Finger swelling in cold weather

Common Questions and Answers about Finger swelling in cold weather

Does anyone have these issues more in cold weather? I have been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy. No one has been able to tell me what the underlying cause might be. I don't have diabetes though I have strong family history of both type 1 and 2. I did have a high A1c result (6.1) which my neurologist thought was high for someone without diabetes, but I did pass the Glucose Tolerance Test.
I developed swelling in my fingers in both hands this winter. It is perfectly symmetrical and located in the fatty tissue before my knuckle where my finger meets my hand. They are reddish plaque looking areas. The doctor referred to them as red, erythematous swelling (I included a picture for you to see). The first time I saw my general practitioner he dismissed it as water retention and told me to change my diet.
Not sure if this is the correct forum for this but here goes... I've recently started having heartburn a lot. I'm a 47 yo male and have only had heartburn a couple times previously in my life and never severe. When this first started happening I went to the ER because it was so sever one night that I thought I was having a heart attack. This was the first time I had gotten it in years. After a battery of heart tests nothing was found to be wrong with my heart-- Strong like bull!
But the symptoms may come from different sources and the relief may vary according to the individual particular physiology. I started getting random swelling when the weather got warm. I live in the NW in the Eugene Oregon area. So perhaps there is some spider/nat/bug that is really abundant this year. For myself I rule out pollen because I first got random swellings in May and then in July when the pollens are different. Another oddity: I know someone else who had the same symptoms.
I used to be fine swimming in cold weather, and going out in the cold until about a year ago. Now anytime I have the goose bumps, i start to get the hives. I havn't seen a doctor, because by the time i get an appointment, their gone. I've read up on cold urticaria and the hives usually appear on the face, hands, and neck. However, mine only appear on my upper legs, spread to my lower legs, and my hips. Anyone have any ideas on the best way to calm the itching fast?
I was messing around with my new garage key on my keychain and within 5 minutes i noticed 3 callused bumps on the side of my finger and on my middle finger of my next hand. They only hurt when i pressed on them, felt like dry hard skin. and itched every now and then. i kept applying creams and miracle oil onto it and within 24 hours they decreased in size. they never cause my pain, no redness, no swelling.
Hello, I'm a 46 yo male, first the ball of my left foot started to swell and itch like crazy, then the right side of my right foot started to itch and swell with end an hour of each other, the next day my top lip swelled up for 12 to 16 hours, took Benadryl when I went to bed, but the swelling was still there in the morning...
in my private life it´s also not that easy as i have to avoid going indoors during summer time. the paradox about my problem is that as i sufferred from cold weather in my home country, i moved to a hot southern one and suffer here even more ... :S i will really appreciate any suggestion that helps. thank you. i look forward to hearing from you.
My right leg is numb above my knee and surrounding thigh, hurts when it is lightly touched, and with the cold weather plus I get a stabbing pain as if I am being stabbed with a knife. It hurts when I am standing, sitting or lying down. Lately my lower back and pelvic area are sore as well. I have an appt with the neurologist at the end of this month. I was talking to friend who is also a gastro doctor and he thinks something is pressing on a nerve.
apart from the fact it looks at bit funny it hadnt caused me any problems until two weeks ago when i started to lose sensitivity in those finger tips. spoke to my dermatologist when i was in gettin my moles checked and he tried to tell me i had excema. not likely! any info would be very much appreciated.
cin- you know that's what I thought at first... but it seems unlikely. it came on all the sudden and i'm still pretty young.. its worse in warm weather (it's been 80 degrees down here the last few days, and muggy) i haven't gained any weight with this pregnancy yet. in fact I've lost 12 lbs (doc says not to worry about it since I'm overweight to start with and I'm eating healthy). i'm clueless, unless its a hormone thing... i don't know... it sure was easier being pregnant in my 20's LOL!!!!
But that's not the most alarming part of Tramadol in my case. In my case the antidepressant that they tacked on to the cocktail is the thing that causes all the rough psychological and mental symptoms. It's a Two Fer One! I've been feeling like I was going crazy for a long time. And in addition to that; the scary suicidal ideation. The suicidal ideation vanished and returns ONLY if I get a flare up of withdrawal symptoms. That happens if I get over stressed.
hi medicmommy, in case you really went ahead with treatment, i hope it went well so far, without big issues, and that it will lead to complete restoring of your health further down the road. I have a question about an interesting comment you made one week ago in a liver biopsy thread: "the swelling in my legs started a year ago, despite my biopsy being 1/1" Can you perhaps elaborate more on this? what do your doctors think what might cause the swelling, and how noticable is it?

