I have a lot of friends and family with cold sores, and none of them have ever gone this long with persistent recurrences. Maybe I'm an exception, but I feel that I'm healthy enough to warrant investigating further possibilities....I just don't know what they may be?? Could this be something bacterial? If the swab comes back positive, should I keep up this neverending wait? Try new medicine?

At first I was getting cold sores about every 4 to 6 weeks. I then started taking 500 mg of Valtrex daily for suppression therapy. This seemed to reduce the frequency of my outbreaks to about once every 2 to 3 months. To save money, my insurance switched me to acyclovir (400 mg twice a day) with similar results as the Valtrex. Then starting about 3 months ago, I began to have outbreaks every two weeks even with the suppression therapy.
HSV-2 hardly ever causes cold sores and when it does it rarely recurs. Finally for lesions to occur in place where there was no contact makes herpes almost certainly not the issue. AS I said before, you need to stop worrying and take care of the problem. The way to do that is to seek evaluation. Again as I said, in your case if the rash is still there, I would think a dermatologist would be the best bet.
I was so healthy for a few months I was thinking of getting off the famvir, but then cold weather hit and I have been sick on and off for about two months now (Sept and Oct). But I still get lesions and they don't culture them all, just once every few years to be certain. Maybe I received a viral strain that is particularly virulent, as my doc suggests. Or maybe I got something else along with the HSV - I don't know.
Thank you for your response. I might add he did put his genital in me for a few seconds but made him get out quick. He promises he doesn't have anything and I didn't see any sores at the time either.
Quick question, my doc logged my results on her patient portal where I am able to see. It says negative for HSV-1 and negative for HSV-2, but when her office called me they said I was positive for "cold sores". Could I have cold sores and not have HSV-1?
She did start to get cold sores not long after an episode where we kissed and I still had a cold sore, and has had them ever since off and on consistent with the triggers that can bring on HSV1 outbreaks. I believe that she has also been diagnosed, and they respond to Famvir. Anyway, thanks for the advice and here's keeping our fingers crossed.
Sometimes the cold sores stay away for six months or more. In this instance the initial cold sore experience took about two weeks from start to clear and I had about five days of clarity and it came back much worse.
When I initially went in and started getting my prescription for acyclovir they mentioned I might eventually need to start a daily supressive therapy, but I was relying on them to tell me when I was starting to have them more often.
Talk to your provider about having herpes antivirals on hand to treat cold sores at the very first sign of a tingle of getting one . Valtrex and famvir are 1 day treatments and acyclovir is 2 days. Easier and more effective and potentially even cheaper ( acyclovir is $4 at walmart for 30 200mg pills with a prescription ).

I thought I need to know what type.I went and got a blood test that was pos.for hsv1(I have a history of cold sore)neg for hsv2(I also had a neg test in mid august)I also had the area swabbed twice both neg.for the next 7months I have had almost non stop sores.on the roof gums cheek tounge floor.at the end of feb had another hsv2 test neg.I've seen many doctors dentist oral surgen who biopsed a sore on the roof of my mouth.
