Fosamax femur fractures

Common Questions and Answers about Fosamax femur fractures

fosamax

Avatar m tn Fosamax has been linked in long-term users to the development of low-impact femoral fractures. In the event of a fracture fosamax may interfere with remodeling and healing. However, the decision to continue or quit would need to be taken by his treating doctor; keeping in view the initial condition for which it was advised and the risks Vs benefits. You may like to discus in detail with his treating doctor. Hope this is helpful. Take care!
Avatar m tn The prescription drug Fosamax (the generic is alendronate sodium) is a medication which has been prescribed to hundreds of thousands of postmenopausal women to treat osteoporosis and help increase bone mass thereby reducing the chance of spinal or non-spinal fractures. Fosamax has also been prescribed to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Brand name Fosamax is manufactured in the United States by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp., a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc.
Avatar f tn I do want to caution your use of the Fosamax though. New studies have shown issues with femur bone fractures (brittle bone) and esophagal problems. There are other ways to strengthen bones naturally without taking biphosphonates. I'd get your vitamin D & calcium levels checked too since an underactive thryoid can cause problems with metabolism/regeneration of bone (so can too much thryoid hormone!) That is what makes Hashis difficult to deal with due to the hyper/hypo rollercoaster.
Avatar n tn Not long ago a report was released about a possible link between these drugs and esophagal cancer - and also femur fractures because long term use of these drugs can actually cause brittle bones. The new recommendation from doctors (including my new primary care) is to not use them more than 5 years. Sorry to throw some scare out there - but I've spent 5 years reading all I can about osteoporosis, and those drugs would be the very last option for me. I stress, for "me".
159063 tn?1247272817 The foundations of the modern era of the treatment of proximal femur fractures were laid by Cooper who in 1819 published the first therapeutically oriented classification of these fractures. During the following 100 years the clinical diagnostics were further developed; five classifications of proximal femur fractures were formulated including the terminology used until now (peritrochanteric, intertrochanteric), and surgical treatment was started.
Avatar m tn my baby presented with a fractured femur due to an accident. this was missed twice by doctors due to no swelling or bruising. they constantly rotated her legs and stretched them out again to check her hips before fracture was dianosed. then they put a cast on on the bottom of her leg instead of the top. would all of these mistakes have made the fracture worse than it originally was.
Avatar f tn When I was 31 y.o. I had an accident that left me w/ a broken femur ... leading up to days later a “ titanium rod “ being inserted into the broken femur . The initial days , etc. obvious moments of pain happened , over the years since then w/ the break eventually being healed = very ..,... minimal pain . In getting older = 64 y.o. now within the past couple of years thereabouts pain is reaccuring more & more , causing pain also in my hips and other leg .
Avatar f tn These medications have been shown to increase bone mass, prevent bone loss, and to decrease the incidence of bone fractures. Fosamax and Actonal have the advantage of a once-a-week administration, as opposed to the alternative of daily administration. Biphosphonates should be taken on an empty stomach, along with at least 8 ounces of water. The patient should swallow the tablet while in an upright position and not lie down for 30 minutes after taking this drug.
Avatar m tn She has been a long history of various health issues that started with very frequent hair line fractures of her femur head/neck of the femur area on BOTH sides of her legs close to groin area. This continued for years till she has been unable to walk anymore due to constant re-occurrence. Over past couple years she is under the grip of Peripheral Neuropathy of legs as well as now hands. She has almost lost control of or her hand movements by over 60%.

