I am currently in a long term relationship, fully disclosed sexual history - but I am resisting suppression therapy. In a previous relationship I tried this for a year and found the side effects to be horrible - confusion, anxiety, agitation, poor typing skills, eye-blinking and muscle flickering.
I want to avoid passing the virus to my partner, but I cannot live a happy life with the side effects of Accyclovir.
Has anyone had better results with Famvir? And does it help suppress transmission like Valtrex does? My Dr thinks the Valtrex might be causing my hair loss so I am switching....
Some folks do have pain from valtrex and getting less acyclovir in the actual acyclovir pill controls your herpes without causing you as many side effects. You were given a higher dose of valtrex than you needed to initially treat your herpes and if you are sensitive to it, might take you a bit to get past the side effects. You only ever needed 1 gm twice a day initially. recurrences are treated with 500mg twice a day for 3 days.
so what do you do now? well the choice is yours.
When I am not dosing myself with ibuprophen( I was taking percocet at night but hated the side effects ) I am acutely aware now of pain in the neck in a localized area; below my ear. The doctor ordered an M.R.I. which I a awaiting and thought it could be a disc irritating a nerve but I am very unsure of that because the pain in my neck feels deeper than that. I am tired and looking forward to any thoughts suggestions coments. I live on an island and cannot wait until the M.R.I. results.
I used to only get an outbreak every 8-12 months, however since I started working full-time I have had 3 outbreaks in less than 2 months. I take famvir 2x250mg at first then 1 tablet every 12 hours for 3 doses and the outbreaks clear up within a week, but it is really starting to get me down and depressed.
My questions are:
1) Can recurrent herpes outbreaks lead to penile cancer? I am worried if the same area is affected by HSV a lot then could it cause cancer there?
hi vaginaprobzx100. my outbreaks i expect look like typical outbreaks. in order to get diagnosed though i had to have a western blot done. the regular test was consistently negative. I've had this for 10 years so i know how it behaves. it is MOST DEFINITELY more active when SSRI's or 5-htp are involved. in fact, way down on the list of side effects for celexa under uncommon is "herpes outbreaks". it's not my imagination.
If you are looking to reduce transmission to partners, the only known ways to reduce that are to use antivirals (Valtrex, acyclovir, famvir) and condoms, along with avoiding sexual activity when you have any symptoms.
If you are looking to reduce outbreaks, studies are mixed for this.

Did you tested for HHV 6 ??
It is know to cause neuropathic symtoms.

My doctor said its very unusual to have outbreaks all the time on medication. She has prescribed Famvir for me now. Can you tell me if this is normal?
now I read that this seems to be more common aide effect than manufacture is aware of. Have read that valtrex also has the same side effect. how about Famvir? This is soo depressing and is the hair loss permanent?

Yes, getting her tested is the big priority right now. I don't use Famvir for suppression, mostly I use acyclovir twice a day or valacyclovir once per day. Diarrhea could definitely be a side effect of Famvir.
Im not to comfortable with him, he never told me about valtrex possible side effects. I had look information of valtrex and my symptoms are very similar to valtrex side effects including confusion, agressive behavior, low state of consiousness, rash, nausea, allergic reactions and visual abnormalities.

In the following years (2007-2009) i have only had 3-4 outbreaks. when i get an outbreak i use famvir, 2 tablets at first then 1 every 12 hours for 3 doses. these always worked quickly and the outbreaks were never severe and didn't last longer than a week or so start to finish.
In the last 2 weeks (jan 2010) i had a small outbreak that i immediately took my usual dose of famvir for and it cleared up, almost totally within 5-7 days.
