I don't think we have info on famvir dosing during pregnancy. We recommend the higher immunosuppression doses of valtrex and acyclovir during the last month of pregnancy. Your body is naturally immunosuppressed during pregnancy so it takes the higher doses to better control the virus.
since you were infected with hsv2 prior to pregnancy, the odds of transmission to your baby during birth are less than 1% as long as you don't have any obvious symptoms during delivery.
have been now 5 months outbreak free (leading a really healthy lifestyle). My doctor prescribed me for my outbreaks famvir, 125 mg twice a day during 5 days.
I have a girlfriend and we have talked about this and both of us would like to make sex without condoms. We have sex each 2/3 weeks. I wouldnt like to take suppresive therapy daily, if we are having sex each 2 / 3 weeks (wich is very little).
Taking this in mind what would be considered an effective suppresive therapy?
Did you tested for HHV 6 ??
It is know to cause neuropathic symtoms.

I believe I have contracted genital HSV from receiving oral sex from a woman in jan of this year. 2 days later I experienced extreme pain in my penis, pain during urination and urinary urgency. I was tested for chlamydia, gonorrhea and bacterial infection, all neg. Also tested for HSV (igg/igm) negative. Igg came back hsv1 = 0.05 hsv2 = 0.13. Dr said he saw no sign of herpes type lesions.
My doctor said its very unusual to have outbreaks all the time on medication. She has prescribed Famvir for me now. Can you tell me if this is normal?
Have you been tested for bacterial vaginosis, yeast and group b strep? I know group b strep is a routine test during pregnancy, but you might want to check the others.
I don't know about famvir and pregnancy, but I've asked a friend from the herpes forum to check this thread out, so maybe she'll have some better answers.
I do. I have for years but have never had this problem. Possibly I'm just more sensitive with the HSV? They called in Famvir for me to start but I think I might take a medication vacation for a few days. If I start showing sx of an outbreak, I'll go get the Famvir. I've read that Famvir isn't as effective at suppressing viral shedding as Valtrex. I'm not in a relationship right now, so that's not a pressing issue, I just like being informed.
In the following years (2007-2009) i have only had 3-4 outbreaks. when i get an outbreak i use famvir, 2 tablets at first then 1 every 12 hours for 3 doses. these always worked quickly and the outbreaks were never severe and didn't last longer than a week or so start to finish.
In the last 2 weeks (jan 2010) i had a small outbreak that i immediately took my usual dose of famvir for and it cleared up, almost totally within 5-7 days.
I just wanted to know what are the symptoms of herpes if it occurs inside urethra of men or does it occur inside urethra, as i have been through chamdlya test which came out negative a urine culture which also came normal and a urethra swab for culture test which also came negative then the urologist treated me with rociphin 2g iv for 7 days but then after 7 months suddenly on my penis herpes simplex has occured which is now been treated with zovirax 10g ointment and famvir 250mg oral tablets.
Hi, low positive for hsv2 and a retest of negative could be conclusive. The culture for positive is very accurate and the negative blood for hsv1 would mean it missed it as even the best tests miss 10% or it was taken too soon to show antibodies.
I hope someone can help. I've had horrible recurring pain in my right eye for over a year. Went to Optho. multiple times and was told it was an infected oil gland. I was put on low dose antibiotics for over 6 months and told to apply warm compresses and scrub eye with a baby shampoo/water solution.
I developed a rash on my buttocks months into this that my GP diagnosed as shingles and prescribed Famvir.
It should've been 2 500mg famvir tablets to take 2x/day for 1 day. Is that what you were given or just 1 500mg pill?
d like for us to be able to have oral sex, but not if it will further spread the virus. We are both taking Famvir daily and almost never have outbreaks. I also know that it is possible to spread the virus without an outbreak. Please don't suggest condoms or dental dams - I'd rather just skip it altogether. Also, I know that prophylactics often don't protect against spreading the virus.
I do experience these side effects when I take the medicine during an outbreak, but I can endure for one week every 3 months.
Anyone else experience the same? Any advice?

i doubt you have developed a tolerance for famvir. I believe cortisone can affect the immune system, and it's very probable that it's causing an ob. The sores in your mouth may be cankers, which are related to stress and immune system overload.
Talk to your doc and see if you can get off that cortisone!
i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.
Has anyone had better results with Famvir? And does it help suppress transmission like Valtrex does? My Dr thinks the Valtrex might be causing my hair loss so I am switching....
Also my doctor prescribed famvir but I don't have genital herpes. Can Famvir help with penis pain?
I have severe atrophic vaginitis and a history of genital ulceration with odd tingly-burny-itchies for many years. Despite this, I have had a positive test for HSV-2 (2004), followed by a negative western blot about 6+/- mths after my only possible exposure, and at least one additional negative HerpeSelect almost 3 years later.
You are contagious from the area of the lesions when you have them as well as the virus is shedding from the anal/genital area too during active lesions. in between obvious recurrences, the virus sheds periodically from the anal/genital area.
we don't have studies on famvir reducing transmission to a partner. we assume that since all 3 antivirals for herpes reduce shedding about the same that being on any herpes antiviral would reduce the risk of transmission to a partner in general.

Will I get my WB results this week? My gf tested last week negative again at 15 weeks. It was herpselect vs elisa. Not sure which is better. She had been doing ELISA.
My issues continue. Urology says he's not sure what is wrong. Derm dr says he is confused as well. Since stopping famvir last week I'm worse with pain and redness on penis. The opening is irritated often and I'm having clear discharge.
These symptoms are the same as the past 4 months.
