Gabapentin and gaba

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin and gaba

neurontin

Avatar n tn Your body uses taurine and B6 plus other cofactors to manufacture GABA, but gabapentin is pure GABA that bypasses the brain. Sometimes you can get a doctor to continue to refill prescriptions even if you can't afford to see him or her anymore, and there are community health clinics for people who can't afford healthcare. There are other ways to attack pain, of course, but the methods would depend on why you have the pain.
11079760 tn?1483386130 It stopped working for the nerve pain in my feet and I replaced it with first Elavil and then a combination of Elavil and Lyrica. You may be able to find relief for your symptoms without gaba.
Avatar m tn I've read that both tricyclic antidepressants and Ca blockers may cause gastroparesis. I have been taking those and have these symptoms, but not sure if the gastroparesis is due to the pain meds. Unfortunately, listed side effects never provide probability of the side effects. For those of you taking these drugs (or especially gabapentin) can you comment if you have this side effect?
Avatar f tn Gabapentin is a drug that many finds poops out and needs to be increased on a regular basis until you're too high to do it anymore. There used to be someone on this website who used it for anxiety, and he found it worked when he reached the maximum dose and it pooped out to go down for awhile and back up again. Was a long time ago, so don't know how he did it. Was on the anxiety forum, I think.
Avatar f tn Now, it’s time to allow your system to find its base line and start functioning naturally. You have done great and should be very happy with the results. Congratulations!
6937315 tn?1386287618 I've been prescribed it by my psychiatrist for anxiety, but have so far been afraid to take it, but my situation stems from a bad reaction to stopping a medication years ago so I'm kind of at the desperation stage. She says it does help some people. So I can't give you my own experience but can tell you it is used off-label for anxiety. It's basically GABA, which is something the brain uses to produce calm and pain relief, and is what benzos target.
Avatar f tn yes you certainly can. I have been on gabapentin 1800mg (for neuropathic pain) for 5 years now and Lamictal 150mg (lowered from 300mg originally)..for abt 18 months this I take for mood stabilizing. I have noticed no side effects from either drug alone or combined, except possibly some short term memory problems that may or maynot be related to the lamictal.
Avatar f tn ) Good luck and great job getting this far. Not everything works the same for everyone. I hope you find what helps you through w/d. Drink Lots of water and take some vitamins.
4943237 tn?1428991095 Missing a dose of gabapentin would not cause 'breakthrough' symptoms, and gabapentin doesn't prevent anything. If it works, it just puts a damper on nerve pain, which can get worse as the med wears off. Of course, everyone is different, but still, I'm betting that the itching is just a (horribly annoying) coincidence. If it keeps up, try asking your neuro for a stronger dose, since at present you're at only half of the max safe level per day.
Avatar f tn Call the doctor who gave you the gabapentin. Check to see if the symptoms you are having are listed as side effects of the gaba.
Avatar f tn I just had an issue with Gabapentin...I have IBS and was on Miralax to help and it was working...until I took the Gabapentin.....I had one heck of a time getting regulated again..... Time frame.......almost 2 months to get back on track after stopping the meds. And may I add...I was on the Miralax the whole month that I took the gabapentin. May I ask Y u were rx'd it?...maybe another rx will work better.
874521 tn?1424116797 Even though it says on the insert to stay away from grapefruit and maybe other citrus while on gaba, I also discovered that drinking Squirt and some other popular clear sodas with citrus will greatly interact with gaba and cause dizziness and other negatives like feeling of being slightly drunk.
393986 tn?1303825975 Gabapentin is structurally related to the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) but it does not modify GABAA or GABAB radioligand binding, it is not converted metabolically into GABA or a GABA agonist, and it is not an inhibitor of GABA uptake or degradation.
Avatar f tn You may also want to look into Picamilon , made by combining a GABA derivative and Niacin which is sold as an OTC dietary supplement in the U.S.A. Not sure where you live. Picamilon can cross the blood brain barrier , as this has been a possible limitation with other GABA supplements. There's a good article on Picamilon, in the Life Extension Magazine, if you wish to read it. Just do search. It's funny- when I first read your post not getting ANY sleep!
1370202 tn?1315348638 i there are four parts they make the brain gaba and i no the supplements help to,,,well i wish i could get offffffffffffffffffff please help the panic is bad
634733 tn?1316625992 Gabapentin and Lyrica are anti-seizure medications (this class of drugs also reduces neuropathic pain) that effect the voltage gating of calcium channels in the nervous system. Just about all of the anti-seizure medications "can" (but not always do) cause weight gain. These drugs decrease certain neurotransmitters and increase neuronal GABA levels.
8496079 tn?1398412516 Gabapentin was originally a synthetic chemical composition designed to mimic the neurotransmitter GABA and based on this fact alone, you may want to ask your doctor for a neurotransmitter assessment (you cannot ask for a test for GABA deficiency as these tests are reserved for pharmaceutical research to develop psyche meds and anti-depressants).
Avatar f tn I was on gabapentin. it did well helping my all around aches and pains (joint and muscle's). the one and only thing about it was that I felt drossy the whole next morning.
Avatar m tn This is something rehab facilities do -- cold turkey. But cold turkey on benzos can cause seizures, so this is clearly malpractice. Benzos are considered by addiction specialists to be the hardest as to prolonged withdrawals -- but probably only because they don't technically define antidepressants as addictive -- so I would get on the horn with everyone you can think of -- your psychiatrist, the rehab facility, whoever -- and if it comes to it threaten malpractice.
1168718 tn?1464983535 Hi guys, I have a question for you all. I have been sufferring alot of pain in my bones and such, and the gabapentin, and muscle spasm drugs aren't taking it away. I was wondering what or if you take something else for this kind of pain, and if so, what can you maybe suggest, I don't really want to go to my morphine. ( but I have some from before) ...... I have been sufffering from a chronic yeast infection, and I'm wondering if this is what might be happening.
4544656 tn?1371593548 But something recently was sent to all the local hospital and doctors from our police chief warning about pill abuse and gabapentin was on the list of drugs being abused.
5986700 tn?1380791380 some people have used gaba....
Avatar m tn Congrats on Day 8! I'm a former hydro user and also a former gabapentin person. Gabapentin is not addictive. I was on 300 mg/3x a day, too. At some point in my recovery, I decided to get off every single Rx I was on and see what I would be like w/o an antidepressant, pain med, muscle relaxer or gaba for my nerve damage. I weaned off the gabap and stopped after a week at 1 300 mg/day. It chose to take it at night to assist with my sleep. If it has helped you, that's really great!
2033870 tn?1329481339 Seems like the definition of rapid cycling bi polar would allow many bi polar people to fit that category. I am manic bi polar myself and i cant tell you much about neurontin but it must be better than xanax because i can pop 6 or 8 xanax and it wont even slightly slow me down. I have had a lot of luck with a drug called symbyax. Its a good drug if you got good insurance but too expensive if you dont. It finally got too weak for me though and i just quit medication.