Hello Everyone! Well done! Well Played! Welcome to a New Thread!
My hands are very cold for hours in the morning then by about 2pm they are fine. My finger looked horrible and has been sensitive. But it is actually looking alot better now at the end of day 2. I am so glad this happens to others too!!
I can now tell when an episode is coming so I automatically strip down get two washclothes wet with cold water grab the trash can to sit in front of me and get through the 20 minute ordeal that absolutely drains me. If anyone has figured it out please let me know. I would love to find a treatment.
Turns out that if boots are too narrow in the toe box it can slow or cut off circulation... this in combination with cold weather which restricts blood flow anyway was just the right combination to cause this. I went and bought a new set of size 12's with a wider toe box and this seemed to improve greatly almost immediatly. I was scared to death when i did any web searches because you come across Diabetes or MS among other things that cause toe numbness.... The internet is a scary place.
mine just started today and i am pretty sure this has not been the first time as i suffer with a multitude of different disorders the most irritating of them all is my fibromyalgia but i have to agree i'm not a relaxed person and i get high blood pressure too and i also smoke and live in cold cold minnesota and i have a cold so much for gods help, i had a pharmacist ask me the other day why am i trying different narcotic drugs and lecture me about it and when you walk into a pharmacy with a thro
I took the second round of medrol, but when I was half way through the six day treatment program I came down with a horrible cold in both the chest and sinuses. After getting over the cold it seemed that the medrol had not helped, so I'm back to square one. One interesting thing though, when I had the cold I used a parasite zapper to kill the incection in the sinuses and it helped the next day but the problem came back again.
Now whenever it flairs I massage the area and if I cannot access it any lumps , cold compress help reduce the swelling. I understand you are in so much pain everywhere, all the time, that you feel discouraged and helpless. I have gone from being so bad I was unable to move or even speak for hours at a time, even unable to shower myself, for a couple of years to being almost normal some of the time now.
I also experience these weird pains in my head that come for about a second and then go and come back again every 10minutes or so. These pains are in 1 area in the back of my head in about a 1 square inch area.. Any ideas???
The hair has not grown back fully (but has grown some), and now when I run my finger over it, it feels indented in the exact spot the hair is gone. I only have a indented line on my forehead going down to my eyebrows. This has been getting bigger over the last week. I have an appointment with my determologist again next week.
I believe I will try DoctorSams suggestion with the ice. But perhaps a cold compress. Where I'm from there is no such thing as cold water out of a faucet. In the interest of finding the common ground I will describe my scenarios and physical characteristics. I'm 38 about 20 lbs overweight. i do not workout but use to be in construction so i am still in pretty good shape. The extra pounds come from working behind a desk the last 2 years.
I am wondering why I feel a vibration in my left leg. When it first started I thought it was my cell phone ringing but my phone was not in my pocket. I feel the vibration all day long and it has a pattern to it. It is a weired feeling and I can not figure out what causes this and why it will not go away. Can you tell me why I feel this?
Most (all?) of you have seen the small clip-on-the-finger over a finger nail used in doctor offices to measure the Oxygen Saturation level in your blood (target 95% or better I believe). These doctors don't have a pulse display on their units or simply prefer the manual method to measure pulse rate, which both the nurse and doctor do, the doctor of course also listens to my heart with a stethoscope.
idiopathic cyclic edema that basically I have swelling in a pattern and they do not know why, it is a symptom that I have gotten use to so I given up on figuring out why or how to get rid of to tell you the truth. What is a Bravo? Hope your scope doesn't have to be rescheduled and that all goes well. Take care!
I've had eczema in my ears for 15 yrs. It is very cyclical, starting w/intense uncontrollable itching, then clear fluid leaking from skin, followed by crusting over & flaking of skin in ears that is itchy in & of itself, leading to more scratching & picking at ears. The skin in my ears gets very damaged and ratty during outbreaks. I also have swelling of the ear canal after these itch/scratch episodes that are sometimes quite painful, & Motrin helps that.
