Common Questions and Answers about Flonase and afrin

Avatar f tn What kind of nasal spray? Is it a prescription like Nasacort or Flonase or the OTC stuff like Afrin? If it's Afrin that is not supposed to be used all the time, it's really bad. If your nose is bleeding, that could be an infection or maybe from the spray. I'm not sure about the blood pressure. I think you should try to wean off the Afrin. You are probably having what's called *rebound* congestion. Read the label on it. It tells you not to use for more than 3 days.
Avatar f tn Hello! I've been dealing with stuffiness on and off for about 3-4 weeks now. Originally my doctors thought it was a sinus infection and gave me antibiotics. However, I think it started off with bad allergies (possibly) and because I used Afrin longer than suppose to, I'm thinking it turned into rebound congestion. Some days I have 0 congestion and some days I have some. Recently I started to cut down on the afrin (I went from twice a day to once a day) and I'm using Flonase.
612551 tn?1450022175 For reference, I have ongoing trouble with nasal congestion when lying down, sleep time. Afrin and generic work great, but if I use for a week or more I start have sneezing problems. I have other less effective means and use Afrin just a time or two a week when I feel I just can't take it any longer. If moisturizing give something I'll pay extra.. in fact I have on bottle on order. So I can answer my own question in the near future.

579469 tn?1311705550 With my steriod shot and allegra d, flonase and putting a cu-tip way up my nose with a little afrin on it helped big time. I am a Big baby too and I got off it in less than a week. I just read about Rhinostat and its basicly afrin diluted with saline sloution. A longer wean. Its does say you can use a steriod nasal inhaler with it, which would probably get you off faster. I couldn't wait 30 days or even 2 weeks personally. But good luck to you! I hope its works well for you. ps.
Avatar f tn I am taking pseudaphed during the day, benadryl at night and flonase. (Bad spelling) Now my throat is tight and it feels like I am about to get larengitis. Is it getting better or worse; should i keep doing what I am doing. I am also using afrin once in a while, and i have not allowed my ears to get wet in the shower for the past week.
Avatar f tn It depends on the type of nasal spray too. Saline and Flonase can be used every day. And if your doctor cleared you for those, that's fine. Try to avoid Afrin type nasal sprays, I cannot confirm if they are safe during pregnancy or not, but the issue with this type of spray is that you can only use it for a few days at a time.
Avatar f tn How long have you had ETD? When I was first diagnosed I was put on 3 day rotations of Afrin (3 days using it followed by 3 days not using it as Afrin is "adictive") and prednesone. Also, sinus rinses are some what helpful. I prefer the NielMed bottle to a netti pot. You have to twist wierdly to use a netti pot which was very uncomfortable to me at that time. A CT scan would shoe if there are any masses causing the blockage as opposed to allergic inflamation.
Avatar f tn She said a bump and it is on the inside toward the front inside wall of my nose. I can't feel it when I put my finger up my nose only feel it when I scrunch my nose up or wiggle it. My dr also suggested not using my Flonase for a week or so that it might be causing the soreness and bump haven't used it in 2 days and starting to feel a little better.
612551 tn?1450022175 I discussed the congestion problem and the use of both saline and Afrin-type nasal spray. He was not concerned by the use of nose spray if I didn't use it enough to get a "rebound" worsening of my congestion - I'm not sure, but think I do not suffer from a rebound, just chronic congestion that generally clears up when I get up on my feet and does not bother me most of the awake time...lying down and inactivity seems to stimulate it.
Avatar f tn I had an appt with my EP today and I asked about it. He said it most definitely could cause palpitations, especially in a person who has them anyway. So...I know there have been some questions in the past about these medications, thought I would share what my Dr. said.
Avatar m tn s who diagnosis is a dysfunctional eustacheun tubes and have prescrbed antibiotics, decongestives, Flonase steriod nose spray, and decongestive pills without any help. Anyone out there have a similar experience and possibly a cure?
Avatar f tn I've been using afrin sinus for stuffed up nose and it's safe. It works wonders.
1663704 tn?1302912377 I have had fluid behind my eardrum since September 2010. My physician looked and saw fluid behind my eardrum and said it's caused from allergies or sinuses. I do have allergies and postnasal drainage. I was prescribed Flonase for 30 days, which didn't work, then prescribed a 7 day steroid medication, this didn't help either. I have tried Allegra D, Mucinex D, Mucinex, Sudafed, Sudafed PE, Afrin, etc. I am currently trying Zyrtec.
