Common Questions and Answers about Fingernail ridges nail abnormalities

nail

Avatar n tn I have an 8 yr old daughter who has two fingernails, one on each hand, that are not smooth, they are slightly bumby and the nail that grows out at the end is not uniform, curvy. They do not have complete horizontal ridges across them. Sort of like moguls on a ski slope. They are not discolored and it only occurs in those two fingernails. She has had this for close to a year. She's rarely sick and if it was nail fungus I would think it would have spread to her other nails.
Avatar n tn my post was about nail ridges, i just was making a point that i injure myself daily and dont remember so im not sure if i injured my nail and caused the ridges or if its something else.
Avatar n tn Ever since I can remember, on my thumbnail and big-toe nail, there has been a strange deterioration. It looks like a series of grooves in the center of the nail (see attached pictures). My fingernails aren't weak or brittle and they're not really falling off or anything. I don't think it's anything serious, but I've always been curious what it is. If anybody could help at all, that would be great.
Avatar m tn no no ,, my nails kinda look normal but thier is about 15 or so ridges they are like groves and its not a fungus , acctually I got a fungus several years ago and this thing killed it , it took a year to do it and the nail had a horizontal line as the fungus grew off,, and i've seen the pitcher in a magizine of what I have ,, and the drops were just 19.
Avatar n tn Hi again, just wanted to tell you that I have an excellent bookmark re nail abnormalities and color etc. that really points to more serious systemic disease and underlying conditions such as heart, liver, etc. If you are interested I can give it to you...nails are an excellent way for dr to tell if there are problems internally that signal further investigation. Nothing to take lightly...
691935 tn?1421027090 I too had it for the last few years. I keep them short now. Just worked on that janky toenail I've had too. Sandal ready. Uhm, kinda. Mine have ridges too. Another thing I kept asking dr about for years. So- does it get better post tx? My iron is a love hate thing. I had to drop it for tx, but try n get it in my diet. I DID find an iron free multiple vit. That way I can kind of control the dose n not overload liver. My.. Chatty me tonight.
Avatar f tn and get tot he bottom of your nail abnormalities...there are many systemic diseases related to nail malformations, ridges, change of color, splitting, peeling...and many are indicative of more serious underlying systemic issues. Including the heart. I have an excellent bookmark regarding this if you like...

Avatar f tn what's up with deep vertical nail ridges? and what are they a sign of? is it parathyroidism too? I have low vit d3 levels and low thyroid. I am now being tested for parathyroid but only after insisting on it because this is the second time in the past year my vit d level dropped under 15. The bone pain in awful. This time around I have it in my right leg and thumbs, last time pain was across my upper back and thumbs as well as other bone locations on the body. Silly isn't it?
Avatar f tn It is an abnormal shape of the fingernail. The nail has raised ridges and is thin and curved inward. This disorder is associated with iron deficiency anemia. The other possibility which can present with nail pitting as well thick, white, silvery, or red patches of skin is psoriasis. It is thought that psoriasis occurs when the immune system overreacts, causing inflammation and flaking of skin. My sincere advice is to consult a dermatologist and get these two possibilities probed.
Avatar m tn ve had this happen to me more than once) Any serious crunching to the nail on your finger will cause this to happen - the bruising underneath the nail is what causes it to fall off, and the bump in the middle of where the nail used to be is actually the new fingernail growing back.
Avatar f tn I read this is nothing to worry about, I have them too. You can google Nail Problems & they will show you pictures of different nail problems. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn They are the same color as nails, not very deep but definitely noticable. These ridges are especially noticable on the bed of my thumbs and also on the toenails of the big toes. Other fingernails/toenails don't seem to have ridges, maybe just a few small ridges on index finger nails.
1833444 tn?1325557062 No fungus just nails are dark and rough like ripples on the nail not smooth like a nail should be just hope it not another something to go with everything else ;-)
Avatar f tn This article worries me as I do not see how this is different to someone having a possible cut on their hand or around their fingernail and then shaking hands and freakishly having the misfortune to cut you with their nail http://www.medhelp.org/posts/HIV---Prevention/HIV-and-Friend/show/255407 I am sure a reassurance with explanation would reassure many other worried people as well as me.
Avatar n tn This sounds like a fungal infection. You have mentioned the occurrence of ridges on the nails. Ridges on the nails may suggest underlying disorders like a fungal infection, anemia and dehydration. In fungal infections however, the nails may become whitish ,yellowish and soft. They will eventually separate from the nail bed. Continue to observe the condition. Have you sought consult with the pediatrician? I suggest that you seek consult with his pediatrician for evaluation also.
Avatar f tn Why is my fingernail on my middle finger starting to pull away from my skin and turn white and the bottom half is pitting and peeling? What could this be?
Avatar n tn Your lymphadenopathy and fingernail changes are non-specific. The nail findings of HIV you mention are quite uncommon. You really need to worry. If you have a specific question that I missed, please ask it again.
Avatar m tn Hello, Such kind of nail thickening and color change can be due to trauma or nail fungal infection also. Nail fungus also known as Onychomycosis is very common but hard to treat because of the location of the fungus that happens to be under the nails. There are different ways to treat this infection, but recent studies suggest that using both topical and oral anti fungal medications at same time yields better result.
Avatar n tn About two months ago my fingernail developed a black mark near the nailbed. It has since continued up toward the top of the nail while changing brownish now puple with the uppermost tip is turning white. I have an appointment in October. It doesn't hurt and does not appear to look fungal according to my doctor. Is October to long to wait? I read that melanoma can develop under the nail.
Avatar n tn Unfortunately, once the nail turns black it will be lost and the nail will have to regrow. The drill is, if a fingernail or toenail is bruised, to permit the blood to drain immediately. This is a painless, but somewhat squeamish procedure. Take a long-nosed needle nose pliers and heat a safety pin in a flame. Then burn a tiny hole in the part of the nail directly above the bruised part. Stop when blood oozes out. This will be painless. There are no pain sensors in the fingernail or toenail.
Avatar n tn Hi all, Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. I am a professional guitar player with growing concerns over the health of my fingernails. Over the past 5 years, I have practiced guitar daily on average of 3-4 hrs a day, with 1 hr a day minimum on "off" days. Since the start, I've noticed that the nail bed (and subsequently the overall length of the nail) of my ring finger on the left (guitar fretting) hand has gradually shortened.
Avatar m tn somedays ago i met a fight with some of the boys of the college nd after that fight one of the boys blood came under the skin of the finger nail......i dont know how.....nd that blood was visible till the end the finger nail had grown enough to cut it down.........i want ask whether this could be a hiv transmission if the boy was hiv positive......
Avatar f tn i ve read before those ridges are related to thyroid disease which u already have
