and 24 weeks (3-3.
Avatar_f_tn I have been on liquid diet since Friday and now get diarrhea even when I eat Jello. Oh and I forgot to mention, my liver enzymes are always high when this happens. I'm so frustrated. Has anyone experienced anything similar? If so, has anything helped?
Avatar_n_tn Stay Hydrated - Drink sufficient amounts of water to keep the entire body hydrated. For more on water and liver disease, read How Much Water Does Your Liver Need? 4. Avoid Soap - Use a non-soap cleanser such as Cetaphil or a similar substitute to prevent excessive drying of the skin. 5. Take Milk Thistle - Since milk thistle protects liver cells from damage and aids in detoxification, this herb can help prevent the backup of toxins in the bloodstream. 6.
Avatar_m_tn I ask my pain mngmnt dr if there was anything else he could give me, as I was worried about my liver. He gave me Gabapentin. I've read that it can help with opiate withdrawals and is good at pain management. Just filled the 'script last night and it does make me feel quite dizzy and off-balance. No hydro yet today but I'm ready to take some - this Gabapentin is kinda weird. Anyone have any experience with Gabapentin? I'd love to hear your take on this drug.
Avatar_n_tn I don't think that amount of wine alone would elevate you enzymes but with the drugs you're taking I really don't know. I believe that Skelaxin may be associated with elevated liver enzymes is some people but again, I am not sure of this. I would Google all of the drugs you're taking with the word "liver" or "hepatic" eg "Skelaxin Liver". Or just "Skelaxin" alone and try to find a reputable drug site and check side effects or contraindications.
Avatar_n_tn I went to the neurologist yesterday and was told the nerve damage is permanant and the neuropathy was here to stay and the only med I can take is gabapentin which 2400mg a day to me is alot.I still add a couple 5mg of oxicodone to the mix, hopefully the pain will stop .If not Anybody who might have a better idea or a solution I will gladly listen.?
Avatar_m_tn Hello, my doctor told me that I have elevated liver enzymes they have been around 100 for 6 months now. I take 800mg gabapentin 3 times a day and 60mg cymbalta once per day. I have peripheral neuropathy in my feet, legs and hands. I seem to have a constant recurring low grade fever, fatigue and dizziness. Any ideas?
Avatar_f_tn hi. i believe cymbalta, gabapentin and alprazolam carry an alcohol use warning. i know for a fact that mixing booze with alprazolam is dangerous as they are both sedatig drugs which when combined are very potent. is he having problems as a result of this? usually there are negative consequences that need to be apparent before one will consider trying to quit. has he ever been to treatment or aa?
Avatar_f_tn 2 x's a day and Gabapentin 300 mg. 3 x's a day and gabapentin 100 mg. at bedtime. My cymbalta and gabapentin made my cholesterol worse. From 220 it went to 311 total cholesterol. Head injury car wreck that is why I need the meds. PTSD, post concussion syndrome and depression. I just had the berkley tests done and they said i have 9p21 genotype. My father and grandmother both had strokes. They were clearing out my fathers carotid artery and he had a stroke after that in intensive care.
Avatar_f_tn Mey momof Itching and liver disease has never been thoroughly understood. An increase in bilirubin levels may sometimes have this effect and very often bili levels will rise as a result of treatment more specifically because of possible "anemia.. I would not worry about this whatsoever .
Avatar_n_tn He also suffers from noise anxiety and becomes extremely destructive ( tearing house apart behavior)around loud noises(fireworks, gunshots, thunder etc). He has been taking Gabapentin and Fluoxetine for the noise anxiety for 1.5 years. We have moved him into a secure safe room and that limits the destruction. I'm looking for any advice on other things that I could do to stop the seizures. Since I started the meds , 4 days ago he is occasionally weak in the rear legs .
Avatar_f_tn There are some common medications that should not be mixed with alcohol. Tegretol, Lyrica and Gabapentin (most of the anti-seizure medications) should not be combined with alcohol. They potentate the effects of the alcohol. It is true that alcohol decreases respiratory drive and potentating this effect is not a "good thing," but narcotics (even in small doses) are more potent respiratory depressants. I guess the question more "Should I drink?
Avatar_n_tn at bed time for 10 years and it wasn't doing anything for me and so I began to taper off gabapentin and experienced a god awful withdrawal, my Doctor had no advise as to how to properly taper and so I did on line research and found your post and a couple of other posts suggesting that I might have a magnesium defieciency and decided to check out some of the magnesium supplements available one of them was (ionic-fizz Magnesium plus) I was stuck at 1200 mg.
