I am currently in a long term relationship, fully disclosed sexual history - but I am resisting suppression therapy. In a previous relationship I tried this for a year and found the side effects to be horrible - confusion, anxiety, agitation, poor typing skills, eye-blinking and muscle flickering.
I want to avoid passing the virus to my partner, but I cannot live a happy life with the side effects of Accyclovir.
low platelets increase risk for bleeding. If not monitored, detected and reversed, these complications can be fatal. Fortunately, side-effects can usually be reversed by stopping the Valcyte or by lowering its dose.
In addition to those side effects, I'm also concerned about the effect that Valcyte would have on the immune system.
I know this could be caused by herpes virus as I have spoke with many people on similar sites suffering from what is described as post herpetic neuralgia. I have been on famvir suppressively and the symptoms have subsided, since my test results have been negative I stopped the famvir and the symptoms returned. My question is what other virus can cause these symptoms and is famvir effective against any other viruses other than herpes?
If you are looking to reduce transmission to partners, the only known ways to reduce that are to use antivirals (Valtrex, acyclovir, famvir) and condoms, along with avoiding sexual activity when you have any symptoms.
If you are looking to reduce outbreaks, studies are mixed for this.

Two weeks ago, I felt and saw redness, lumpiness and then a whitish sore that I associate with cold sores and hurriedly bolted down 1500mg of Famvir. But the sore/lesion seems to have been on the inside of my lip (the moist inner mouth), and not on my skin. Stupidly I didn't think of this til later. I think, in my panic, I just went for the meds as the easy solution without thinking.
Some folks do have pain from valtrex and getting less acyclovir in the actual acyclovir pill controls your herpes without causing you as many side effects. You were given a higher dose of valtrex than you needed to initially treat your herpes and if you are sensitive to it, might take you a bit to get past the side effects. You only ever needed 1 gm twice a day initially. recurrences are treated with 500mg twice a day for 3 days.
so what do you do now? well the choice is yours.
I too had side effects such as fatigue, extreme selectivity to taste and smell and aggression and then other side effects appeared on my second round of antiviral that were not classified as side effects by my doctor, but stopped once I was off Valtrex after 7 days. These other side effects were memory loss and cognitive difficulty, slurring speech, liver pain, and momentary "blips" or blackouts.These disappeared within a few days of being off the antiviral.
No evidence of fluid or pus. Thought it me be a viral infection and put me on Famvir 500mlgs.2 times a day. No luck with the pain. Then i was put on prednisone for the next round.Again did not remotely touch the pain. i have realized that the pain is seemingly behind my ear and my neck/node in area feels tender. When I am not dosing myself with ibuprophen( I was taking percocet at night but hated the side effects ) I am acutely aware now of pain in the neck in a localized area; below my ear.
I used to only get an outbreak every 8-12 months, however since I started working full-time I have had 3 outbreaks in less than 2 months. I take famvir 2x250mg at first then 1 tablet every 12 hours for 3 doses and the outbreaks clear up within a week, but it is really starting to get me down and depressed.
My questions are:
1) Can recurrent herpes outbreaks lead to penile cancer? I am worried if the same area is affected by HSV a lot then could it cause cancer there?
1gram makes me feel hung over the next day. Valtrex is a very good drug but for me there are many side effects. I do not have any side effects on Famvir.
There - now you know my life story '-) I sued the man I contracted this virus from and we settled out of court. This was a serious life changing event for me and I have been through hell. Lying about your character and your H status is unacceptable. People have the right to sue and they do.
s awful going through the trial and error of finding things that work, but maybe if valtrex or acyclovir works, it will help focus on what other side effects (and I don't know what you're having, so I don't mean to minimize them) you can live with, and which ones you can't on each med.

I am also on Valtrex and I continue to get outbreaks but they last for a few days and then go away for weeks, sometimes months before I get another. My spouse who also has herpes does not take an antiviral so that is why I believe I still get my outbreaks. Are you still engaging in intercourse while having outbreaks, maybe that is whey they aren't getting better. Also, I'm not sure what famvir is, but maybe it is stronger than Valtrex and will help you.
I got huge bold patch too, this is terrible.
Yes, getting her tested is the big priority right now. I don't use Famvir for suppression, mostly I use acyclovir twice a day or valacyclovir once per day. Diarrhea could definitely be a side effect of Famvir.
