Common Questions and Answers about Fentanyl for moderate sedation

Avatar f tn Sooo my gp's gonna put me on fentanyl. But before he does I have to go in to the office to sign a liability waiver. Now I'm not stupid I know fentanyls dangerous.. But is it really that dangerous. I've never heard of a doctor do this before. Is this normal????
Avatar m tn She said that she could just use fentanyl only or the CRNA could give propofol or propofol/fentanyl. The sedation issue is more complicated; IMHO if all I could get was Versed/fentanyl, I would skip the sedation (the doc agrees that a lot of people have trouble with this combo). Many docs rush the exam and make it painful and that's why some (a minority) insist on sedation.
Avatar n tn Should I go without an amnesia drug and just use Fentanyl for pain instead? I have a pretty high pain tolerance so this experience was a surprise for me. I had an upper endoscopy a few years ago and was given 6 mg. of Versed and 200 mcg. of Fentanyl and don't remember a thing. I don't mind remembering, but I don't want to be in pain.
Avatar m tn The slight pain close to kidney comes and stays for a couple of weeks, then disappears for a couple of weeks and then comes back. Always the same spot. Occult blood test is negative and I'm usually not constipated. No sudden weight loss or loss of appetite, but feeling tired. (I think it's because of my weight1?!) Can I avoid colonoscopy? no history of colorectal cancer in the family. How do I know the cause for this slight pinch/stretch like pain?
1348686 tn?1310654243 Try to get propofol for sedation rather than the usual crappy mix of Versed./fentanyl...............this often causes significant distress (it doesn;t work) then the patient gets sent home in a daze to experience nightmares/PTSD....
Avatar n tn General anesthesia is not a covered service for an epidural steroid injection because it is not medically necessary since these procedures usually take less than 10 minutes. Moderate sedation is what is usually given during procedures. It is generally referred to as Twilight sedation.
Avatar f tn Endoscopy is safe, but almost all of the risk (drug effects or perforation) is caused by the sedation. Most docs insist on sedation; but if you schedule the exam and show up prepped and tell them no sedation (don't sign the consent) most will obey your wishes. I am not advocating doing these tests unsedated; I just think that patients should have a choice.
Avatar n tn I can tell you they usually use medications named Versed (which is an amnesic and makes you sleepy and not remember the procedure) and Fentanyl (an IV pain medication). These two drugs together produce the sedation for the procedure and you will be comfortable. Most people don't remember the procedure at all.
Avatar m tn Actually, fentanyl has a very short half-life, which is one reason it's commonly used for twilight sedation for outpatient procedures. It's the method of delivery through the patch that makes it last 72 hours, not the molecule itself. If you've had the patch off for three days and feel fine, you're in great shape!
Avatar n tn All the stuff I can find with Google mention dangers with sedation and cirrhosis but little about sedation with moderate damage.
Avatar f tn I was in and out within an hour. I had sedation but doctor proceeded before it started working.i felt everything was in so much pain had to stop the procedure. I was sweating, screaming in agony. About to be sick and he was still shoving that camera and he knew sedation hadn't worked because twice he asked if I felt doppy and twice I said no. I had 2mg midazolam,100mcg fentanyl, 20mg buscopan. As I was given a coffee and biscuit after my colonoscopy was when I felt my sedative work.

Avatar m tn I had one in juky w/o sedation (fentanyl only-which was a waste)....now symptoms and elevated blood tests indicate a bad situation. I moved since July and now I can't find anyone who will this colononscopy w/o sedation; one hospital agreed, I did the prep , reported this morning and the GI nurse said "sign this sedation consent" or we won't do you, no matter what you were told.
Avatar m tn Minor Sedation? For what? Are you talking about antidepressants during tx?If you were just recently diagnosed then the liver biopsy will tell how much damage is done to your liver. Then you can go from there.Viral laod does not tell extent of damage just tells how much of the virus you have.Hopefully if your bopsy shows little or no damage you can wait for the newer drugs.Stay on this forum and get all the knowledge you can about this disease.Knowledge is Power .Thats what Ive done.
