If so why is the blood test showing positive for some sort of herpes infection within the last 28 days? I do not have any visible sores but I am currently taking Famvir three times a day is it necessary?
d like for us to be able to have oral sex, but not if it will further spread the virus. We are both taking Famvir daily and almost never have outbreaks. I also know that it is possible to spread the virus without an outbreak. Please don't suggest condoms or dental dams - I'd rather just skip it altogether. Also, I know that prophylactics often don't protect against spreading the virus.
Information update....The doctor called back yesterday and said that the cultures tested positive for HSV 1 and negative for HSV 2. The doctor did give me some cream to apply, but other than that I just have to wait for them to go away.

i doubt you have developed a tolerance for famvir. I believe cortisone can affect the immune system, and it's very probable that it's causing an ob. The sores in your mouth may be cankers, which are related to stress and immune system overload.
Talk to your doc and see if you can get off that cortisone!
Did you tested for HHV 6 ??
It is know to cause neuropathic symtoms.

the initial outbreak was painful and tookseveral weeks to clear up even after taking a course of Famvir. Even though I had a lingering discomfort in the affected area I was otherwise symptom free for about 8 months. After that I got outbreaks about 5-6 times a year that were treated with Famvir. I then received the Shingles vaccine which was followed within a month by an outbreak that was light. That was followed by 8 months of nothing except the lingering discomfort in the area.
There was probably a leaflet of some sort with this kind of information included with the medicine package.
they say that Valtrex does a better job of helping you not to transmit the virus (most of this information provided by GlaxoSmithKline of course). The supression study has them identical. I am in a relationship where I really enjoy our "personal time". Yes the 2 perscriptions are very different in cost, but I want the best chance not to infect my mate. I have had the virus for a LONG time, and through the Valtrex and knowing my body well...
My doctor said its very unusual to have outbreaks all the time on medication. She has prescribed Famvir for me now. Can you tell me if this is normal?
In the following years (2007-2009) i have only had 3-4 outbreaks. when i get an outbreak i use famvir, 2 tablets at first then 1 every 12 hours for 3 doses. these always worked quickly and the outbreaks were never severe and didn't last longer than a week or so start to finish.
In the last 2 weeks (jan 2010) i had a small outbreak that i immediately took my usual dose of famvir for and it cleared up, almost totally within 5-7 days.
I hope someone can help. I've had horrible recurring pain in my right eye for over a year. Went to Optho. multiple times and was told it was an infected oil gland. I was put on low dose antibiotics for over 6 months and told to apply warm compresses and scrub eye with a baby shampoo/water solution.

I have a girlfriend and we have talked about this and both of us would like to make sex without condoms. We have sex each 2/3 weeks. I wouldnt like to take suppresive therapy daily, if we are having sex each 2 / 3 weeks (wich is very little).
Taking this in mind what would be considered an effective suppresive therapy?
It should've been 2 500mg famvir tablets to take 2x/day for 1 day. Is that what you were given or just 1 500mg pill?
i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.
Good Morning. My NP just called and the test was positive for HSV 2. She put me on Famvir 500 bid on day one and then 250 bid thereafter, when I left the office last week. So, an IgG wont be accurate now much to my dismay. I would have liked to know if new or old exposure. She said she was sorry that she just assumed it was from the new contact. Water under bridge now as I would prefer not to discontinue the suppressive. I did not mention before but I am a RN.
Has anyone had better results with Famvir? And does it help suppress transmission like Valtrex does? My Dr thinks the Valtrex might be causing my hair loss so I am switching....
Also my doctor prescribed famvir but I don't have genital herpes. Can Famvir help with penis pain?
a 10 day course of famvir won't affect your blood test results.
when you repeated your test, was it a type specific test?
I'm on famvir for suppression, I had a cultural swab done a year ago at a clinic, I pretty well knew I had contracted the virus because the initial outbreak was crucial. The babies father knows of me having it, and got tested his hsv1 and 2 have came back negative.
I was not comfortable with the dr so i went to see another one, he prescribed me famvir and told me to come back in 6 weeks for testing for herpes, though he saw nothing he could culture or anything indicative of herpes. The famvir relieved my symptoms though every time i go off it i get about 5 days of relief before symptoms start to come back. I also have had general (and painful) adenopathy since early feb. but dr dismissed it as no big deal.
I do. I have for years but have never had this problem. Possibly I'm just more sensitive with the HSV? They called in Famvir for me to start but I think I might take a medication vacation for a few days. If I start showing sx of an outbreak, I'll go get the Famvir. I've read that Famvir isn't as effective at suppressing viral shedding as Valtrex. I'm not in a relationship right now, so that's not a pressing issue, I just like being informed.
I have type 1 hsv genital and oral. I had sex with a girl 2 weeks ago (wore a condom) and took 1000 mg of famvir that night after sex and the next 3 days. I don't think she is being honest with me about type 2. I have had 4-5 days of grueling lumbar and buttocks pain just a week after sex. I can't even stand straight. I now feel warm and I have a headache. Same stuff I had in my initial OB 5 years ago. I'm so scared. My legs feel weak and I am in shock.
About 5 minutes later, I went to the bathroom. Immediately I became concerned and began checking internet forums for any and all information pertaining to an individual giving themselves HSV-2 from their own HSV-1. I have been noticing small sensations on various parts of my penis, primarily the tip. No discolorations, no growth, no blisters, and no burning sensation when I urinate, however I cannot shake the thought I have given myself HSV-2.
