Common Questions and Answers about Fluoxetine loss of appetite

There ARE ADs out there that will not cause weight gain..........some are even known to cause weight loss. If ANY part of your depression centered around your weight, your doctor should not have put you on one that is notorious for weight gain. I looked up the side effects for Celexa and found listed under GI: Anorexia and decreased appetite. But please understand that we all react differently to medications. I've known people to LOSE weight on Prozac...........
I've never heard of Vyvanse. It sounds to me like you may be experiencing side effects of Prozac. It might be an idea to go to your family doctor and tell her or him about the symptoms you're experiencing. Good luck.
I take 40mg of fluoxetine a day in the mornings. I didn't start leveling out until after I had been taking it a month. So, just give it some time. Make sure you take it at the same time every day, that is really important. And don't drink alcohol, that is important too. If you think it's not working for you after two months, then I would go back to the doctor and discuss it with them. You also should keep a daily journal to help you and the doctor see the affects of the medicine.
Namaste maro sathi! (That's the only Nepali phrase I remember) While psychiatric medicine is sometimes a necessary "evil" ( for some disorders it could mean the difference between life and death) there's very little value in seeking other members' opinions on this class of drugs. These drugs are usually taken orally, get absorbed in the blood then go through the liver, which recognizes them as foreign, so it modifies them to be passed out.
I agree with the above person-I have been Effexor XR 75mg-150mg for a few months now. I don't have much of an appetite, and I get full fast. I have lost at least 10 pounds, where I could not lose it before. I have not lost my sex drive at all. I am more rested and have more clear thinking. I was put on the med to help control my headaches. But, I also had to make some lifestyle changes, including getting more rest, eating a little differently, changing my vitamins, etc.

nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, dry mouth, trouble sleeping, dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, or sweating may occur. Unusual or severe mental/mood changes such as anxiety, weight loss, and vision changes may also be observed. For example, no TEAS was reported in two trials of fluoxetine in bipolar depression42, 52. However, the pooled number of patients who received fluoxetine was low (n=38), and most of the patients came from a study that also detected low TEAS rates for the TCA imipramine42. Another major limitation of the study was the low completion rate: 43% of the patients randomized to fluoxetine dropped out of the study. Moreover, 18 of these patients (20%) concomitantly received lithium.
I started taking the Sertraline (Zoloft) and it was making me feel sickly, I have already lost a lot of weight through loss of appetite so I didn't need that. How long does it take for that sickly feeling to stop? I have been prescribed the following in the past which didn't work: Fluoxetine (Prozac), Citalopram (Celexa). Should i stick with the Zoloft or should i try the Mirtazapine?
i am not on zoloft but i am on fluoxetine wich is the same as prozack, and i have had a terrible time with side effects, upset stomach , loss of appetite, weak very weak legs and muscle cramps, headachs im just waiting for them to go away and get on with it , i hope that you have good luck let me know how you do ! this is the first time i have dealt with anxiety also so its all new to me but this forum has helped put my mind at ease a lil , just knowing im not alone!!!
I have just started Fluoxetine a few days ago, which I have already had some nightmares and loss of appetite from. I know they say it takes at least two weeks to kick in but I was taking St John's wort prior to this (my doc knew of this) My serotonin levels were extremely low. I was weepy but not depressed, well, maybe a bit around period time! Anyways, I have since found out the generic is Fluoxetine but the trade name is Prozac. I didn't realise it was that and would never have taken it!
She has lived this lifestyle for 4 yrs. Was put on phenteramine 10 wks. ate even less no weight loss. Also fluoxetine. no longer takes this. She has no appetite so a suppressant to help with overeating is not necessary bec she doesn't ever overeat, she never has. She maintains this regime in fear of gaining more weight. Nobody will give her a throxine trial. Newest dr. feels she has a low BMR and wants to retest that. She is a high achieving student, lifeguard, and voluteer.
Hi There, is there a pill for grief? Sadness over the loss of your future when you have a life threatening illness will not go away with an antidepressant. Anti depressants and anti-anxiety medications can blunt the terrible pain of loss and will definitely treat clinical depression. But these pills do not change the reality of what your mother is facing.
I am on 80 mg of Fluoxetine for Depression and Anxiety . I am always tired no matter what and I cant tell if its just in my head or if its really a physical thing. I am always hungry and I eat and eat and never gain weight. (I know for a fact this is true).I am wondering if this could be caused by medication or if not, what could it be? Please help!

Another medication that is sometimes added to SSRI in the treatment of depression is bupropion (welbutrin) and it has even been shown to cause a small weight loss over the first few months (it suppresses the appetite). However, if the eating disorder you are is either anorexia or bulimia this is not an option because during clinical trails bupropion caused a slightly increased rate of new seizures in those two eating disorders.

Hi, I am on Effexor as well and have gained about 12 pounds since starting as well. My doctor doesn't think it is in direct connection with the effexor but I am struggling with whether or not I should get off it because I can't explain the weight gain. The explanation given makes sense to me, so I guess I need to focus more on my eatting habits.

I had nausea as well as loss of appetite with my upper ab pain (both left right, and settled in the middle sometimes), I Finally started getting my appetite back but I am left with, now 2 months later, still the pain. I have been experiencing nausea, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, some loss of bladder control, headache, weakness, sleepiness. It has now been about 4 days since I stopped taking the 35.7 mg dose. I would appreciate any advice about treating my symptoms. Can anyone tell me how long these symptoms will last? I did have very short episodes of dizziness and weird brain sensations but, they have pretty much gone away. I have been reading the website and forums so hope someone can help me.
I had a lot of side effects (jittery, racing mind, insomnia, dizzyness, nausea, loss of appetite, and now fatigue) BUT, they've been disappearing for the last several days and SO HAS MY ANXIETY. It's been quite a bit better. I sure hope it continues to be better like this. The PVCs are even happening less. I think I went two days without noticing one. Awesome. I'm cautiously optimistic.

After 10 days on Fluoxetine, when the initial dose was increased, I experienced some really bad side effects, like extreme agitation and complete lack of appetite. Because of depression I was already underweight, so my psychiatrist decided to switch me to Sertraline instead, to keep me from losing more weight. The first week I still had some nasty adverse effects like insomnia, sweaty hands and feet, lack of appetite and insomnia.
