Avatar m tn Hello, Such kind of nail thickening and color change can be due to trauma or nail fungal infection also. Nail fungus also known as Onychomycosis is very common but hard to treat because of the location of the fungus that happens to be under the nails. There are different ways to treat this infection, but recent studies suggest that using both topical and oral anti fungal medications at same time yields better result.

Avatar m tn He prescribed a urea nail stick to aid with the fungus like matter under the fingernail. I keep it trimmed back to allow for new nail growth, but it gets to a certain point and develops this gross looking end to it. Any idea why it's taking so long for the nail to regenerate, or is this an indication of a possible underlying cause?
Avatar m tn What do the lines look like and are they colored? If you have fingernail fungus the topicals don't work. You would have to take a prescription oral drug (Lamisil) for three months then it kills the nail. I just went through this with my toe nail. The nail is usually yellowish.
Avatar n tn Injury to nail due to trauma it self can cause the features described. With out a fungus test, woods lamp done, not safe to give internal antifungals.
Avatar n tn I was okay trying to control(possibly) the fungus on my toes and my thumb and index fingernails. Now it needs like what my wife is having(black dot on her thumb) now resembles what I had once upon a time. I don't want her to fight with fungus. I did see a dermatolgist yesterday and she said my toes are likely fungus-related but she had I didn't have enough nail for samples. Prescribed me Penlac(sp?) and asked me to go back when the toenails grow out... I am so confused now.
1476361 tn?1327419908 The paronychia is first tried to control with the help of antibiotics if there is infection along with inflammation. Nail removal can help in such cases. If the podiatrist recommended nail removal then there is nothing to worry about as this is a simple procedure if done carefully with local anaesthetics and the nail will grow back quickly. The point to note here is that nail removal will not help in case of bony spur. Regards.
Avatar m tn A brown or black dot or streak under a toenail or fingernail could be a blood clot, fungus infection, or possibly a skin cancer. Hence get it examined under a dermatoscope from a dermatologist. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps.
569705 tn?1217017492 gave me pamphlets on hand eczema and the paper said that some eczema is associated with a fungus that also affects the soles of your feet. When I intially went to the dr my feet where already infected. The nails on my hands are also discolored and grow in what I can only describe has "ripples" and crumble off. I have been seeing this dr since January and am not happy with my progress.
Avatar m tn i thought maybe an ingrown nail but i dont see any nail part of the nail digging into the skin, it just looks normal again with the exception of the blister looking thing now. if anyone knows what this could be i would appreciate it because i need to avoid doctors unless its life threatening.
Avatar n tn In extreme cases, infection can move under the fingernail and need partial or complete nail removal. In your case there there does seem to be some cellulitis, involved and probably requires antibiotics. It is important to follow up with your doctor in 24-48 hours to be sure that the infection is healing properly. ref:http://www.emedicinehealth.com/paronychia_nail_infection/page7_em.
Avatar m tn Also consult a doctor because any hematoma which is covering more than 25 % of the area has to be evaluated by a doctor. If there is any nail removal then soak it with an antiseptic and apply some antibiotic cream like Neosporin or Bactroban. Surgical technique for draining the hematoma like cautery, needle drilling or removing the entire nail to release the blood may be required.
Avatar m tn IT IS NOW BLACK UNDERNEATH THE NAIL. IS THERE ANY TREATMEAT THAT I CAN DO TO MAYBE TAKE THE SORENESS OUT OF OF IT. I AM A PIANIST AND GUITARIST I HAVE TO PLAY THIS WEEK...AND IT IS THE TIP OF MY FINGER THANK YOU..
Avatar m tn ve had this happen to me more than once) Any serious crunching to the nail on your finger will cause this to happen - the bruising underneath the nail is what causes it to fall off, and the bump in the middle of where the nail used to be is actually the new fingernail growing back.
Avatar f tn This article worries me as I do not see how this is different to someone having a possible cut on their hand or around their fingernail and then shaking hands and freakishly having the misfortune to cut you with their nail http://www.medhelp.org/posts/HIV---Prevention/HIV-and-Friend/show/255407 I am sure a reassurance with explanation would reassure many other worried people as well as me.
Avatar f tn Why is my fingernail on my middle finger starting to pull away from my skin and turn white and the bottom half is pitting and peeling? What could this be?
Avatar f tn The doctor didn't mention fungus. How can you tell if it is that? I always thought a fungus would smell bad wouldn't it? The nail isn't raised, hasn't been damaged and doesn't smell. I don't know exactly when it appeared because I only noticed it when I removed my nail varnish, which wasn't chipped or damaged as I guess it would have been if it had been knocked. I am hoping I am just paranoid now....
Avatar n tn About two months ago my fingernail developed a black mark near the nailbed. It has since continued up toward the top of the nail while changing brownish now puple with the uppermost tip is turning white. I have an appointment in October. It doesn't hurt and does not appear to look fungal according to my doctor. Is October to long to wait? I read that melanoma can develop under the nail.
Avatar n tn Unfortunately, once the nail turns black it will be lost and the nail will have to regrow. The drill is, if a fingernail or toenail is bruised, to permit the blood to drain immediately. This is a painless, but somewhat squeamish procedure. Take a long-nosed needle nose pliers and heat a safety pin in a flame. Then burn a tiny hole in the part of the nail directly above the bruised part. Stop when blood oozes out. This will be painless. There are no pain sensors in the fingernail or toenail.
