Avatar m tn Hello, Such kind of nail thickening and color change can be due to trauma or nail fungal infection also. Nail fungus also known as Onychomycosis is very common but hard to treat because of the location of the fungus that happens to be under the nails. There are different ways to treat this infection, but recent studies suggest that using both topical and oral anti fungal medications at same time yields better result.

Avatar m tn He prescribed a urea nail stick to aid with the fungus like matter under the fingernail. I keep it trimmed back to allow for new nail growth, but it gets to a certain point and develops this gross looking end to it. Any idea why it's taking so long for the nail to regenerate, or is this an indication of a possible underlying cause?
Avatar m tn What do the lines look like and are they colored? If you have fingernail fungus the topicals don't work. You would have to take a prescription oral drug (Lamisil) for three months then it kills the nail. I just went through this with my toe nail. The nail is usually yellowish.
Avatar n tn Injury to nail due to trauma it self can cause the features described. With out a fungus test, woods lamp done, not safe to give internal antifungals.
Avatar n tn I was okay trying to control(possibly) the fungus on my toes and my thumb and index fingernails. Now it needs like what my wife is having(black dot on her thumb) now resembles what I had once upon a time. I don't want her to fight with fungus. I did see a dermatolgist yesterday and she said my toes are likely fungus-related but she had I didn't have enough nail for samples. Prescribed me Penlac(sp?) and asked me to go back when the toenails grow out... I am so confused now.

Avatar f tn Nothing wrong, except those nasty foot tubs with jets. Fungus paradise. I'm a nail technician here in Atlanta. There has been no proven facts that acrylic fumes harms fetuses, however I wouldn't do it daily. Once a week is just fine.
Avatar m tn About 10 years ago I went to the nail salon and added nail tips to my fingernails. A week later I went back to remove them. Soon after removing the nail tips, I started noticing my nails on my thumbs started to change colors. I went to the dermatologist and they prescribed Penlac to treat the nail fungus. After using Penlac for a while I noticed that it was not working for me. After that, I went back to the dermatologist and they did a culture and they said it was a fungus.
Avatar m tn A brown or black dot or streak under a toenail or fingernail could be a blood clot, fungus infection, or possibly a skin cancer. Hence get it examined under a dermatoscope from a dermatologist. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps.
Avatar m tn Yesterday I was at a nail salon and the woman was trimming my cuticles and she took a chunk out of one and it started to bleed. Before I sat down I asked if the utensils had been cleaned and she said yes. Her hands were in tact, she even let me look at them. I watched her take out the utensils from a lazor light thingy and she opened a sealed package. I do not think that the towel was clean underneath, but I did not see blood on it.
Avatar m tn ve had this happen to me more than once) Any serious crunching to the nail on your finger will cause this to happen - the bruising underneath the nail is what causes it to fall off, and the bump in the middle of where the nail used to be is actually the new fingernail growing back.
Avatar f tn This article worries me as I do not see how this is different to someone having a possible cut on their hand or around their fingernail and then shaking hands and freakishly having the misfortune to cut you with their nail http://www.medhelp.org/posts/HIV---Prevention/HIV-and-Friend/show/255407 I am sure a reassurance with explanation would reassure many other worried people as well as me.
Avatar f tn Why is my fingernail on my middle finger starting to pull away from my skin and turn white and the bottom half is pitting and peeling? What could this be?
Avatar f tn The doctor didn't mention fungus. How can you tell if it is that? I always thought a fungus would smell bad wouldn't it? The nail isn't raised, hasn't been damaged and doesn't smell. I don't know exactly when it appeared because I only noticed it when I removed my nail varnish, which wasn't chipped or damaged as I guess it would have been if it had been knocked. I am hoping I am just paranoid now....
Avatar f tn Find a salon &spa rather than a nail shop. All the acrylic and solutions used in a nail shop are too much for us. (And I did nails for a living up until my 4th month) A salon and spa is safer, cleaner, and they don't see as many nail clients so the fumes are almost non existent.
Avatar n tn About two months ago my fingernail developed a black mark near the nailbed. It has since continued up toward the top of the nail while changing brownish now puple with the uppermost tip is turning white. I have an appointment in October. It doesn't hurt and does not appear to look fungal according to my doctor. Is October to long to wait? I read that melanoma can develop under the nail.
Avatar n tn Unfortunately, once the nail turns black it will be lost and the nail will have to regrow. The drill is, if a fingernail or toenail is bruised, to permit the blood to drain immediately. This is a painless, but somewhat squeamish procedure. Take a long-nosed needle nose pliers and heat a safety pin in a flame. Then burn a tiny hole in the part of the nail directly above the bruised part. Stop when blood oozes out. This will be painless. There are no pain sensors in the fingernail or toenail.
