Common Questions and Answers about Finger joint fusion surgery

Avatar f tn Patient’s who are not been treated successfully with conservative measures are ideal candidates for ankle fusion. Problems associated with ankle fusion surgery include non union, infection, wound healing problems, and arthritic changes in the foot joints, which can be prevented with proper care. Furthermore, patients who undergo ankle fusion surgery, may need to get their shoes modified for the rest of their life.
Avatar f tn I would suggest you to go for a second opinion and try to delay fusion and if possible go for a second surgery. If there is no scope for healing after a second opinion and recent scans then you are left with option for fusion as this will stabilize your foot. Continued chronic pain with instable joint can be best treated with fusion of the first, second and third tarso metatarsal joints in an anatomically correct position.
Avatar f tn If total wrist fusion and elbow joint replacement (same arm - dominant) have been recommended, which surgery would ideally come first?
Avatar m tn Well, wrist fusion or arthrodesis aims at limiting the movement at the diseased joint(s). One may not be able to move the wrist as freely as normal individuals, depending on the exact pathology and procedure, but this is the requirement for preventing further degeneration and pain in a majority of cases. Rarer complications include extensor tenosynovitis, intrinsic contracture, carpal tunnel syndrome, non-union, joint instability/ abutment etc. Hope this was useful. Take care!
Avatar n tn I can literally palpate at C-5 (and it is now noticeable a bump) that when pushed too hard causes pain to radiate down the backside of my right arm to my right pinky and ring finger. I had migraines before the surgery but they are much, much worse since the surgery. I have not been able to return to work. I am trying to figure out what is causing this.
Avatar f tn To understand how a retroflexed odontoid can affect CSF flow take ur left hand and the pointer finger and thumb and form a circle with the pointer into the base of the thumb..take the pointer of ur right finger and from the bottom insert into the circle and point toward u, only go as far as the first knuckle of the pointer on the right hand....now slowly turn that finger that it points way from u and watch the space around ur finger. The imagine u have a herniation in that space.....
1427094 tn?1283052419 if the joint is bad, get the fusion. if done correctly, patients do quite well. you can still walk, run, etc. however, you will not be able to wear high heels or go up on your toes well b/c it will be fused.
Avatar n tn Im a female 22 yrs old I just had an accident on march 14 2009 i had to get internal fixation a screw put in my sacroiliac joint. I want to know if i can get another surgery to take it out?
Avatar f tn If I have already had a fusion on three levels and I am only six months out from my surgery with more problems, what will my future hold? Has anyone else had to have surgery on additional levels so soon? Does this mean another fusion? What can I expect if I have to have another surgery? Is it more painful? Does it take longer to heal? I am just anxious. Any help would be great. Thank you.
Avatar n tn If surgery is only option leftr, consider artificial disc replacement in these two levels. Fusion is a great surgery, but hurts adjacent levels in 2-8 years after fusion. How old are you? male? Hang in there, and good luck.
Avatar n tn "facet disfunction and damage to the sacrilic joint on my left side"---- This is main cause of your constant back pain due to soft tissue injury around SI joint.and conductable pain around your pelvis area and lead to it twist. I probably disgree with your current doctor who believes that the fusion is creating pressure on my transistional vertebrae and its disc. Deep and intensive needs can help. Good luck!
Avatar f tn I have osteoarthritis in my foot, and I have to decide between an joint replacement or a fusion in my right great toe. I would like to know the pros and cons to both so I can make an informed decision.
479581 tn?1317757488 The 2nd toe (which had the hammertoe repair) is now out of alignment and is not attached properly at the base joint. (doc says it comes 30-40% out of the joint). The 2nd toe also has some bone degeneration. There are two surgical options being offered. The first is to fuse the big toe to create length and the second is to add an artificial bone graft to create length without fusing the joint. I'm a 52 year old female teacher. I'm not diabetic and my overall health is good.
Avatar n tn I am not certain if this is the correct term, but it somewhat explains the issue. After to surgerys 14 months apart, the first a C5-C7 fusion, the second a C3-C5 fusion, I still remain in neck, thorasic and arms pain. I am not saying the fusions didnt fuse, they did, however I have not received much pain relief. Is there any published work out there that addresses the question of how often multi-level cervical fusions fail to reduce pain, leading to chronic pain? Thanks.
