Common Questions and Answers about Fear of germs

fear

Avatar n tn It sounds very much like your grandson might be dealing with some ocd (obsessive-compulsive disorder). Fear of germs, and behaviors such as his, are pretty common in ocd. The way to deal with it isn't going to be by forcing him to hug or touch anything, but by figuring out what the fear is and confronting that fear. The rest will fall in line once the anxiety at the root of this is dealt with.
Avatar f tn Since you are already on medication for OCD, you surely have a strong understanding of this disorder. You know your fear of snails is irrational, but the OCD has the upper hand. For now. It's my humble opinion that the medication is not working very well for you. Perhaps upping the dose or changing meds might help, but they will just mask the symptoms. If you REALLY want to get your life back, I suggest you invest your time getting therapy to deal with and hopefully overcome your OCD.
Avatar f tn Came home of course I washed my hands many times and 5 hours later we had dinner. we finished so when I picked up my phone forgot all about the fact I had touched it before with dirty hands and put my hand in my mouth. Freaking out I keep thinking of everyone's dirty hands on that bus!!
Avatar f tn Hi if the wound was still bleeding there is more chance of transmitting germs. It is an extremely small risk as most germs don't last all the long outside of the body. If it wasn't bleeding anymore I wouldn't worry too much. She did the right thing with cleaning it.
Avatar m tn I am cleaning my hands with soap for every 10-15 minutes because of the fear of catching germs in my hands. I even wash my hands after handling any objects or things which i fear may contain germs like HIV and others living in that object. Worst case, i am cleaning even my soap before my every usage due to the fear of germs. Moreover i am afraid of the water splashes from toilets and bathrooms. Do anyone washing their hands this much often? even cleaning soap?
Avatar n tn I was similar growing up. I suffered from something called emetophobia (fear of throwing up) so I was afraid of germs, ate only "safe" things and worried constantly about something causing me to throw up. I did not out grow it, unfortunately. Has he been ill recently, or had a bad experience being ill? Not that being ill is ever a good experience, but some children like me seem to be traumatized by it.

Avatar f tn Hi, so say my sister who is older and her boyfriend have sex a lot in her room in my house, i absolutely freak out because i feel whatever either of them touch right after they have sex will be contaminated with sperm. We do share a bathroom between our rooms, and that is the one we both primarily use. But i am scared to use it and clean it ridiculously because i feel like if i touch something that either of them have touched and i go to the bathroom or something that i could get pregnant.

Avatar f tn Hello everyone! I hope this isn't long. I have been afraid of germs for less than a year now but it keeps getting worst some days r worst than others. It started by me being afraid of stds and now I am still very afraid but it seems to be spreading to germs in general. I refuse to touch door knobs and I hate when people touch me or even pass by me and touch me with their back or anything. I don't lend people my phone or let them borrow my belongings.
Avatar f tn Ok my friend I will tell you with 120% that you ll be ok and there is nothing to be scared of at attl, its the OCD. The amount of fear you are showing reminds me of the same level of fear I show towards HIV and the fear I stepped on a discarded syringe.

Avatar f tn Thing is myneighborhood has cats and altough I havent seen any on my porch I fear a lot for germs. Tonight i accidentally sat on my bed with my shorts on but quickly took it off as i remembered. Am I safe?
Avatar n tn Well, lots of new parents have this fear especially with a first baby and truth is that with a new baby, you should be somewhat cautious. Our pediatrician said not to go to large social gatherings the first month, keep baby in infant carrier at times of big crowds, encourage people to touch baby's feet rather than hands. We did this with our first. But whew, our second? Baby went EVERYWHERE.
2117757 tn?1335965278 m going to the beach tomorrow and I want so bad to get a tan but for the fear of sunburn I will be using sunblock..lol.
Avatar f tn Hi Lily, I would like to start off by telling you that I can relate. 100%. I also have a fear of contanimation as well. I fear germs and chemicals of every kind, so you can imagine how that works, scared that my house is full of germs but scared to use a disinfectant. I am in constant fear that I have come into contact with a chemical that can cause damage to mysel, my family or my cat. I do not wear shoes inside my house. I wash my clothes immediately when I get home and shower.
Avatar f tn Now on to your question of how to overcome the fear of having people around your newborn. For me it naturally lessened as she got older. I kept her home from Christmas since she was only a month old and some people didn't understand, but two of her cousins showed up with bad colds so I knew my fear had been justified! Eventually as she got older I took her more places. Use your mother's instinct to your advantage and ask lots of questions to your pediatrician.
Avatar f tn s called the Germ theory of disease, which is that germs cause disease and medicine should be focused on killing germs. Before he died, however, and you won't find this many places, he changed his mind, concluding rightly that we'll never be able to kill all the "germs" nor would we want to, and that the issue is the strength of the immune system and its ability to fight off toxic stuff.
Avatar n tn Go to the OCD forum. You weren't ever at risk of contacting HIV.
