Forteo and osteonecrosis of the jaw

Common Questions and Answers about Forteo and osteonecrosis of the jaw

forteo

Avatar m tn Yes, I saw that osteonecrosis. Scary. The blood supply actually stops flowing to the jaw and it dies. She is taking calcim supplements and vitamine D with 50,000 IU per week. But I still don't understand the underlying cause of the bone loss. Wonder if her her low thyroid chemistry causes this. Wonder if she would take synthroid if her problem would resolve.
Avatar n tn There are reports that link people taking IV fosamx to osteonecrosis of the bone having oral and maxilofacial surgery. Treatment really depends upon degree of severity. Most of the time patients are advised hyperbaric chambers.
Avatar f tn t let me take things like actonel or that class of drugs as my osteoporosis affected the bones in my jaw and they are afraid to take the chance as with those drugs there is a risk. I was disappointmented about the forteo. I think that drug is more dangerous than its worth personally. Are you still working as an RN? I am not able to work now and I miss it so much. Let me know you turn out regarding the forteo.
Avatar f tn i have learned how to eat better, exercise as good as i can with breathing problems and tolerate the pain of bone and muscle headaches hair thining and hair loss and hair growing out of the end of my nose ! i learned to go with the flow.. if you hurt curl up and take a nap. lighten the amount that you eat and eat more times a day. eat ll the fresh veggies you can and fruit. pay attention to the blood and calcuim if high follow the proticols in place.
Avatar n tn I took Forteo for 10 months. and i can barely walk. i took Tymlos for the first 6 months and was fine, and then Forteo for 10 months. my strength is gone, my feet hurt wearing shoes, i have stomach pain when exercising, and ave thigh muscle cramps, neck pain, and can't sleep. I had confusion when driving, so i told my doctor i'm done with this. I know where i'm going these days, but I now use a walker around the house, elastic knee braces to walk on my own.
Avatar n tn The biophosphonate drugs have been known to cause osteonecrosis (infection causing loss of bone) of the jaw. A disease you do not want to get. The lecturer said she would never recommend anyone taking them. Having an extraction or even a root canal after taking these drugs can initiate the infection in the bone.
Avatar m tn The core decompression they usually just drill little holes directly into the side of the joint affected to allow blood to flow around the joint and dead bone and marrow, thus allowing new growth, since mine was so different and my whole leg, they literally hollowed out my right femur and tibia bones, my cartilage was 100% not a thing wrong with it ODD the #1 knee surgeon in Chicago thought.
Avatar n tn My experience with Forteo is that the calcium does not rise much and these are not common side effects - but it is possible. Also, would re-evaluate pre-Forteo PTH and calcium levels to make sure you did not have mild primary hyperpara before starting Forteo. If still in doubt, sometimes a break from the medication and a future re-challenge can help establish cause-effect.
Avatar m tn t been active on the forum since this thread was posted. You might do a google search for a class action suit stemming from the use of Forteo injections.
Avatar f tn Yes, I took the shots for 2 years more than ten years ago. It apparently DID build bone but after a decade+ I am having several of the "possible side effects" that I had to sign off on, and I am wondering if there is anyone else in this community who finished the treatment and has had a long enough time frame SINCE to see any long term side effects. Doctors know NOTHING about these drugs, so I thought I'd try to get some anecdotal information from others who used FORTEO.
Avatar f tn html This is the complete info which I doubt you have seen (It is typically on the insert for the doctor and not the insert for the patient. (At the bottom under post marketing studies you will see that others have had similar adverse reactions and at the top you will see a black box warning.
Avatar f tn Its my understanding that you have to inject forteo for two years and following that you have the reclast IV.....one is no good without the other says my physician........I am losing my hair, gaining weight and now severe leg cramoing....I stopped injections today after 6 months of injections........
Avatar f tn com/arthritis/avascular-necrosis-osteonecrosis-symptoms-treatments#2. And here is an overview of the type of surgery that she had https://nyulangone.org/conditions/osteonecrosis/treatments/joint-preserving-surgery-for-osteonecrosis. I do hope it wasn't useless to have the surgery but I would question that doctor about what is next if they feel that way. There are other treatment options. And it's very important to find the core cause of why it is happening to begin with.
