Common Questions and Answers about Fear of driving in the mountains

fear

Avatar f tn I haven't always had a fear of snow or ice driving until the recent past few years. If I am not in the driver's seat, I can't control the anxiety. If I am in the driver's seat, it's much, much worse. My panic starts the minute we start moving.
365714 tn?1292199108 re supposed to get rain tonight in the valleys and snow in the mountains. We had rain all day in the valleys yesterday and snow all night in the mountains and they are beautiful. It's just amazing! I love snow and so I look forward to winter!
Avatar n tn I have good days and bad days. The key is you have to keep driving or the fear will over come you. The solution is once you don't care anymore about having a panic attack while driving, you will tend not to have them. I have spent numerous hours and years researching this topic. I highly recommend the follwing resources to help you over-come this fear of driving. In my opinion they are priceless and well worth the money.
Avatar m tn Had one time a couple of summers ago when the interstate was completely stopped. Had to get out of the car and stand outside, ended up talking to the lady in the car behind me and before I knew it, we were moving. So try some things to get your mind off yourself and think about something else.
Avatar f tn This will mean nothing to you ... or it will mean something. In the event that it gives you something positive, I wanted to post this. The Station by Robert J. Hastings Tucked away in our subconscious minds is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long, long trip that almost spans the continent.
1074864 tn?1256932915 You are not actually fearful of driving or travelling itself, but rather the fear of losing control if you have another panic attack. This is because when we have a panic attack, the first thing we want to do is to retreat to our "safe place", which for most people is our home. The further away from our comfort zone, the more uncomfortable we feel.
Avatar f tn lll become incredibly anxious. This is managable by turning the lights on, but my other problem is driving in the dark. I have to put the inside light on in my car and keep checking behind me both of which aren't safe. In the past I had two minor panic/anxiety attacks from driving in th rk and I dont know how to cope with it. I'm embarrased to tell family and friends and find myself making excuses for why I can't travel home at night. Does anyone have any advice?
Avatar f tn Specialmom pretty much said everything I was thinking, and then some. :0) SO much of anxiety is fed by US, and with time and practice, you can learn how to stop feeding the beast. Honest to goodness distraction is one of the best things you can do for anxiety and panic. So, like sm suggested, music, looking out the window are good things. You could also bring along a puzzle book, like a word search, etc.
Avatar n tn Were you in a car accident of this nature in the past, this would cause your fear? Anxiety causes most of us to develop fears like this, some have a root cause and others don't. Therapy will help you determine why you have this fear, and how to get over it. If therapy doesn't help (I think it will) there are medications to ease your fear. Know you're not alone and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Avatar n tn The best advice I can give you is to talk to someone and try to face the fear. Get back in your car and go for a drive even if it is only around the block. Each time you do it it will get easier. You have to take your control back. I should really learn to take my own advice. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you feel better.....
358304 tn?1409709492 27 Male. Suffers from anxiety from time to time. I am getting better, but I still struggle. It's been a while since I've been on the forum, which is a good thing, but I'm no stranger. haha. It's amazing, when I'm feeling great and out of my "funk", I always love dropping by the forum and giving some words of encouragement, and hope that I'll never be back in that boat, but her I am... needing some encouragement once again. ha.

8377023 tn?1399509160 Princesslo007 is right, i would fill in the parents and see what they say about it. Also if your scared of your water breaking in the car i would start taking a towel or something and put it on the seat and then take it with you! Just in case (: also be careful! And if you start getting painful contractions pull over, im sure you already know that though.
4451415 tn?1359271504 We live in CO an my husband once thought it would be fun to take a road trip through the mountains when I was around 34 weeks. It was fine, but peeing in the woods was an adventure!
1785438 tn?1314987935 I do feel like I will pass out sometimes and/or throw up and/or become paralyzed with fear that I would not be able to even drive my car and be stuck in the middle of the road and then I am freaking out more and more and more because I am so stuck I just can't do anything about it. Phew. That really puts me over the edge. That is a major, major problem and I just don't know how to overcome it.

105530 tn?1279585282 smelling the fumes in a tunnel brought back subconscious memories of the scary carbon monoxide event when I was teenager (which happened when I was driving). Great Question!
637722 tn?1245086059 t charged with anything because the woman driving the van suddenly stopped in front of me to put her car in a lower gear when I suddenly hit her. I also had another incident where I swerved all over the road during icy conditions. Since then, I have had a phobia of getting hurt or hurting someone else while driving in the snow or icy conditions. I cannot hold down a steady job because of this.
Avatar m tn I have just recently developed anxiety while driving on the high ways I have been driving since I was 15 years old I am now 30 years old for some reason when I start driving my heart starts racing my hands sweat my feet do also and I just feel like I need to stop and I cant continue to go but just the other day while driving in the city I got a anxiety attack I felt like the road was to big for me and I needed to stop I also check my blood pressure and my pulse is really high (101) I do not
1804812 tn?1329677557 ve taken some of the possibilities of getting stuck in the car out of the equation (ie...running out of gas). The cell phone of course, gives us a peace of mind that if something DID happen, we'd easily be able to reach someone to come help. Bring a drink along with you (not an alcoholic one, lol). That will help, to sip on something...especially if you get dry mouth when anxious. Have an emergency kit in your trunk at all times.
Avatar f tn Hello. I'm 17 and lately have been struggling with the fact that I can't drive without thinking I ran someone over. I get so worried and depressed and will check the news daily. Today as I was getting gas I happened to glance over and see a little boy with his mom at the pump connected to mine on the opposite side and obviously didn't think anything of it. I got in my car and headed on my way to the store and then my mind started with questions like where was the little boy?
3159640 tn?1430907300 t know why I am fixated on thinking there is a needle out there in the environment that is going to stick me. I am afraid of not being able to control everything and for some reason HIV needles have lodged in my brain so to speak!
Avatar f tn need I say more? The fear of being stuck in traffic and suddenly needing to go is a real fear based on a real problem. Generally I prepare for trips, and if shopping, make it a focused shop. No more aimless driving. I have to have a plan and stick to it. Same in stores: meandering around in a hugh store is sure to bring on panic. So again I now plan and stick to it. One department for shoes. No checking out several stores or departments.
Avatar f tn No major health probs, though heart murmurs run in my family. As my mother and I were driving back in the car from altitude, I experienced a fleeting sensation in my chest that was quite odd...like a series of rapid uneven "bubbling" followed by a big "thud" from what I am presuming is my heart, all accompanied by an adrenaline rush similar to what one might experience in freefall.
Avatar n tn I have son who just turned 5. He had/has sort of the same fear. He's always hated to have the window down in the car while driving and if it starts looking like a storm or the wind picks up while outside he starts getting anxious. He wants ALL his toys from outside picked up and put in the garage right away. He has no fear of fans though. I'm just a Mom, but I would say, wait it out. She is still very young. At that age it is hard to talk to her about fears and explain wind.
Avatar m tn You can even just browse through the OCD forum to get an idea of some of the advice that has been given to others with the same fears. It's not as simple as us telling you you would know if you were gay (which you would). Like any other kind of anxiety, you would accept that reassurance temporarily, but most likely, the fears will reemerge. This is why I think you should check out the OCD forum, there are suggestions you could benefit from that are specific to this exact issue.
