Diuretics lower blood pressure by helping your body eliminate sodium and water, which reduces blood volume and decreases pressure on your artery walls. When your body excretes excessive amounts of water, it also loses potassium. This can lead to low potassium levels in your blood (hypokalemia). There are potassium-sparing diuretics that don't cause this problem.

Based on my analysis of blood tests, my 70-year old aunt currently has Stage 3b CKD and is actually close to Stage 4. Back in 8/2008, her GFR was 49.5. A year later, it's 32. This is a loss of 17.5ml/min over 12 months. Every test I looked at, her BUN (22-23), Creatinine (1.3-1.6) and Choloride (112) are elevated. Your goal is 2000mg of sodium per day or less.

If your doctor still thinks everything is okay, then try support socks/stockings. I've been on BP meds, including olmesartan/hydrochlorothiazide, and I still need to wear support socks. I have a pair for light support and a pair for moderate support for days when I'll be on my feet a lot. This also helps my ankle pain. Just a thought.

He has terrible abdominal swelling, fluid retention, and feeling such fullness after any exercise. We cannot explain this. He is on a very healthy diet, low sodium, low carb, and not super high protein, just well balanced. This is causing him to be extremely uncomfortable. My MD put me on Hyzaar for hypertension. Previously I had been on Cozaar but she changed it to Hyzaar for the added benefit of the diuretic. I noticed my drug company autosubbed generic Losortan. The bottle doesn't say anything about hydrochlorothiazide being included. Could I be getting the wrong thing, or should I assume some form of hydrochlorothiazide is included?

I will be transitioning to propanolol 20 mg (and hydrochlorothiazide) twice daily soon - my doctor wants me to transition by taking propanolol - 1/2 of 20 mg twice a day for one week and then the full 20 mg twice daily. Why? Won't that cause rebound hypertension? Thanks.

When I had severe low sodium levels I was placed on fluid restriction. No more than 24 oz of liquid per day. It was terrible but it worked and I.lived that way for 7 yrs until they found what caused it.