599170 tn?1300973893 I am just recovering from an anterior cervical discectomy w grafting and fusion and cant handle toughts of another surgery, Do you think this could be dealt with at a urgent care clinic? I had a cyst removed 15 years or so ago from oppisite hand at a clinic. what ever this is its rock hard, and deffinatley does notmove its in the complete shape of a circle , can feel it from both anterior and posterior of hand it feels like the size of a large pea.
Avatar n tn I have been told it will be a anterior cervical disecomy with fusion. Is this the same surgery yoyu had and if you do not mind, what was hard about your recovery? so sorry not to have help for you.
395684 tn?1215997724 I have severe joint pain that moves from joint to joint throughout the day. my doctor did an MRI on my head and my neck as well as blood work. The MRI was fine, the blood work came back fine except she said something was elevated (it began with a C) and indicated that there was inflamation somewhere in my body, but she doesn't know where.
Avatar f tn I am now just over months post op from a cervical fusion at C5-C6, C6-C7, and C7-T1. Well, I wanted to let you all know what I have learned in the past month or so. I had another set of xrays and finally an MRI. The good news is that there is nothing wrong with the level above my cervical fusion. The bad news is that it is caused by the additional movement the upper neck is forced to perform. I am now taking Vicodin 3-4 times a day with minimal relief, but I do not want to become a zombie.
Avatar f tn During my recovery, the pin from the fusion was rejected by my body and ended up in my trigger finger preventing extensor movement, and so I then had to have more surgery to move the pin back into a more secure position, and so far the pin has stayed secure. I had the dressings removed a few days ago, and have found that I now have no extensor function in my little finger? they are now sending me for a ultrasound.
Avatar f tn Discuss all pros and cons before you go for the surgery. Wrist fusion will let you do day to day activities, playing piano but playing of golf and other physical activities should be restricted. Take care!
Avatar f tn Thank you. I do not want the surgery, at this point I feel I will get temporary relief like I did with my fusion but what am I adding down the road. I have had the steroid injections before the back surgery and it did not work but have not done any lately. I did go to a pain management doctor in 2011, was kinda turned off, it looked like a drug house with people giving urine before before they got the prescriptions.
1033165 tn?1309435416 Hi Las, my names Phill, i just made the decision to have a total wrist fusion, i also had 3 options, a partical fusion, total fusion or a joint replacement. i decided to have a total fusion because i'm a very active and still have a few years ahead of me. the partical fusion was not an option because there were to many limitations also the possibility of more arthritis in the future and doing this all over again.
1027575 tn?1390960418 My TOTAL WRIST FUSION was an outpatient surgery, i stayed in the surgery center for 23 hours the was released. The bone graph from the hip felt like a really bad charlie horse if you know what i mean and i felt like i was a 100 year old man with bad hips for the first 2 weeks or so. Please keeps us informed and and we'll let you know what to expect through our own expirences.
871206 tn?1274914516 I had fusion on 2 levels in 2007 with great results. to good in fact, now I damaged the L2 joint with severe leg pain. I am scheduled for a single lumbar fusion on 6/11/09. But the Dr did say that secondary fusion success rates are lower than primary fusion. Does that sound right to you? what are the diffferences? I am 48 yr old thin healthy male with a screwed up back. The prognosis is encouraging from the DR but I am really concerned with the fusion success rate.
251991 tn?1239296030 I recently had L5 S1 Spinal fusion 11 weeks ago, I now have had for 2 weeks numb and tingling in left pinky and ring finger I recently fell down prior to it. Has anyone had this problem in these 2 fingers and if so were you diagnosed?
Avatar n tn A diffuse disc bulge posteriorly measuring up to 2 mm along with adjacent ligamentum flavum thickening results in mild to moderate central canal stenosis. Facet joint hypertrophy and luschka joint hypertrophy on the left contribute to mild left neuroforaminal stenosis. The right neural foramen is patent." So now with a fusion above and below my C5-6 is blown away! I am so confused and worried that I am going to loose complete feeling in my arms.
