Avatar f tn These are the times to test 1] preprandial fasting [nothing to eat or drink [except water] for 8-10 hours] - this will provide an insight on how much glucose your liver dumps in anticipation of your awakening energy needed. 2] preprandial [before meal] - this will provide a baseline measurement against how the foods you consumed affected your glucose levels 3] postprandial [2-3 hours after meal] - this is when glucose from foods you consumed plateau in your bloodstream.
Avatar f tn For the heck of it, I tested myself three times in a row (same time, same meter) for fasting reading and got three different answers...89, 83, 93. Then decided to test with a second meter (got it free with purchase of strips) and got three different readings again, on that meter. So, I took all 6 readings at the same time and got 6 different readings. My readings from the two meters were: 89/98, 83/73, 93/78 I realize these are all good readings.
Avatar n tn It would help to know the make/model of your glucose meter. This way we could search the availability and low cost pricing of these unknown test strips. You can start by writing to the mfg to see if they offer free or reduced cost supplies. You also can search for and inquire at free clinics in your area. Use Google search for free clinics XXX, ZZ, where XXX is your city and ZZ the state. Another source which provides links to "free" diabetic supplies is http://tinyurl.
Avatar m tn You need to eat more. You should test your glucose two hours after you eat. Your fasting blood sugar should 80 to 110. Your blood sugar dropped 6 points is only because it didn't have time to react. Since you didn't wait two hours.
Avatar f tn Diagnosed about 4 months ago and use one touch meter to test I have been vigilant watching what I eat.this has happened quite a few timesfor example, . I test two hours after meal and am at 133, which I think is high for what my meal was. Only Two minutes later I test again and meter drops to 117?? Is meter not good or broken? Should I change meters?
Avatar m tn Buddy - Be sure to include some sort of 30-60 minute daily exercise, like walking for example. Exercise helps to: • Burn off excess fat • Improve insulin production which helps lower glucose levels • Lower blood pressure • Improve overall health When exercising the body requires fuel/energy. It gets this from your muscles and liver. Walking briskly like you're late to catching your airplane flight makes the muscles and liver release stored glucose, in turn you burn this off.
Avatar n tn Dear Jerry, Again i'm no doctor but when i do get a blood test done i also do a reading on my meter and though they may be off it isn't 10% to 20%. And when i compare my note with my endocrinologist, she says that is well within the lab specs for a test. But i'm usually high in my meter test. Hope other may shed more light on this. Being a little off is within the parameters of lab type tests.
503651 tn?1223174601 Inconsistent meter readings can and will happen. Here are some things you need to be aware of about home test meters; 1. Home meters run off of a photo cell battery. The battery may have drained below its normal usage mark resulting in inaccurate readings. Change the battery if your meter allows it. 2. Meters should be calibrated every three months. 3. Lets not forget that mechanical/electronic things fail out of the blue. This might be the case with your meter. 4.
Avatar m tn It's good to see that you are trying to manage your glucose levels b4 they get out of control. An OGTT requires you to be sedentary 2 hours post test. Being active 1 hour post defeated your "homemade" test. See this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose_tolerance_test Q: "What can be the normal glucose level after 3-4 hours lunch or dinner time" A: Glucose peaks 2-3 hours after meals where the normal value is <180 mg/dl and the optimum is <140 mg/dl.
Avatar f tn I would like your opinion on which glucose meter is best. My insurance will pay for one either from Abbot or Lifescan. I've gone online and I get mixed reviews on the One Touch Ultra and Freestyle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn it stinks when you have a bad doctor! My endo was all for me following my glucose levels with a test meter at home...I was having hypoglycemic issues for a while. He thought it was very responsible of me to track it on my own. There are good doctors out there who will commend you for being a good self reliant patient. You just have to search. The glucose tolerance tests aren't real reliable. What were your latest lab results Barb? Myabe you are being undertreated.
Avatar n tn I am Insulin Resistant. I recently ordered a free blood glucose meter after feeling severe hypoglycemic effects after eating fruit lately. I ate a candy bar, then checked my sugars two hours later. It read 168. Is it possible that I have crossed into the diabetic zone?
Avatar f tn Use your home meter to test your glucose levels. If you're having memory issues start a log - date/time/dose - so you have something to reference in the future.
Avatar f tn the first, initial test is 1-hour... if you fail, you have to do the 3-hour test.. or that's how it was for me, in South Carolina.. maybe some places are different? not sure. I failed the 1-hour, took the 3-hour, and passed. good luck & congrats!!
212161 tn?1599427282 So do you test fasting glucose in the morning occationaly with a home meter? Is this as accurate for a fasting glucose test as going to the dr 's lab? I think I need to get one of these home testers.
Avatar f tn Intook my 1-hour glucose test this morning. It was horrible. I am praying I don't have to take the 3-hour one. I have been nauseous since. Anyone else get nauseous after drinking that awful drink?!?!
Avatar n tn If you're concerned about your glucose level you can purchase a home test meter. Top rated is Johnson & Johnson's Ultra Mini. And, yes, instructions are included on how to use the meter. Click on the link below then click on Buy to find a store. Approx cost is $20.00 US. http://tinyurl.
Avatar f tn The TSH over 3 would point to Hypothyroidism (Low thyroid or more simply "Hypo") This would warrant at best further testing of thyroid. Specifically demand to be tested for Free T4 and Free T3 tests. Be very specific with the word "FREE". It is NOT about the cost of the test. Rather it is noting a specific test that counts the hormone that is NOT attached to a protein. And thus "free" meaning all by itself.
Avatar f tn First, run to Walmart, and get a blood glucose meter so he can test daily at home. Without one, you're flying blind. Then until you can read up on low carb food preparation, cut all of the "white foods"; not reduce, cut! That means sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes of any kind, any starchy foods. If your grandfather is ambulatory, even a small walk is beneficial in reducing blood glucose levels. Kepp testing everyday, and with no cheating hopefully he'll see the levels decline.