Avatar f tn mac790, were you able to get Harvoni through Lilly? And actually, compared to the cost of Harvoni at $80000, $5000 sounds pretty reasonable, and almost within reach if I am willing to trash my retirement. It's frustrating, knowing a cure is right within reach but so very far, far away because of a stupid thing like money.
Avatar m tn hi there, I have ficat stage 2 ON of the femoral head - will buying a TENS / EMS machine such as neurotrac help to arrest the disease?
Avatar f tn Your doctor (after consulting his PDR, if necessary) or your pharmacist should be able to provide the name and address of the pharmaceutical company that makes the drug in which you are interested. (Or you could do an Internet search for it, if you don't want to bother them.) You might also want to contact the National Osteoporosis Foundation for more information about that diagnosis, and possible sources of assistance for treatment of it. Best wishes...
Avatar n tn He said it showed a small fracture in the subcondrieal (sp?) and changes in the bone marrow in the ends of the large bones. He said it appeared the marrow was not getting sufficient blood supply. (Swelling contributed to that?). He put me on crutches for the next two weeks said to stay off that leg and made an appointment two weeks out. My question is if the bone marrow is changing due to lack of blood supply it seem insufficient to not review it for two weeks. Is my concern valid?
Avatar n tn when I speak to my patients and explain the interconnectivity of the mouth and specifically the lower jaw to the Cervical (neck) spine and the more they ususally have a blank look on their face. The simple answer is that it could be both ways, meaning yes your scoliosis could have effected your jaw position and/or the other way, the jaw position could have caused your scoliosis.. How to treat it.. stay away from surgery. Find yourself a good Chiropractor, and a Neuromuscular dentist.
Avatar f tn Severe Bloating-my stomach becomes very distended, it craps in the lower abdominal area, I often get a wave of nausea and really hot. Sometimes the food will come up in undigested chunks. Often I'll have to rush to the bathroom for a bowl movement. I do have frequent bowl movements and oftentimes whole undigested chunks of food will be in my stools. When severe I may throw up rather violently and it'll get into my sinus and cause facial swelling, ear aches and burning esophagus.
Avatar n tn They just removed my submandibular gland last week, along with a lymph node that was piggybacking on it, and a calcified ligament that runs from the back of the right ear to the bottomw of the jaw line. There was not any blockage in the submandibular gland to cause it to enlarge or be painful, to be honest they do not know what they removed. They removed it for two reasons; very painful, and the complex nodule had grown in size. What size is the nodule?
908504 tn?1269103899 He also wanted me to try the injections of Forteo but my Aunt had bone cancer in her hips so I am somewhat leary of that drug. Any info will be greatly appreciated as I am in really bad pain.
Avatar n tn Well, since you have dry eyes, ears and nasal passages, there is a possibility that you are suffering from Sjogren’s syndrome. This is an autoimmune disease attacking the moisture producing glands of the body. If at all it is Sjogren’s Syndrome, you may find useful information on this link: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/sjogrens/sjogrens.htm I would strongly recommend you to consult an internal medicine specialist. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage.
Avatar n tn Regarding left jaw and neck- you'll want to make sure you don't have a heart issue, as pain can refer to these areas from the heart. And you may want to get a doppler of your carotid, to make sure it is fully patent. Also, you might go to a dentist specializing in TMJ disorders or a maxillofacial specialist, because a problem with the jaw is strongly suspect with headache on the side with jaw pain. Do you clench or grind your teeth when you sleep?
Avatar m tn Im pretty sure that pain on that sides of my neck is from my back but what about the under the jaw pains that comes and go can back pain cause this at all?
Avatar f tn What are the symtoms of tmj? It seems like my jaw is constantly tight. I don't notice clenching my teeth that often but I know I do it. I have had problems with only the left side of neck shoulder and upper back and also I get a twingy head pain in left temple when bending over. Also left side of head has a constant pressure feeling. So now after having MRI's and nothinh there, I am wondering if it's tmj or clenching of the teeth after all I have dealt with anxiety for 2 years.
