Common Questions and Answers about Fingernails iron deficiency

nail

Avatar n tn Hi there, I believe a deficiency of B12 and/or Iron could absolutely be a possible cause related to the discoloration. There are other reasons that could cause this too - but it sounds like it all started after exercising and simultaneous with the B12 deficiency. The other question I would be prone to ask is "what caused the vitamin B12 deficiency?
Avatar f tn t right or something needs to be done by simple or even big changes to get attention. It could be as simple as a calcium or iron deficiency or a more complicated thing.
Avatar f tn Nutritional deficiencies that show up in the fingernails usually are in both hands and in at least 2-3 fingernails. For example, spoon shaped finger nails that can hold a drop of water. This is called the "water drop test" may indicate an iron deficiency; this has been seen in iron deficient patients on dialysis. White spotting in several nails, both hands may indicate a zinc deficiency.
Avatar n tn Metabolic listed as one cause, vitamin deficiency, but rule out iron overload before taking any supplements as the iron in multi-vitamins if you have an iron loading issue, will make the problem worse. http://voices.yahoo.com/why-peeling-fingernails-health-concern-women-6831310.html Iron overload is way more common than anyone knows, even the medical community. www.irondisorders.
681148 tn?1437661591 It would be helpful if someone could refresh my memory on which deficiency this could be, so I can ask my doctor about it. Does iron deficiency cause any of this? I have had iron deficiency anemia more than once and suspect I have that again, but I'm wondering what else is likely the cause of these unusual nail conditions. Well, unusual for me anyway.
Avatar n tn A zinc deficiency can cause white or light yellow spots on the fingernails.
Avatar f tn Hair fall, split nails and sore tongue can be due to iron deficiency anemia, pernicious anemia and other B-vitamin deficiencies. Hence taking only folinic acid will not help. You must get your blood tested for iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency. Depending on the test results you have to start appropriate supplements. You can discuss with your treating doctor. Take care!
Avatar f tn By waves do you mean horizontal indentations? I'm not sure if I'm right about this, but it might be iron deficiency(again, I'm not sure). Type in your symptoms on the internet and see what it says - and of course, see a doctor and see what he thinks. Maybe he'll run some bloodwork for you. Good luck finding answers.
Avatar f tn Lots of rule-outs here, but they include–Adrenal gland problems, calcium deficiency, chronic fatigue, chronic inflammation, iron deficiency, poor digestion/absorption in the small intestine, Vitamin A deficiency, yeast and other fungi. Red Bands: Allergies, liver overload, inflammation of the gastro-intestinal tract.
Avatar f tn Did you bang your finger nail recently? Usually with a nutrient deficiency a number of nails would be distorted. At 12 years old, you need to eat 2200-2000 calories per day and have a variety of food that includes starches, meats, fruit and vegetables. The fresher the fruits and vegetables, the better nutritional value. If your mother is concerned, suggest going to your MD and getting your blood tested. It will indicate if any nutrient, vitamin or mineral is deficient or not.
537799 tn?1222116971 Symptoms of Anemia Symptoms of more severe anemia include rapid heartbeat, dizziness, headache, ringing in the ears, irritability, pale skin, restless leg syndrome, and confusion. A vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency may even cause your mouth and tongue to swell. These symptoms may sound scary, but the most common forms of anemia are easily treated, especially if caught early.
Avatar n tn I had a pretty significant vitamin B deficiency causing megaloblastic anemia and required shots weekly for several months...Also, I have had problems with highs and lows of calcium, iron, and magnesium...I had a hair analysis done which revealed no heavy metal toxicities, but a deficiency in molybnium (? sp), copper, and nickle...and of course, low ferritin (showed in blood tests too)...My doc believes I have a borderline malabsorption problem and a low intrinsic factor...Something inherited...
Avatar f tn Do you guys think all this is because my thyroid, my iron deficiency, pregnancy?? Will my body go back to normal after I have my baby? Give me your insights because my doctor thinks this is a total joke. Thank you!
Avatar n tn Cracked lips, Muscle pain, brittle fingernails, etc)(read links below). So I've concluded that she is Iron-Deficient. Now, I’ll have to somehow convince or force her to eat good food (rich in iron foods) along with her iron-drops. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that I've nailed the problem. This is only day 2 for my daughter. I hope this is the culprit of the pain and an end for many little sufferers.
Avatar f tn Yes I use to be anemic and my iron comes back low. Try taking an extra iron supplement and eat more meats, greens, beans.
Avatar f tn In this situation it is also expected that the absolute serum iron will be low. Normally in iron deficiency, iron is low, TIBC is high, percent saturation is low and ferritin is low. The iron can be low due to poor diet or due to inability of gut to absorb iron as seen in malabsorption syndromes, IBS etc. Iron supplements help but cause of deficiency needs to be found out. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral to a hematologist. Take care!
Avatar n tn If you are in grade 11 and studying in school, really your parents should be taking care of you and your diet! For your iron deficiency you need to eat plenty of dark green vegetables. The best thing for it is liver (lambsfry), although it is an acquired taste and many people don't like it. Anaemia - iron deficiency - can definitely cause lethargy, a pale complexion etc. I think the problem may go deeper than just diet and I think you should see a doctor.
Avatar n tn You need to supplement immediately. The iron count is probably your ferritin levels which is your iron storage. Your haemoglobin is normal because that's what's circulating in your blood because it's taken from your stores. Your count is very low. It depends on what lab did your test but the last one I had here gave normal levels as between 30-200 (not sure of the units). Mine were 35 but although they looked normal I felt ****.
Avatar n tn If you can't stand to take iron, eat iron-rich foods. But if you don't mind your iron supplements, begin to take them now. You will need the iron when you are breast-feeding, and you can use it now also.
Avatar f tn Some people also just have certain medical problems that can cause a problem absorbing iron. And as I said, most iron supplements are not made in a form that is well-absorbed. I would say that if this continues and you're not getting any answers from your child's doctor, it might be time to see a different doctor for another opinion.
