Common Questions and Answers about Fingernail problems paronychia

Avatar n tn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paronychia A paronychia presents with tenderness and may be due to a fungal infection or a bacterial infection. Prior to the nail problem, have you injured that part of the nail? In your case, you have mentioned tenderness over the base of your nail. This may be the case. An associated onychomycosis or fungal infection of the nail itself may be present causing the nail to dissociate from the nail bed. I suggest that you have this assessed by your dermatologist.
Avatar m tn From the history that you have provided it looks like paronychia of the nail which progressed to infection of the fingertip. Paronychia is a soft tissue infection around a fingernail that begins as cellulitis but that may progress to a definite abscess. It is of two types: acute caused by bacterial infection and chronic caused by fungal infection.
1476361 tn?1327419908 If this is not a bone spur than the other possibility could be paronychia which is an infection that develops along the edge of the fingernail or toenail. The paronychia is first tried to control with the help of antibiotics if there is infection along with inflammation. Nail removal can help in such cases. If the podiatrist recommended nail removal then there is nothing to worry about as this is a simple procedure if done carefully with local anaesthetics and the nail will grow back quickly.
Avatar m tn About 10 days later I got a pimple or blister on the base of my fingernail. I popped it thinking it was a pimple but not I got another one on the same finger. It does look similiar to pictures of Herpes Whitlow except its only one blister not several and I have no pain, no tingling or no itching. Is it possible that I contracted Herpes Whitlow but not any oral herpes since I have not had any symptoms on my mouth?
Avatar f tn Okay...everything i read says to take acetomenophin and put in water. Umm..the blister won't stop growing and it keeps getting bigger and more painful and I think water is making it worse. It's by my fingernail and parts of my finger that wasn't burned is starting to swell...and the pain is shooting down the entire finger....I took acetomeniphen with codeine recently and stopped dipping it in water. the blister feels extremely hot...
Avatar m tn It was the worst i have ever got,pus was coming out ,all the tissue was red and inflammed and it hurt like hell.Even if i touched my fingernail at the end(i have long fingernails) my finger was sensitive.So..today i noticed,i havent looked at my nail closely lately nor at a natural light , i saw that my nail suffered some yellow discoloration as if there was something underneath it.It is near the location where the pus was oozing and it looks like the nail is detaching from the nail bed.
Avatar n tn I have chronic paronychia or chronic eczema on my two thumbs. There is no pain and itch but skin under the nail and around the finger peels off. When soaking the thumb into the water, the skin turns to white. It has been for two years. In the past I soaked my hand into the dishwashing liquid without a glove. Then I noticed the skin was very dry and flaky as well as after the shower. I have got two diagnoses, the chronic paronychia and chronic eczema.
Avatar m tn There was not, but this post-wash picking led to a infected fingernail (paronychia) on the side where I had been picking. Within 5 days, I saw a doctor, and was given a week of antibiotics that healed it. Since late Saturday, I have had a rather persistent "pressure" headache somewhat behind my eyes. I had what I assume was an undercooked seafood meal on Friday, and my lower intestines still fell "bad".
Avatar m tn Hello, From your symptom paronychia should be ruled out. Paronychia results from a breakdown of the protective barrier between the nail and the nail fold. Treatment includes warm water soaks of the affected finger 3-4 times per day, oral antibiotics, topical antifungals and surgical intervention in more severe cases. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist. Since it has not responded well to antifungals, so surgical intervention may be needed.

Avatar f tn My boyfriend got paronychia on his finger and monday he went to the dr and he was given keflex and creme to put on his finger and today he fingered me and he forgot he had that on his finger. do i need to be worried?
Avatar f tn I had a 'non pus' paronychia after picking at a hang nail. I noticed it right as it started so went right to the doctor. It was a pink bump with no pain and wasn't warm to the touch. My primary put me on Keflex 500 mg 3 x's a day for 7 days. The bump went way down and the color went to normal within about 3 days but a bump can still be felt below the area of where the cuticle meets the finger (nailbed?). Is it normal for the bump to take a while to go away?
Avatar f tn My GP said I have a paronychia. My finger has been sore now for 10+ weeks. I have been on two weeks of antibiotics (Flucoxacillin), have applied magnesium sulphate and have now been given crystacide (anti-fungal) to try. With the hydrogen peroxide my finger seems to have gotten worse. Should I continue with the anti-fungal cream? And what is likely to be the next step? My GP said he would ultrasound it. Is that feasible given there doesn't appear to be anything in it?
Avatar f tn I feel it on and underneath the nail and even through my toe. I also feel a bit of a burning sensation under my nail. Despite of these problems my toe nail does look a bit better. My Doctor said to me that the infection is mild, it's not noticeable unless if you look very closely. I read the instructions and I remember that one rare side affect that the nail might come off..
Avatar n tn Hi there - my son is 5 weeks old and since day 3, he's had a problem with his nails. It started on 1 thumb, where the side of the nail got red & swollen (a paronychia, I'm guessing from my research...), and that was followed by the skin on the tip of this thumb peeling. It almost looked like a bit of while glue had dried on his thumb.
Avatar m tn Hello, I cannot confirm anything without examination but apin at the base of nail can be due to paronychia. It results from a breakdown of the protective barrier between the nail and the nail fold. Diagnosed by gram staining and KOH wet mounts from the skin and nail scrapings. Treatment includes warm water soaks of the affected finger 3-4 times per day, oral antibiotics, topical antifungals and surgical intervention in more severe cases. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist.
Avatar m tn I have severe irritation in and under my belly button. Iside is a cut that I admittedly think I caused with my fingernail, but I've done that before and it's gone away on its own. This has been with me for at least 10 days now and theirs a growth that's formed directly below my b.b. The growth isn't a zit, I can feel it's mass underneath the skin. It's small but irritated badly. Hurts if I touch it. ---Please tell me what this sounds like to you.
Avatar m tn Hello, For loss of cuticles from the nails, fungal infection and bacterial infections of the nails which may cause paronychia should be ruled out. Paronychia results from a breakdown of the protective barrier between the nail and the nail fold. It is diagnosed by gram staining and KOH wet mounts from the skin and nail scrapings. So I suggest you to get the gram staining and KOH wet mounts done from a dermatologist.
Avatar m tn Hello, Three possibilities are coming to my mind from your symptoms. These include paronychia or nail infection, peripheral vascular disease, exaggeration of Raynaud;s disease. Paronychia results from a breakdown of the protective barrier between the nail and the nail fold. Diagnosed by gram staining and KOH wet mounts from the skin and nail scrapings. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist and get these three conditions evaluated.
Avatar f tn I have no heart problems, no ashma or lung problems. I have asked all my doctors but nobody can tell me why this is happening or what can be done about it. What next?
1833444 tn?1325557062 Agreeing with Advocate1955, be sure to discuss this with your doctor. There's a condition called 'Terry's Nails' that is sometimes associated with advanced liver disease: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry's_nails It doesn't really sound as though this is what you're describing, but you should let them know regardless.
Avatar f tn Is fingernails determine who the father is?
Avatar f tn Why is my fingernail on my middle finger starting to pull away from my skin and turn white and the bottom half is pitting and peeling? What could this be?
Avatar n tn Herpes is not transmitted all that easily, despite your mom's doctor's advice. The virus is not transmitted through indirect contact, like doorknobs or contact with the dog you both have petted. It is only transmitted by direct contact. The doctor's advice to keep it covered with a bandage until it heals, is wise -- but direct contact still is required for transmission.