221122 tn?1323011265 I get some nasal relief from Zicam Allergy Relief. It is "homeopathic", so not immediate acting. There are several Zicam nasal products. The Allergy can be used several times a day and as many days as needed. The idea is that after a week or so on many not need it for a while or may use it just once a day. It is also available as a swab, at considerably higher cost.
Avatar f tn I even went to the emergency room due to chest pain. I have been using Afrin nose spray twice a day for the past three days and stopped today. My symptoms started to clear up and I started to feel Normfal again. However, I took the nose spray this afternoon and within an hour all my symptoms came back. This led me to believe that the Afrin has to be causing this. I read some other forums that this has happened to other people. Are these side effects possible ?
Avatar n tn Google the drug. Any time you have questions about a drug's effects do this. There are many reliable sources for this information, plus any warnings the FDA has required from the manufacturer. All drugs are toxic, so the more you use them the more chances you have for problems. As with any suppressant medication, continued use can make the situation worse, as drugs interfere with the normal way the body functions.
Avatar m tn I used Afrin a couple days ago. One day after using it, I realized that I could not taste my food although my nose was clear. I figured it was just temporary and would return. Now, two days later, as I was just cleaning some old moldy food out of the refridgerator, I realized that I didn't smell a thing. Nothing. This has never happened to me previously. And I, too, found this forum by searching on Afrin and "olafactory loss". I am very sure it is related to the Afrin.
218451 tn?1274994552 I was out to dinner with my mother and sniffing afrin and was unable to sit still and was just generally jittery. My mother called me on it. It turned out I was using afrin way too much. I don;t remember if I had any nasal withdrawals. I do know that years later I graduated to cocaine Lokking back, I wish afrin was the extent of my usage.
Avatar f tn nasonex, afrin, mucinex-d, claritin, allegra, zyrtec, flonase, etc. Another ENT thought it was acid reflux. I tried: prilosec for 14 days, nexium for 3 days (I had too many side effects from nexium so I discontinued it). I had no symptoms of acid reflux so I felt there was no point to take these meds, but I tried anyway with no success. I got a CT scan and they found there was a cyst in my left maxillary sinus and mucus thickening in the ethmoid on the same side.
Avatar m tn What treatments has your ENT given you for the ETD? Steroids? Afrin protocol (3 day rotations of using twice a day and not using it)? Allergy treatment? That really does help with the fullness and congestion. Unfortunately since you exposed yourself to loud music, and caused damage to your ear, the rining is most likely permanent and unrelated to your other symptoms. It can be affected by the other symptoms in small ways.
1236313 tn?1295726268 I have tried Nasonex, Flonase, etc. I started allergy shots about 8 months ago. The only relief I get is from Afrin, and that doesn't even last the 12 hours. (I don't want to hear about how you shouldn't take it for more than 3 days either!) My family doctor had put me on the Z-pack and Biaxin and it works for a SHORT period of time, if at all, and then I go back to the congestion. I have had a CAT scan that shows some inflammation, but does show that I am draining.
Avatar f tn There are no quick fixes, but if it is viral it takes it course. Avoid antibiotics if viral. I use flonase or afrin (only 3-4 days at a time, then off), nasal rinses 3x day. My allergist said NOT to take antihistamines (or my zyrtec that I am on regularly). Use a decongestant only. I use Mucinex D, but watch the BP. Sometimes I use plain Sudafed(no antihistimine in it) and plain Mucinex together when I am out of Mucinex D.
Avatar n tn I immediately went to the doctor who gave me something for my cold and then inquired if i was using Afrin. She asked how long and how much. I stated probably no longer than 5 days and I had only used 2/3rds of the very small bottle. She ordered me to stop immediately and advised me of its addiction and rebound effect....... I stopped cold turkey. It was absolutely the most painful and difficult time of my life....I couldn't breath at all, couldn't sleep.
1393709 tn?1280178870 s plugged again and then I have to spray the afrin up my nostril again. I do have allergies, like running nose and itchy eye. My nose been plugged before but it was NOT this bad.
Avatar f tn I used saline nasal spray until one week before my second trimester and said screw it I'm close enough and started using Afrin and I've been using it on and off the entire pregnancy and my OB said it was fine.
