I started taking valtrex but i seem to have constant outbreaks..one day of relief then a weird feeling down there. Sometimes i feel bumps or cuts. I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid. My doctor said its very unusual to have outbreaks all the time on medication. She has prescribed Famvir for me now. Can you tell me if this is normal?
have been now 5 months outbreak free (leading a really healthy lifestyle). My doctor prescribed me for my outbreaks famvir, 125 mg twice a day during 5 days.
I have a girlfriend and we have talked about this and both of us would like to make sex without condoms. We have sex each 2/3 weeks. I wouldnt like to take suppresive therapy daily, if we are having sex each 2 / 3 weeks (wich is very little).
Taking this in mind what would be considered an effective suppresive therapy?
Yes you can and sometimes it happens. treat this one like you usually do ( or consider the 1 day dosing of famvir even ). if it takes longer than a week to heal or you get another ob soon afterwards, follow up on things wtih your provider to make sure you don't have anything else going on and to discuss treatment options.
It should've been 2 500mg famvir tablets to take 2x/day for 1 day. Is that what you were given or just 1 500mg pill?
I'm all for suppressive therapy myself. If your man turns out not to have hsv2 then it would be worth it. If he's also hsv2+ then it's up to you if you want to go on suppressive therapy or not. Who needs more ob's than they have to is my motto but it's your choice. I still get ob's frequently when not on medication so I'm a little more gung ho about suppressive therapy than some folks with herpes are.
Did you tested for HHV 6 ??
It is know to cause neuropathic symtoms.

Since being diagnosed two years ago, I still get an outbreak every two months. I only use valtrex when i have an outbreak (twice a day for 5 days), but my doctor says that even so my outbreaks should get less frequent over time. Anyone else have this problem?
I was not comfortable with the dr so i went to see another one, he prescribed me famvir and told me to come back in 6 weeks for testing for herpes, though he saw nothing he could culture or anything indicative of herpes. The famvir relieved my symptoms though every time i go off it i get about 5 days of relief before symptoms start to come back. I also have had general (and painful) adenopathy since early feb. but dr dismissed it as no big deal.
It seems that famvir and lysine are not effective on the herpes that was dormat before prednisone treatment. Does anyone have any suggestion on what may be effective?

your provider is once again prescribing you the wrong dose of famvir too. It is 1gm twice a day for 1 day to treat herpes recurrences. They are prescribing you the shingles doses which aren't needed for genital herpes. There is no benefit to treating for 7 days - most recurrences are almost healed on their own during that time.
side effects are the same with all herpes antivirals actually - they aren't higher with acyclovir.
Friday my PA made a quick telephone diagnosis based on symptom report. I have been taking 500 mg tabs of Famvir, 2/day for about 1 wk, then infection came up Thursday, Itching around labia majoris, bumps/ knots in the skin the size of lentils but I could not see them. Can not see vesicles. They burn on urination and hurt (pressure) but there is no nerve pain. I had sharp pains in my groin on Thursday night which have subsided.
I have type 1 hsv genital and oral. I had sex with a girl 2 weeks ago (wore a condom) and took 1000 mg of famvir that night after sex and the next 3 days. I don't think she is being honest with me about type 2. I have had 4-5 days of grueling lumbar and buttocks pain just a week after sex. I can't even stand straight. I now feel warm and I have a headache. Same stuff I had in my initial OB 5 years ago. I'm so scared. My legs feel weak and I am in shock.
Has anyone had better results with Famvir? And does it help suppress transmission like Valtrex does? My Dr thinks the Valtrex might be causing my hair loss so I am switching....
Took another urine test 12 days in and turns out clean(no high WBC). Doctor puts me on famvir 500mg 4 times day as a precaution. 2nd urine test was prior to start of famvir.
Day 15 slight burning in anus region. no blisters just whitehead oil glands that are still there... Doctor swabs the region and a tzank smear which comes out negative. Given myco cream and also use zeasorb and lamisil which provides some relief but overall rash has gotten worse 2 weeks later.
Less than a month now I have been infected with hvs probably type 1 genital cuz I got from oral. Had the first OB a day later and yesterday I have noticed what looks like blister in skin around the head. I knew I would get other OB although I was hoping to be in the group of folks who only get it once. How is it possible to have it again so soon? I did everything I have seen on line to minimized my risk but waoooo!!
I hope someone can help. I've had horrible recurring pain in my right eye for over a year. Went to Optho. multiple times and was told it was an infected oil gland. I was put on low dose antibiotics for over 6 months and told to apply warm compresses and scrub eye with a baby shampoo/water solution.
I developed a rash on my buttocks months into this that my GP diagnosed as shingles and prescribed Famvir.
Sounds like a great plan. Thank you so much for your genuine concern. I know I don't have some life threatening disease but the frequency of this is enough to make anyone's nerves shot. I of course worry about passing along to my wife and son. I am extra careful, but when I cant kiss my wife two weeks out of every month, that gets old too. I had a PCR swab test done today which is day one of the latest outbreak.
i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.
