Common Questions and Answers about Fingernail problems in the elderly

Avatar n tn This is not really a GI problem, and probably should be posted in the dermatology forum. In any case, I would have a skin specialist look at the nails. Obtaining sample nail clippings and sending it off for a fungal culture can confirm the diagnosis of an infection. If present, then appropriate anti-fungal medications should be started.
Avatar f tn You can apply some calamine lotion at the rash as it will help in soothing the skin. For mild-moderate symptoms a weak steroid may be used but use it under prescription. Use good quality moisturizers to prevent moisture loss from the skin. During the day, hydrate and protect hands with a protective and moisturizing cream. At night, repair them with creams formulated from glycolic acid. Also avoid direct contact with detergents and soaps.
Avatar m tn At the top of the fingernail, where it grows out fron the finger, is a small semi-circle of white then the rest of the finger nail is pinkish. Prior to moving to where I now live my nails all had this little area now 3 years later only my thumbs do. Can anyone tell me if this is something to be concerned about? Thanks for any help!!
Avatar f tn He offered help me to sweep the floor/yard. Hanging and picking up the clothes. He also concentrated on the weather make sure he picked up the clothes before it rained. He'll miss if he slept all the day long! LOL. He liked sleep (usually longer hour than us). He said to me, when getting old all the bones shrink, so can feel the body aching. Avatar m tn t go now his body will force him to go eventually and it may be too late. By nipping things in the bud we can prevent any serious problems in the future. You should also get him on probiotics either a supplement or yogurt enriched with it. We are more apt to develop polyps after the age of 50 and that's why they suggest we start having colonoscopies at age 50.
Avatar m tn I have severe irritation in and under my belly button. Iside is a cut that I admittedly think I caused with my fingernail, but I've done that before and it's gone away on its own. This has been with me for at least 10 days now and theirs a growth that's formed directly below my b.b. The growth isn't a zit, I can feel it's mass underneath the skin. It's small but irritated badly. Hurts if I touch it. ---Please tell me what this sounds like to you.
Avatar m tn Now the fingernail has a small hole in it and the nail felt soft. He is physically fine and there is no pain in the indicated finger. Please advise.
Avatar n tn My fingertips on my right hand have severe pain. It started in my pointer finger. I thought it might be ingrown fingernail so I used fingernail clippers to get it out(with no success of seeing signs of ingrown fingernail).. well each day i woke up it was in a different fingertip. This lasted about a week and went away. It came back a few weeks ago but much worse. All my fingertips are sore, but the severity of it moves every couple days to a new finger.
Avatar n tn ve had a digital mucous cyst on my right index finger (which was removed surgically but is back almost as big). Both of these fingers have large bumps or swellings on them at the joint closest to the fingernail. The left one that's been hurting so much seems to be very slightly redder than usual and a tiny bit swollen, but nothing else really looks abnormal. It's getting harder to use the left index finger for much of anything (including typing) without increasing the pain.
Avatar f tn The etiology seems to be ischemia - that is a lack of circulating oxygen over a long period of time. But there may, in fact be other causes. The next time you have a physical suggest an arterial blood gas, which would be definitive.
495284 tn?1333894042 If worse comes to worse, do they sell puppy pads for the floor as they do in Britain? I am house training Lady at the moment but have decided to go it alone without them, might help for an older dog though.
Avatar f tn I noticed that photographs of my husband when he was a baby were very similar in appearance to photographs of my son when he was a baby, but it was harder to see the resemblance in person than in the photographs. And judging by appearance is not a sure way to know anything unless the two possible fathers look extremely different than another. Have you arranged for a DNA test yet?

Avatar n tn What were the results of the laboratory tests done? A complete blood count would help in identifying problems in the blood such as anemia. The symptom of most types of anemia may include: weakness, pale skin, fast or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, or headache. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar f tn My infant poked me in the eye a few hours ago. Its a little red and almost feels as if I have an eyelash or something in it. No blurred vision just gets watery and very irritated feeling...
Avatar f tn Why is my fingernail on my middle finger starting to pull away from my skin and turn white and the bottom half is pitting and peeling? What could this be?
1681684 tn?1305029336 welcome.......PAIN is the common symptom of hiding in tight spaces.....Behind a bathroom stool, under a table, inside a closet, corner of a room, etc. Since you added that your dog is Elderly, this symptom is very common! It may just be Canine Arthritis, back or leg joint pain, etc....Either way, she needs to be evaluated by a Vet & prescribed Pain Management medication, to keep her comfortable.....
Avatar n tn Go with lots and lots of fiber, at least the minimun daily requirement and this should help unless she is developing IBS. Try this and if it doesn't work have her see a GI dr.
Avatar m tn s constant, if it comes on randomly (for no known reason), if you are elderly, or if you have a history of heart problems, you need to see a doctor. If it's scaring you, or if it just doesn't seem normal, I'd suggest getting your doctor involved.
Avatar m tn If the nail is black, you will lose it. The best drill is to make a hole in the fingernail immediately after the injury. This is best done by heating a needle and touching it to the nail until blood comes out. Sounds yucky and painful but it is actually painless. There are no pain sensors in the nail and you stop when you hit blood, which is under pressure and immediately comes out. The drill is NO HEAT for 24-48 hours, then warmth. Heat causes swelling, which is the last thing you want to do.
