Common Questions and Answers about Finger swelling injury

Avatar m tn I fell down and perhaps the whole body weight rested on my finger, as a result of which the finger got swelling and little bent after a day followed by severe pain. The finger does not get straightened. I was advised by pharmacist to take Brufen tablets and apply some gel. As long as the tablet was taken for 3-4 days, the pain was not there. But no sooner the tablet was stopped, the pain again started. I got X-Ray done of my finger and consulted an Orthopaedic Surgeon.
Avatar m tn Three months ago i cut my pinky & ring finger on a saw , surgery was completed & been going to physio for two months to get mobility in the fingers where they had to re-attache the tendons , that stretching is going well but the swelling on back of hand--palm of hand & fingers are giving me a problem , i've been working through that issue(soaking hand from hot &cold water)(wearing compression gloves)(wrapping the hand)(wearing a splint)(arm elevated) (massage) & now anoth
Avatar m tn The injury can lead to nerve damage and/or a local swelling involving the nerve. The localized swelling could be due to tendinitis or it could be a nerve tumor. The nature of the swelling has to be found out. If the lump involves the nerve, it should be carefully removed surgically. You will also need physical therapy for a fully functional index finger.
Avatar f tn If we think of swelling as being the cause for both problems, that is, swelling from injury or infection is tending to cut off both blood circulation and nerve impulses to that finger, then you need to get the swelling down. If infection is causing it, you've got to see a physician.
Avatar f tn It has been three months since the injury and the pain is still the same. It hurts when I hold my finger and move it side to side and up and down and also when pressure is applied. It also hurts between the knuckle and the beginniing part of my finger when pressure is applied. Also it hurts on my knuckle when pressure is applied. Should I get it looked again right away? Both my middle knuckle and the knuckle on my pointer finger still looks enlarged. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn For about a month now, my knuckle has been hurting pretty bad to bend it or even touch it. Today I noticed some swelling. Its my middle finger on my right hand and its swollen on the side closest to my pointer finger, its even a little red. As far as I can remember, I have never injuryed it. I use to be a package handler at FedEx Ground. I loaded the tractor trailer trucks but the last three months Iwas there, which ended last month, I was on light duty.
Avatar m tn Is it normal to have this swelling a month after the initial injury? How long shouldi let this be befor I insist on seeing a hand specialist? Thanks.
Avatar m tn I injured my right pinkie finger while working with a transmission for a clients car. I do this by trade and unfortunately don't have insurance. I was underneath it and had little room to pull out some bolts that were almost seized. I only had about 3 inches on my 12 inch ratchet to use on this stubborn bolt, with all my might and grease that would be present my hand slipped away from the ratchet and my inside pinky slammed against a bracket above my hand.
Avatar f tn material if you will. ive had many stiches and some were placed on my middle finger on the middle knuckle and there was a small peice of stuture left in there. now that part of my finger, on top, has a puss pocket that pops all the time and stings a bit but the worst part is that my finger looks jammed. It looks like there is a lot of swelling just in the middle joint but there is no bruising just slight redness. Non of my other fingers are like that.
Avatar n tn My right index finger has been swollen for a month now. the knuckle is painful to the touch, but i'm able to bend it. Any ideas what it could be?? Thanks for any help!
Avatar n tn Usually simple knuckle fractures are treated by using a splint and taping the injured finger with the adjoining finger. Surgery is required if there is alignment problem, angulation problem or displacement of the fracture ends. Please consult an orthopedic specialist. Take care!
Avatar f tn 5 wks ago, just sore on the inner knuckle, could not find any insect bites, no injury, no hang nail. Swelling went down after several days, then it came back with a vengence with severe swelling and lots of pain but this time only in the fingertip. The pressure was so intense that I tried to drain it, I know I shouldn't have. Nothing would come out. The pain was extreme and I did hot salt water soaks several times a day which was worse than any pain I have ever experienced!
Avatar n tn (taping to the adjacent finger, with one thin strip of tape above the knuckle and one below) will be useful for support and to encourage motion. In the the case of even a jammed finger, swelling may persist for some time.
Avatar m tn Hi, welcome to the forum, the pain and swelling in the finger can be due to pulp space infection or traumatic arthritis. If there is throbbing type of pain suggests pus formation. This may not be due to allergy. The plain radiograph will help to rule out pathology. Finger splint may be needed to give an absolute rest to the finger. Pain killers with anti-inflammatory activity will helps to reduce the inflammation and antibiotics to control infection, against prescription.
402205 tn?1230481005 Well toots...I would have to say that going to the doc's office would not be a bad idea...why not go? It's probably fine, but anytime swelling results from an injury like that I would recommend going to make sure everything's ok..No need to go tothe E.R. or anything...it's just that I can't examine it from here...sorry...and I would not tape it...not unless the doc has examined it and recommends that..just not now...
1308443 tn?1302693321 I started occupational therapy because my pinky finger won't straighten out. The middle joint is super swollen. It seems to be getting worse. My mom is not wanting to take me back because they seem to be guessing a lot. Nothing is for sure. They think I strained te ligaments on the sides of my pinky. They put me in a splint and sent me home. The pain is worse and so is the swelling. The bottom of my finger is straighter but the top is curving more. Has anyone else had this problem?
Avatar n tn Especially with the swelling, you could have a significant injury that your not even aware of. I would also worry about nerves. Pleas see the Doc. And the Anti-inflammatory is a great idea if you already haven't done so.
Avatar n tn My daugher got hit this past summer in the hand, in the area fatty between her thumb and pointer finger. It was swelled and very stiff. Our family Dr. said said it was just inflammed. Ever since that area gets sore and will swell up when she is hitting. I was told that there is a thumb brace guard that she could wear WHILE she is batting, to protect her thumb area. Where would I find something like this? I have checked online and can't find anything.
Avatar n tn I had a mishap at work in which my nail of my third finger was pulled out from under the cuticle area, but left attached to the nail bed. Emergency Doctor froze my finger, removed the nail surgically, stitched my fingertip back together, then reinserted the 'dead' nail (after thorough clean/disinfect) and stitched it in place to protect the nail bed and serve as a semi soft splint. I am on day 11 since my accident, and have been diligent in the care of my finger.
Avatar f tn There is no point in getting a second opinion. The xray would have showed a broken bone. Your finger would have been strapped up to the next finger to keep it straight and broken bones take about 6 weeks to mend. torn tendons take much longer. I damaged my fibrial posterial tendon (at the back of my leg) by using the treadmill at the gym. I couldn't use my let for 9 months because of the swelling and pain. As you are concerned, you should see your doctor to put your mind at ease.
