We have a member (Namnam) that has experienced the same side effect to Fentanyl - weight loss. Luckily she claimed she had weight to lose. It did level off and she didn't continue to lose weight. In time you may have experienced the same results. I think she's been on Fentanyl for about 5 years. It's the only thing that controls her pain. As our Remar suggested talk to your prescribing physician.

I am on the 100mcg patches and Oxycodone IR (Immediate Release) 15mg tablets and have not experienced any weight loss. I have actually gained weight. I believe the weight gain is from my ankle fusion surgery not the medications... just as someone mentioned above I think maybe since you found some relief or comfort that you are not as depressed and feeling better I am sure you probably eat better and don't even notice it... I found when I was on Fentanyl that I gained a lot of weight. For me, Fentanyl seemed to change my tastes. I had not ever been a sugar user (in many, many years.) In the past few years, I had been working out hard at a gym and also being very careful about what I ate. I got out of the habit of getting to the gym when I started having a lot of surgeries, but I still was careful with what I ate.

I started to work out, dropped all the weight gained from the Fentanyl and the other 8 meds I needed to take due to the side effects of the Fentanyl, and now am on two patches (50 and 12) and on a razors edge as pain goes. Recently had heaps of dental work done. Crowns replaced, amalamates removed etc and my THS went through the roof. The hospital over-seer will not approve my back surgery ( all cardio bloods etc are EXCELLENT) and everyone is amazed I am 65 years old. What is going on?

I was prescribed Fentanyl for pain and all I can write about is how drugged up I was. Mine was 50mcg and my mind had a hard time with the pain issues. Sometimes it would stop the pain and other times, I didn't know what day of the week it was. The worse part for me was the weight loss. I thought I was eating enough but this medication dulled my senses enough to lose so much weight, I looked like I was dying. I went down to 108lbs from 150 lbs.

I can assure you if your friend died from an OD of fentanyl and alcohol he would as dominosarah said fallen asleep very quickly. Since fentanyl is a painkiller and in high dose makes you drowsy and stops breathing there would be no pain and he would have stopped breathing very quickly and died. There would be no reason to have a seizure as fentanyl does not cause seizures. Was this an intentional overdose or accidental and was he prescribed Fentanyl or a recreational user?

This medication shut down my digestive tract and created problems with my pancreas and the weight loss was scary and that is what made me quit. This drug works on the brain centers perception of pain and really screws with the mind. You may not be aware of how powerful these drugs are but they do take control. My pain doctor will do treatments on my spine but the steroids he uses only cause more weight gain and I have to refuse them as my back cannot support any more weight. Am so trying to stay out of a wheelchair or being bed ridden. I am getting so I can do less and less. Have started a website for people in chronic pain just to give me something meaningful to do and help others. Is there anything else that can or is being used in treatments for the spine besides steroids.

Methadone absolutely has made me gain weight and I do days of total fasting, with no loss. I take methadone for cripling back pain. Will switching to opana allow me to lose the weight I've put on and help back pain, which the methadone was taking more and more with less relief?

I know all these meds have taken my quality of life go way down. I want my life back and the weight gain since I have not been able to be functional has made me really depressed and not being allowed to drive over this has confined me to be stuck at home , and taking showers and baths have interfered at lot because with experience these patches are not waterproof as they claim. He was trying anything he could to get me out of pain and added Vicodin as a break through medication. Each person is different when it comes to pain medication. The Fentanyl has a slow effect working on the system. It is hard to know it is working when you are in pain. Eventually it kicked in and all I did was sleep.

I have lost 13 pounds since then, this is the first time I have had a weight loss issue, and my diarrhea is now mucousy and yellowish. I find that opiate therapy can either increase your appetite because you have less pain and feel better or the medication itself can reduce you appetite. These things can be insidious and we are often consciously unaware of them.

If the pain is still there, obviously the Fentanyl is not working and you need to address what is actually happening. Fentanyl CAN relieve pain, depending... It also dopes up your mind and body. You have no way of knowing this until you can think clearly and the Fentanyl prevents that clear thinking. Find out what is really going on and GET OFF THE FENTANYL, THIS STUFF IS DANGEROUS!

I am going into to see my dr and need to switch off the fentanyl. Is there any easy way way to do this and what would be a good option in place of it???? I place one 12mcg patch on every other day and one 25mcg patch. Main reason for stopping is weight gain which is drawing me into major deppression. Any advice is good advice.

Hello! I am on 100-150mg fentanyl every 48hrs. My doc tried to up my script about 4 months back to 150 but my insurance will only pay for 15 patches a month, so I have to cut my patches and increase as needed and sometimes have to refill after 21 days. I also have been noticing bursts of anger that are uncontrollable. I feel like this anger has taken over my body and I have to just wait about ten minutes for it to leave my body.
