Common Questions and Answers about Famvir and pregnancy

famvir

Avatar m tn I know this could be caused by herpes virus as I have spoke with many people on similar sites suffering from what is described as post herpetic neuralgia. I have been on famvir suppressively and the symptoms have subsided, since my test results have been negative I stopped the famvir and the symptoms returned. My question is what other virus can cause these symptoms and is famvir effective against any other viruses other than herpes?
Avatar f tn Two weeks ago, I felt and saw redness, lumpiness and then a whitish sore that I associate with cold sores and hurriedly bolted down 1500mg of Famvir. But the sore/lesion seems to have been on the inside of my lip (the moist inner mouth), and not on my skin. Stupidly I didn't think of this til later. I think, in my panic, I just went for the meds as the easy solution without thinking.
Avatar f tn I don't think we have info on famvir dosing during pregnancy. We recommend the higher immunosuppression doses of valtrex and acyclovir during the last month of pregnancy. Your body is naturally immunosuppressed during pregnancy so it takes the higher doses to better control the virus. since you were infected with hsv2 prior to pregnancy, the odds of transmission to your baby during birth are less than 1% as long as you don't have any obvious symptoms during delivery.
Avatar f tn I was on valtrex for awhile and my hair was thinning so now I am on Famvir I was wondering if anyone has noticed hair loss with this drug? And is hair loss common with antivirals?
Avatar n tn I am also on Valtrex and I continue to get outbreaks but they last for a few days and then go away for weeks, sometimes months before I get another. My spouse who also has herpes does not take an antiviral so that is why I believe I still get my outbreaks. Are you still engaging in intercourse while having outbreaks, maybe that is whey they aren't getting better. Also, I'm not sure what famvir is, but maybe it is stronger than Valtrex and will help you.
Avatar m tn In the last 2 weeks (jan 2010) i had a small outbreak that i immediately took my usual dose of famvir for and it cleared up, almost totally within 5-7 days. that period was from friday 15th jan until the following weekend. however today, 24th jan, a week since my last outbreak, the herpes has come back in exactly the same place and same symptoms as last week! this has never happened before with only 3-4 outbreaks in 3 years, and now 2 in less than 2 weeks! how can this happen?!
651674 tn?1224452312 For cold sores the famvir dose is 1500 mg once as soon as you notice the start of a cold sore. All the herpes antivirals only help to speed the healing of a cold sore by a few days on average but it shortens the duration of shedding as well in many folks if you take it soon enough, can even ward off a full blown cold sore. Probably you are fighting off another viral infection that triggered the cold sore from the sounds of things.
Avatar n tn I am eight weeks pregnant and developing a coldsore. Can I take anything? I usually take Famvir when one starts to develop. What else can I do to stop it?
Avatar f tn I hope someone can help. I've had horrible recurring pain in my right eye for over a year. Went to Optho. multiple times and was told it was an infected oil gland. I was put on low dose antibiotics for over 6 months and told to apply warm compresses and scrub eye with a baby shampoo/water solution. I developed a rash on my buttocks months into this that my GP diagnosed as shingles and prescribed Famvir.
Avatar m tn No real outbreaks before this. I went to family doctor and he gave me 500 mg famciclovir. Sores scabed and went away after 1 week. Now the blisters are back in the same place. He has given me zovirax this time. Do outbreaks happen so close together? After 10 years without ant noticeable outbreaks now I have 2 in 2 months? Thanks.
Avatar n tn d like for us to be able to have oral sex, but not if it will further spread the virus. We are both taking Famvir daily and almost never have outbreaks. I also know that it is possible to spread the virus without an outbreak. Please don't suggest condoms or dental dams - I'd rather just skip it altogether. Also, I know that prophylactics often don't protect against spreading the virus.
Avatar f tn If you are looking to reduce transmission to partners, the only known ways to reduce that are to use antivirals (Valtrex, acyclovir, famvir) and condoms, along with avoiding sexual activity when you have any symptoms. If you are looking to reduce outbreaks, studies are mixed for this. Here's a very small study that showed promise - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3115841 Here's one that showed a reduction in recurrences, but not in healing time - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar f tn My phys assistant says herpes over the phone, told me to increase famvir and use an acyclovir cream. I am still waiting to see if there is a result.
Avatar n tn i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had better results with Famvir? And does it help suppress transmission like Valtrex does? My Dr thinks the Valtrex might be causing my hair loss so I am switching....
Avatar n tn Actually Dr the Famvir has helped with the pain so maybe it was something similar to a viral infection. But I called my doc yesterday and I my chlamydia and herpes test came back negative. He also has referred me to a dermatologist. Thanks for your feedback!
Avatar m tn Been tested and results are positive for HSV. Also getting zoster herpes. Taking FAMVIR 125 mg x 2 and/or zovirax (400mg x 2) every day as preventative but it is not working. Why is this not working anymore? What could be triggering this? Could I have another sickness causing this? I am getting desperate now. Doctors are just telllng me to take zovirax and disbelieve me. I will go and see a specialist again but is there anything that can be done except for taking these drugs?
Avatar n tn I was not comfortable with the dr so i went to see another one, he prescribed me famvir and told me to come back in 6 weeks for testing for herpes, though he saw nothing he could culture or anything indicative of herpes. The famvir relieved my symptoms though every time i go off it i get about 5 days of relief before symptoms start to come back. I also have had general (and painful) adenopathy since early feb. but dr dismissed it as no big deal.
Avatar m tn I have type 1 hsv genital and oral. I had sex with a girl 2 weeks ago (wore a condom) and took 1000 mg of famvir that night after sex and the next 3 days. I don't think she is being honest with me about type 2. I have had 4-5 days of grueling lumbar and buttocks pain just a week after sex. I can't even stand straight. I now feel warm and I have a headache. Same stuff I had in my initial OB 5 years ago. I'm so scared. My legs feel weak and I am in shock.
Avatar n tn Research has found that when taken suppressively - valtrex delays the return of viral shedding a little longer than famvir and it also works better in infected folks who aren't having obvious recurrences of herpes. It also only has to be taken once a day which is a bonus for suppressive therapy long term. Both acyclovir and famvir need to be taken twice daily for suppressive therapy ( acyclovir is 3x/day for ob's and famvir is still 2x/day for ob's ).
Avatar f tn If valtrex is too pricey for you on your insurance - look into famvir or acyclovir - both are available as a cheaper generic and is usually more affordable with insurances. If you've never read the herpes handbook before I suggest you give it a read. It has more info on treatments for further reading - www.westoverheights.com.
