If it was a canker sore, why did it react to the Famvir? Does Famvir still have an effect on canker sores then, as well as cold sores? Am I contagious? Was I ever contagious? And can I actually kiss my husband again? Thanks for any advice! Much appreciated.

Finally, in your experience does any of the antivirals work better than the others and are the dosages the same for genital HSV as for oral (I ask because the dosage my PCP prescribed was based the dosage for genital HSV?) Thank yoy again.

For cold sores the famvir dose is 1500 mg once as soon as you notice the start of a cold sore. All the herpes antivirals only help to speed the healing of a cold sore by a few days on average but it shortens the duration of shedding as well in many folks if you take it soon enough, can even ward off a full blown cold sore. Probably you are fighting off another viral infection that triggered the cold sore from the sounds of things.

Thank you for your response. I might add he did put his genital in me for a few seconds but made him get out quick. He promises he doesn't have anything and I didn't see any sores at the time either. Quick question, my doc logged my results on her patient portal where I am able to see. It says negative for HSV-1 and negative for HSV-2, but when her office called me they said I was positive for "cold sores". Could I have cold sores and not have HSV-1?

She did start to get cold sores not long after an episode where we kissed and I still had a cold sore, and has had them ever since off and on consistent with the triggers that can bring on HSV1 outbreaks. I had several outbreaks even being on this med (mostly cold sores for me) but the doctors were not that concerned, they just upped the dose to the treatment dose (two pills instead of one for a few days)