Avatar f tn DEXA scan showed increased bone density loss to that of a DEXA scan done before bc (ordered by gastro due to 30+ yrs of steroids). BC surgeon prescribed Fosamax and Calcichew/Vit.D3. A bone scan showed osteo arthritis in both hips, hands and feet. No meds prescribed. I am on weekly injections of 12.5 mg methotrexate for Crohn's. My GP suggested I stop the Arimidex for 3-4 weeks to see if the pain diminished, which miraculously it has.
Avatar f tn Sometimes femur fractures treated with an IM nail and fixatation at both ends don not heal because they are slightly "overdistracted" and not allowed to compress because of the screws at both ends. Removing the distal screws, and allowing weight bearing, with promote the compression and hopefully jumpstart the healing process. The screw removal is a relatively benign procedure, and the results can be dramatic. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Latest exams show it has spread to the other humerus and also both femur bones. Has anyone seen anything similar? (sorry, no images available, I just have the reports).
Avatar f tn Before 4 months on 7th December I had an accident and I had fracture in femur, undisplaced fractures in lamina and pedicle of c5 vertebrae, upper superior facet of c6 vertebrae, right frontal sinus, right maxillary sinus and a displaced fracture in mandibular subcondyle. After 2 months I started experiencing vibrations only in my back when I flex my neck, so I met a neurologist and had an mri of my cervical vertebrae.
Avatar f tn I also had bilateral femur fractures and rods inserted in eaxh leg. One leg healed very well but the other not only did not heal but the titanium rod broke in two. The only option was to have the broken rod removed and a new rod inserted. I am no spring chicken like you but I would like to tell you the surgery went great and I am back to my old self. Riding bikes and swimming 2 miles a day. Find a surgeon you can trust and discuss your concerns openly with him. Then decide what is best for you.
Avatar m tn Hello, I am 23 years old and 4 months ago I was involved in a motorcycle accident in which I fractured several bones. I suffered compound fractures of my femur, tibia, and fib. I also fractured 3 ribs and my left upper scapula. All fractures were on my left side. I have been attending physical therapy for 3 months and have progressed significantly. My question is, what dietary changes can I make to aid the bone healing process?
570405 tn?1216957944 She has advanced osteoporosis at age 55, diabetic, steroid dependant, multiple vertabrae compression fractures-one with a bone chip in the spinal canal (she's already on fosamax). She is on 150mg of time-released morphine a day, and ora-morph and oxycodone for pain spikes and breakthrough pain. She is still crying and screaming much of the time for the pain.
Avatar f tn I need your expert opinion on something: I'm taking weekly generic Fosamax, daily 1200 calcium, daily 1400 D, and every other week 50,000 D. I hit menoapuse about 4 years ago. I have some pretty bad arthritis in my R hip, but my L is much more normal, though not totally normal. I walk briskly and climb stairs 5 days a week. > > 2-3 years ago I had taken the high dose D for 1 year, so my scores momentarily shot way up. Then last year my osteoporosis scores dropped 0.1 or 0.
999780 tn?1263671971 On the x-ray it was found that all 4 of his leg bones are different lengths. His left femur measures 23.5cm and left tibia measures 20.4cm.The total leg length measurement including the knee joint space is 44.9cm. The right femur measures 24.7cm in length and the right tibia measures 19.9cm in length. The total right leg length measurement including the knee joint space is 45.5cm. There is a 6mm leg length discrepancy, shorter on the left. No fractures or dislocations are seen.
Avatar f tn My mother somehow - a mystery - had her femur shattered - she told me about it while struggling to speak w/ low oxygen at a minimum 2 1/4hours later when I was allowed to see her- no one told us about break and about very low oxygen - O2 - 81- thereafter she started trembling, convulsions, and has been minimally responsive since then - dr. is not talking - Break was diagnosed in E.R. after she started shaking & non acute hosp where she was did not say anything to us - found her fine.
Avatar n tn Your brother need to seek the help of a surgeon qualified to repair facial fractures. If too long an interval occurs (over three to four weeks), the bones will heal in an abnormal position and repair then becomes much more difficult.
Avatar f tn Nonunion or failure of the fracture to heal occurs in 10-30% of fractures of the neck of the femur (thigh bone) which is usually apparent within one year of the fracture and may be accompanied by osteonecrosis (bone death), irrespective of the cause of fracture. Majority of patients with non-union will require a re-operation.
Avatar m tn Anyone hear the All Things Considered piece on how Fosamax became a bestseller for bone density? A great story, and a cautionary tale of our current pharmaceutical industry and their voracious hunger to sell meds.
Avatar f tn I had a bad car accident when I was 19 and had multiple fractures. I recovered in about three months from a broken leg, femur, hip, arm, shoulder and pelvis all on my right side.... The docs were pretty impressed but I did it all because I couldn't afford.to stay in bed and needed a fast recoverie. All I'm saying hunn is that just because the situation seems bad it doesn't mean it will be like that for ever.
Avatar f tn 9 145lbs, Caucasian/South Asian Male I was diagnosed with having level 4 stress fractures in both of my femoral necks and level 2 stress fractures in each of my ankles, in November of 2016, I was near the end of basic training and due to what I'm assuming was these sprint exercises we did on the track, followed by shuttle sprints and then an 8 mile ruck ended up hurting me pretty bad. I was put on crutches and calcium pills until they were able to do all of the necessary tests.
Avatar f tn There must be a way go separate these conditions. I have osteoporosis (fractures of ribs times 3 three) fx l wrist, fx l elbow, fx thoracic vert. x two. Myofacial pain Myositis DDD entire spine with osteophytes osteoarthritis Cercical spine DDD facet joint Displaced vertebrae Facet joint arthralgia Had epidurals, blocks and rhizotomy reducing pain by about 90%.
Avatar m tn Seperated and severly fractures my left elbow, compound fracture of my left femur, tore off my right knee cap, broke my right wrist and suffered additional head trauma. Intensive care for three weeks. several lengty surgeries (the longest was over 12 hours) Hospital for another month and, again, hours and hours of physical therapy plus a few more surgeries (and tons of titanium). I pretty much feel like **** everyday. I just don't know if I am a hypocondriac, lucky?
