Famvir is now 1 day dosing for episodic therapy. It's 1gm 2x/day for 1 day ( or 2 500mg tablets at a time ).
It's hard to tell why the ob came back so quickly - that happens sometimes. If you get a 3rd within the next month I"d follow up with your provider to make sure it's only herpes going on and not something else like a bacterial skin infection or even a whopper of a case of jock itch or something.
At first I was getting cold sores about every 4 to 6 weeks. I then started taking 500 mg of Valtrex daily for suppression therapy. This seemed to reduce the frequency of my outbreaks to about once every 2 to 3 months. To save money, my insurance switched me to acyclovir (400 mg twice a day) with similar results as the Valtrex. Then starting about 3 months ago, I began to have outbreaks every two weeks even with the suppression therapy.

I have a lot of friends and family with cold sores, and none of them have ever gone this long with persistent recurrences. Maybe I'm an exception, but I feel that I'm healthy enough to warrant investigating further possibilities....I just don't know what they may be?? Could this be something bacterial? If the swab comes back positive, should I keep up this neverending wait? Try new medicine?

Valtrex has been recognized to be useful in both Genital Herpes as well as Cold sores. However, it id not approved for suppression of Cold sores as you have asked. Therefore you may not take this drug in a such fashion.
Cold sores are also known as Herpes Labialis and are caused by reactivation of latent Herpes viruses.

Thank you for your response. I might add he did put his genital in me for a few seconds but made him get out quick. He promises he doesn't have anything and I didn't see any sores at the time either.
Quick question, my doc logged my results on her patient portal where I am able to see. It says negative for HSV-1 and negative for HSV-2, but when her office called me they said I was positive for "cold sores". Could I have cold sores and not have HSV-1?
Like I said, at this point I'd just wait and repeat the hsv2 igg in 2 months and see what it is then. Just post your results here then in this post ( everytime you add to your post it bumps it back up to the top to be seen again ) and I can help you see if you need more testing or not.
Hang in there - I know these aren't fast and easy answers but in a few months you'll have more completely answers as to your genital herpes status.
She did start to get cold sores not long after an episode where we kissed and I still had a cold sore, and has had them ever since off and on consistent with the triggers that can bring on HSV1 outbreaks. I believe that she has also been diagnosed, and they respond to Famvir. Anyway, thanks for the advice and here's keeping our fingers crossed.
Talk to your provider about having herpes antivirals on hand to treat cold sores at the very first sign of a tingle of getting one . Valtrex and famvir are 1 day treatments and acyclovir is 2 days. Easier and more effective and potentially even cheaper ( acyclovir is $4 at walmart for 30 200mg pills with a prescription ).

In the following years (2007-2009) i have only had 3-4 outbreaks. when i get an outbreak i use famvir, 2 tablets at first then 1 every 12 hours for 3 doses. these always worked quickly and the outbreaks were never severe and didn't last longer than a week or so start to finish.
In the last 2 weeks (jan 2010) i had a small outbreak that i immediately took my usual dose of famvir for and it cleared up, almost totally within 5-7 days.
I'm on famvir for suppression, I had a cultural swab done a year ago at a clinic, I pretty well knew I had contracted the virus because the initial outbreak was crucial. The babies father knows of me having it, and got tested his hsv1 and 2 have came back negative.
I thought I need to know what type.I went and got a blood test that was pos.for hsv1(I have a history of cold sore)neg for hsv2(I also had a neg test in mid august)I also had the area swabbed twice both neg.for the next 7months I have had almost non stop sores.on the roof gums cheek tounge floor.at the end of feb had another hsv2 test neg.I've seen many doctors dentist oral surgen who biopsed a sore on the roof of my mouth.
