Yes you can and sometimes it happens. treat this one like you usually do ( or consider the 1 day dosing of famvir even ). if it takes longer than a week to heal or you get another ob soon afterwards, follow up on things wtih your provider to make sure you don't have anything else going on and to discuss treatment options.
My doctor said its very unusual to have outbreaks all the time on medication. She has prescribed Famvir for me now. Can you tell me if this is normal?
My advice is for you to speak with your health care provider(s) about this, and discuss whther to stop taking the Famvir. The main reason for suppressive treatment of genital herpes is to prevent transmission to people who are not yet infected; or to preven frequent outbreaks. If either of you starts having frequent outbreaks after the drug is stopped, he or she can restart it. But it definitely isn't needed to prevent transmission to each other.
I was diagnosed with herpes 10 years ago. No blood test, visual inspection. I am now married with 2 childeren. My wife is aware of my herpes. 4 weeks ago I had my 1st severe outbreak. i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.
I was not comfortable with the dr so i went to see another one, he prescribed me famvir and told me to come back in 6 weeks for testing for herpes, though he saw nothing he could culture or anything indicative of herpes. The famvir relieved my symptoms though every time i go off it i get about 5 days of relief before symptoms start to come back. I also have had general (and painful) adenopathy since early feb. but dr dismissed it as no big deal.
Definitely the next step is getting your man tested for herpes. He'll need a type specific herpes igg blood test for hsv1 and hsv2. Once you know his status then you can better decide what precautions to take together ( if any ).
Just to err on the side of caution - I'd call the clinic and ask them if they can mail you a copy of your herpes lesion culture results. The other option is to ask for a clinic nurse there to go over it with you.
have been now 5 months outbreak free (leading a really healthy lifestyle). My doctor prescribed me for my outbreaks famvir, 125 mg twice a day during 5 days.
I have a girlfriend and we have talked about this and both of us would like to make sex without condoms. We have sex each 2/3 weeks. I wouldnt like to take suppresive therapy daily, if we are having sex each 2 / 3 weeks (wich is very little).
Taking this in mind what would be considered an effective suppresive therapy?
Just to let you know, as a general fact you can get oral herpes from giving oral sex to someone with genital herpes, especially if the individual has type 1 genital herpes. However, if both of you have genital herpes then you already have antibodies for the virus. This means that as long as you perform oral sex when you partner is not having an outbreak you are not likely to become infected orally.

She told me that they were due to herpes. She referred to them as herpes zoster?? She prescribed me famvir and zithomax. I am seriously freaking out right now. I have had a horrible three years worrying about std's and thought i was finally done with that part of my life. I thought since i had taken the tests and they came back negative I would be fine??? Should I have gotten them to swab it and test it that way? Do I have throat herpes? Please help....
Ob's don't necessarily get less frequent over time. One study showed that 1/4 of folks have less ob's after 5 years of infection, 1/4 had more and the rest all had about the same number of ob's. It's different for everyone and probably has more to do with genetics than anything else.
You are having 6 ob's a year which I would assume is annoying.

your provider is once again prescribing you the wrong dose of famvir too. It is 1gm twice a day for 1 day to treat herpes recurrences. They are prescribing you the shingles doses which aren't needed for genital herpes. There is no benefit to treating for 7 days - most recurrences are almost healed on their own during that time.
side effects are the same with all herpes antivirals actually - they aren't higher with acyclovir.
I used to only get an outbreak every 8-12 months, however since I started working full-time I have had 3 outbreaks in less than 2 months. I take famvir 2x250mg at first then 1 tablet every 12 hours for 3 doses and the outbreaks clear up within a week, but it is really starting to get me down and depressed.

1) Can recurrent herpes outbreaks lead to penile cancer? I am worried if the same area is affected by HSV a lot then could it cause cancer there?
however, around a month after recieving the oral sex i got symptoms of redness and a little inflamation on the head of my penis (im not sure if this was herpes or not) and i took my famvir tablets as prescibed and it clearly up within a week.
3 months later i had a herpes outbreak (i know it was herpes this time, classic symptoms) and again i took famvir and it cleared up within a week or so. that was in january 2009, and now its june and i have had another herpes outbreak.
Hi there, I apoligise for the long post but it's been a tough year. 12 months ago I foolishly had unprotected sex twice in the same day with an old female friend. The first time was vigorous but well lubricated and the second time was rough as well but didn't have enough lubricant and at the end was quite painful for me but I didn't ask her to stop because she was reaching climax.