1112960 tn?1258585751 He can request conscious/twilight sedation if he likes; it’s similar to the sedation used for colonoscopy. They typically use a combination of Versed and Fentanyl; or something similar, and he shouldn’t feel much pain or discomfort. He might feel some mild to moderate pain afterwards in the right shoulder from referred pain, though; his should subside in a few hours. Also, make sure the doctor is ordering a ultrasound guided biopsy; this would be expected now, I believe, but ask anyway.
Avatar f tn For me Fentanyl patches 50mcg have saved my sanity. They lessen the pain but don't take it away but make life a little bit easier. I also take Tizanadine and oxycodone for flare ups. In the morning I start taking Savella the new Fibromyalgia medication. My Rheumatologist gave me a four week starter pack of Savella today. I'm really nervous to take this medication because both Cymbalta and Lyrica were horrible medications for me. The side effects scare me.
592912 tn?1307406761 Also, you are the sex and age group that is one of the hardest populations to sedate for Twilight sedation. Another thing is that the more times you are given sedation in your life the more tolerant your body becomes of the medications and the more it can take to sedate you. I am sorry you had a hard time I am sure no one wanted you to hurt. I have had this problem a few times during procedures as well and other times I have sedated really easy.
Avatar f tn I had to look up midazolam and that's the same as Versed. I can't stand drugs but I love Versed. Such a happy med. I've had Versed and fentanyl (for pain) during all 3 of my catheter ablations. During the cath they will have the pulse oximeter clipped to your finger and will monitor your O2 levels the whole time. If they think you're going a bit low, they'll just give you some oxygen.
Avatar m tn I have not had jugular biopsy but I have had an angiogram as a diagnostic for liver cancer. They do not out you all the way out for that because the need to have you hold your breath. Trust me, under the sedation you will feel no pain. Maybe someone else here can answer your question directly.
Avatar f tn Yes, they are safe. Most of us with cirrhosis commonly have an endoscopy and colonoscopy every year or so to screen and monitor the status of our varices. I have taken miralax many times with no adverse effects. What can more problematic is any anesthesia type drug(s) you may be given. I assume this procedure is being performed by your gastro and she/he is aware of your cirrhosis?
Avatar n tn Both procedures required some type of sedation (versed for the colonscopy and propofol for the GYN procedure). Both doctors said I had no problems with PVCs during the time I was sedated. Seems that the anes.
374225 tn?1269899262 See if your doctor can also write you a prescription for some Requip for restlessness, Neurontin is a great help for anxiety and malaise, some Flexeril or Soma for a few weeks for muscle spasms and maybe some Seroquel low dose for sleep. Clonidine will regulates blood pressure, creepy-crawly feeling and will make withdrawals easier. Phenergan is good gor nausea. Valerian and Magnesium is sometimes helpful remedies over the counter for mild sedation, sleep and muscle relaxation.
Avatar f tn How long would the normal withdrawals last for someone who has been using fentanyl for 2 months?
Avatar f tn Hi Dr Kaul, Thank you so much for your information, we are having a meeting this afternoon and I will mention those things you said, I know the sedation drugs that he is on they are fentanyl, Diprivan (propofol) and Midaz - we are going to find out what drugs he is on for the seizures this afternoon as they changed them on Tuesday, I know he had an ecg yesterday and having a ct scan now, these are his second scans that he is having as the others did not give an accurate reading because of the se
Avatar f tn Recently propofol (Diprivan®) has been used as an alternative method of sedation for patients undergoing endoscopy procedures. Propofol is a short-acting anesthetic agent. The advantages of propofol are its rapid induction of sedation, quicker patient recovery time, and anti-emetic effect. The use of propofol requires monitoring for respiratory and/or cardiac collapse by trained personnel....." anti-emetic means anti nausea or something along those lines.
Avatar m tn I called out that it was not so pleasant so they stopped the RF and topped me off again with more Fentanyl, waiting a minute or two for that to work its way through before starting again. Second time in I barely felt anything. They did some blasting with the RF and it triggered the SVT again, no problem, they paced it back to normal and started again with the RF. After a few rounds of RF blasting they switched back to the pacing to see if they could make the problem re-occur.
