1356637 tn?1277263982 In onychomycosis(nail fungal infection) nail plate can have a thickened, yellow, or black appearance. The nails can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. Topical and oral antifungals are needed which are available under prescription. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist and get a KOH examination of the nail and skin specimen done to confirm the diagnosis.

Now what has caused this yelow-brown discoloration? Is it like an effect of the infection?Should i see a doctor? Will my nail fall?
Avatar n tn Hi all, Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. I am a professional guitar player with growing concerns over the health of my fingernails. Over the past 5 years, I have practiced guitar daily on average of 3-4 hrs a day, with 1 hr a day minimum on "off" days. Since the start, I've noticed that the nail bed (and subsequently the overall length of the nail) of my ring finger on the left (guitar fretting) hand has gradually shortened.
Avatar m tn If fungal infection is present , the nail may detach from the nail bed which is not true in your case. So give this quite some time. Do not forcibly manipulate the nail to avoid injuring the area.
Avatar m tn Any trauma to the nail bed can also lead to dents. Heredity conditions are other conditions leading to dents. Alopecia areata, eczema and reactive arthritis are few other conditions which may cause the appearance of dents in nails. For exact cause seeking the opinion of a dermatologist will be helpful. Best wishes and regards!
Avatar f tn I don't wish to be argumentative but...... True fungal infections (onychomycosis) affects the nail bed and the underside of the nail plate. It's the sort that is commonly seen on big toes causing thickened yellowed growth, it can of course affect the fingernails too and is generally caused by injury to the proximal and lateral nail folds or the eponychium. Some types of onychomycosis affects the whole nail plate.
745313 tn?1323142298 I knew about the thinning hair, which I am experiencing to a much, MUCH worse degree than I expected (but hey, it's summer!! ) But I have never read anything about tx affecting your fingernails. It only makes sense, as they are both made of the same thing - but has anyone else had this problem? Mine are awful! They are like paper, thin, peeling, and constantly ripping, even though they are cut completely short.
Avatar f tn Now, she has the same problem happening to her left thumb. There is a large circular area at the base of her thumb nail that is void of nail. She went to the doctor yesterday and they said they have no idea why it did that. She is healthy, but was a premature baby (32 weeks). She is also a nail biter. The doctor referred us to see a dermatologist...but that isn't for another three weeks. The area without nail is not painful. Any thoughts?
Avatar f tn Brittle nails can also peel, I believe there was a question below in regards to this. As far as I know, nutritional deficiencies rather show as uneven surfaces of the nail bed.
Avatar n tn Now that all of his nails have completely fallen off, the nail bed is puffy, dry and when the nail trys to grow back, it splits off the bed because of the puffiness. He's gone and recieved a biopsy, it came back NOT a fungus. He has also recieved an STD test and that came back negitive as well. He does not drink much anymore and is not prescribed pain medication anymore either, but he suffered from a dependency from both and still no change.
Avatar f tn Vegetables are very important! Especially dark green leafy vegetables and broccoli. If you're not eating your vegetables, you likely have a nutritional deficiency. It's good you're addressing it now, though, because as you age, this becomes more and more important. You're about to enter puberty, so these vegetables are even more important when you start menstruating.
Avatar n tn My fingernails are coming away from the skin just slightly down from the whites and I wonder if I've over-manicured or could it be a fungal growth? I now have to scrub my nails at least once a day as there is always a line of dirt regardless of how I've used my hands. I've tried soaking them in warm soapy water but this has absolutely no effect, the line of dirt appearing to be steadfast. If I leave them the dirt just mounts up, which not only looks disgusting but feels it also.
Avatar f tn So my nail edges look yellow. I've heard that yellow nails can be indicative of health problems. I also have yellow toenails but I went to the dermatologist and she said I had a toenail fungus. I was prescribed terbinafine for my toenails and have been on it for a week. But she didn't really check my finger nails. My nails have been like that for a while though.
Avatar n tn I have a 21 month old boy that suddenly started having his nailbeds look as though they were lifting from the bases...mostly on his fingernails, some on toenails....Thank God, my son has never been sick (common colds, etc). I have taken him to a very reputable dermatologist in our area . He says "probably fungal, probably self limiting. As long as child is healthy otherwise and no other lesions on body, would 'just observe'.
Avatar m tn About 6 months ago I noticed that 1 of my fingernails started to yellow in the corners at the distal part of my nail, at the site of yellowing the nail also got hardened. With time, the same happened in some of my other fingernails ( but stayed well demarcated at the corners. Also, both my toenails show a slow regression in the line where the nail is attached to the nail bed. Lastly, about a month ago the ring fingers in both my hands show fine pitting, 5-6 pits per nail, needle head size.
Avatar m tn The skin on my hands is pulling away from my fingernails and no matter how much lotion I put on them, they look and feel so dry that when I straighten my fingers, I can feel the skin pulling on my index finger. It occurred to me yesterday that with the obvious swellings on my finger joints, the skin probably IS too tight! I'm 56, in good shape, athletic, but do have chronic Hepatitis C, which is where I usually post.
Avatar f tn The nails can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. Topical and oral antifungals are needed which are available under prescription. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist and get a KOH examination of the nail and skin specimen done to confirm the diagnosis. Also nail fungal infection may take a bit longer to go away. So it is important to use the topical and oral anrifungals as and when prescribed by a dermatologist.
Avatar f tn This is so frustrating! I can't grow my fingernails out at all, because when I do, parts of my fingernails 'droop' over the tip of my fingers. It's not the entire nail -not like a club nail- it's just parts of the nail. Parts of the nail are straight while other parts of the same nail 'droop.' The mail becomes 'wavy.' Almost as if parts of the nail are stronger than the rest of the nail. All of my fingernails are like this.
Avatar m tn Onychomycosis or tinea unguium is a fungal infection of the nail bed, matrix or plate. Toenails are affected more often than fingernails and occurs primarily in adults, most commonly after 60 years of age. Treatment for a fungal nail infection includes using medications, taking steps to prevent the infection from returning, and removing the affected nail. However, treatment does not work for 20% to 25% of people with the condition.
370143 tn?1206679669 i barely have to use my inhaler, but recently my chest has been hurting, i have been getting bad headaches almost everyday and they dont go away even with headache medication like advil, my fingernails are turning blueish purple at the bases going about half way up the nail. even little activities like making a bed and walking a few blocks winds me and im always tired.
Avatar n tn The nail is all orange except for the cuticle. Other fingers on the same hand are now getting a hint of orange. Is there a home remedy for this or do I need to see an MD.?
1674823 tn?1307263620 I have been noted to have domed fingernails but not apparently 'clubbed' They have been like this as long as I can remember What might cause domed nails but not clubbed. ???
681148 tn?1437661591 I noticed that my right thumb nail had a white spot near the middle of the nail bed on the left side. The nail has since grown out some, so the white spot will probably be gone by the time I see my PCP. My other thumb nail has a groove or pit that is like looking at a ditch on the nail bed. One part before it dips into the ditch seems thicker. The other part seems much thinner. The groove or ditch is pronounced. Both of these things on my thumb nails is new for me.
