I think Caryopteris has offered you good suggestions. This is probably due to the shape of your nail and or finger at the site of the in-growth.
The best place to begin is with your PCP. If he/she is unable to treat this or a referral may be necessary. You certainly don't have to tolerate this uncomfortable situation... there are solutions.

The soreness is over to the side in the soft part of the index finger between the first knuckle and the nail. It hurts if I type or if I press on it in anyway. It also throbs a little and feels hot. There is no detectable swelling or any sort of cyst of any type but the pain has become more bothersome over the last 24 hours. What could be causing this? Should I be worried? I wouldn't really be bothered except I am a guitarist and I don't want it to affect my playing.
My finger nail was crushed and halfway down the nail bed, the nail is torn and slightly poking into the cuticle. The nail is still attached to my skin at the top of the nail and in the bed at the bottom. This happened last night and my finger is slightly numb, swollen, and there is a lot of what looks like discharge (oily?). It’s been lightly bleeding. I can move my finger and curl it slightly with some pain. Do I need to go to urgent care or can this be taken care of at home?

To geminigirl1963 , the old nail already from 1 week dropped and now the new nail is only cover the half of the finger and it is like it will never grow as it show like my other nails , meaning i am afraid that the process is already finished without letting the new nail grow to full.
I have a very annoying callus or growth on my right hand ring finger just next to the nail bed it grows to form a hard and rough chunk of yellowish skin and eventually annoys me so much that I remove it either by biting or using nail scissors! When it's the rough skin it doesn't really cause me pain but when I remove a lot of it it it tends to feel rough but soft and starts to feel swollen and sore. It doesn't matter how many times I cut it away it just keeps growing back!
once in awhile there is hint of pain in whole area around lumps.. also seems finger nail is brittle,chippy just unhealthy nail. what does this sound like? first peasize bump is petruding from side of top joint of middle finger with second flatter bump just under nail bed. both lumps seem full of water but first peasized lump has gootten harder.
The index finger is burned on the area near the nail bed including the nail itself, the burn is isolated to the right side of the nail and finger. The nail has hurt and is swollen (from over a year ago) and now the whole finger is turning crooked to the left and turning down. I've had this pain under my middle finger nail for a couple years now and its excruciating....my doctor said soak it in warm water immediately after bumping it which helps take the pain away immensely. She said it is likely a raw nerve and regular soaking in warm water could help. I don't have time to sit and soak my finger often...wish there was a surgery for this. Now my finger is throbbing and in pain without even being bumped:-( at least I know its not just me now.
This area is only about 10 mm in diameter if that, it is near the proximal end of the nail bed a few millimeters below my nail and cuticle, on the side closest to the ring finger. There is no redness, swelling, or irritation in the area or on my cuticle, and I have never to my knowledge injured the area, nor do I remember having an infection there. The nail and and cuticle appear normal to me. The joint nearest the area does not hurt at all when bending.
After a week of no noticible improvement, a friend suggested the possibility of fungal nail infection, although my nail was clear and growing normally. I used Dr. G's Clear Nail Antimicrobial Solution as directed (7 days, twice daily). Agian, no luck. My finger was no longer just dry, but peeling and scaley. Becoming desperate I've even tried Lamisil's creme for athletes foot.

The symptoms are suggestive of fungal infection of the finger as well as nail. In onychomycosis(nail fungal infection) nail plate can have a thickened, yellow, or cloudy appearance. The nails can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. There is usually no pain or other bodily symptoms, unless the disease is severe. To prevent it wear gloves while working on people having fungal nail infections and do not share hand towels with them.

ve been taking a lot of anti-viral drugs, doxycycline, ultram and lyrica for EBV and CFS. A few days ago I noticed blood under my finger nail (thumb). This was not due to injury. Should I be concerned? I read this condition is a symptom of both liver and heart disease. I have an appt w/ my doctor tomorrow to discuss. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts / explainations?
My index finger has chronic pain when it is exposed to cold temps. or if my circulation is lessened in that arm. It's just that finger and only at the finger nail, cuticle area. The feeling is similar to getting it smashed into something. Also, when no pain is present, if I hit it ever so slightly on something, it might as well have been smashed in a door, the feeling would be the same!
ve noticed that the nail bed (and subsequently the overall length of the nail) of my ring finger on the left (guitar fretting) hand has gradually shortened. I believe that the trauma of fretting notes has introduced a stress point between the edge of the nail bed and the meat of the tip of my finger. This, in turn, is causing the nail to "uproot" from the nail bed. Currently, the nail bed on my left hand is approximately 2mm shorter than the nail bed on my right hand.
