Common Questions and Answers about Famvir and herpes

famvir

Avatar m tn I know this could be caused by herpes virus as I have spoke with many people on similar sites suffering from what is described as post herpetic neuralgia. I have been on famvir suppressively and the symptoms have subsided, since my test results have been negative I stopped the famvir and the symptoms returned. My question is what other virus can cause these symptoms and is famvir effective against any other viruses other than herpes?
Avatar m tn t have any visible symptoms and i perform oral sex on her, am i at risk of getting herpes in/on my mouth? Is it possible to get HSV-2 orally? If so and i take my tablets (famvir), will that help get rid of the herpes if i had it in/on my mouth area?
Avatar m tn t know what herpes expert you are talking about, but starting Famvir at day 14 after contact would have absolutely no impact on contracting herpes. If you had come in direct contact with herpes and had taken the Famvir within an hour or two for several days, then maybe, yes. Yes, a western blot at 16 weeks would be conclusive but will likely not be different than results now. The western blot picks up more HSV 1 than the ELISA does.
Avatar m tn I am 23 years old and I was diagnosed with herpes type 2 in 2007. at the time i had my first outbreak around 10 days after being with the girl i was with back then. i then went to a clinic and had a swab test that confirmed it was HSV-2. In the following years (2007-2009) i have only had 3-4 outbreaks. when i get an outbreak i use famvir, 2 tablets at first then 1 every 12 hours for 3 doses.
Avatar f tn My phys assistant says herpes over the phone, told me to increase famvir and use an acyclovir cream. I am still waiting to see if there is a result.
Avatar n tn I am also on Valtrex and I continue to get outbreaks but they last for a few days and then go away for weeks, sometimes months before I get another. My spouse who also has herpes does not take an antiviral so that is why I believe I still get my outbreaks. Are you still engaging in intercourse while having outbreaks, maybe that is whey they aren't getting better. Also, I'm not sure what famvir is, but maybe it is stronger than Valtrex and will help you.
Avatar n tn Both my husband and I have had genital herpes (HSV 2) for over 10 yrs. (Diagnosed w/blood tests.) (He infected me and didn't know that was what he had prior to me being tested.) We have always avoided oral sex b/c I am afraid that we could spread the herpes virus from genitals to mouth or throat or internal organs. I'd like for us to be able to have oral sex, but not if it will further spread the virus. We are both taking Famvir daily and almost never have outbreaks.
651674 tn?1224452312 Sorry, but i just want to know if a herpes outbreak (HSV-1) can cause lymph nodes swelling...coz the other day i had a herpes outbreak and the lymphnodes on both sides of my neck became swollen and just want to know if the outbreak can be the cause. Thanks alot...
Avatar m tn Famvir is now 1 day dosing for episodic therapy. It's 1gm 2x/day for 1 day ( or 2 500mg tablets at a time ). It's hard to tell why the ob came back so quickly - that happens sometimes. If you get a 3rd within the next month I"d follow up with your provider to make sure it's only herpes going on and not something else like a bacterial skin infection or even a whopper of a case of jock itch or something.
Avatar n tn Hello, Famvir is an antiviral drug used for viral infections like herpes. Sometimes blisters of herpes are often preceded by tingling and pain and your doctor may be suspecting it to be the start of herpes infection, hence he has prescribed this drug. I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
Avatar n tn i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.
Avatar m tn Been tested and results are positive for HSV. Also getting zoster herpes. Taking FAMVIR 125 mg x 2 and/or zovirax (400mg x 2) every day as preventative but it is not working. Why is this not working anymore? What could be triggering this? Could I have another sickness causing this? I am getting desperate now. Doctors are just telllng me to take zovirax and disbelieve me. I will go and see a specialist again but is there anything that can be done except for taking these drugs?
Avatar n tn Definitely the next step is getting your man tested for herpes. He'll need a type specific herpes igg blood test for hsv1 and hsv2. Once you know his status then you can better decide what precautions to take together ( if any ). Just to err on the side of caution - I'd call the clinic and ask them if they can mail you a copy of your herpes lesion culture results. The other option is to ask for a clinic nurse there to go over it with you.
Avatar m tn But like 15 days from now before i had this occurence on the head and joined part of the penis these 3-4 watery bumps i went to some other dermatologist he couldnt diagnosed it and suggested me to take Augmentin 625mg antibiotique for 5 days course and to apply Fucidin -H cream and in 5 days that outbreak was gone but suddenly like yesterdays it had again outbreaked and this time i went to the other specialist and now he has given me zovirax 10g ointment to applicate on the outbreak and famvi
Avatar n tn Bv is asymptomatic 50% of the time in females but it can cause herpes to be more active and until you treat it and clear that up, your herpes will continue to give you a hard time and keep reoccurring frequently. Same as many other things can look like herpes but really are not. I know it's a pain but be seen monthly as needed to get to the bottom of all of this! Famvir, acyclovir and valtrex all work about the same.
Avatar m tn Hi I have had herpes for the past 6 years and me and my boyfriend are trying to have a baby but we ALWAYS have sex with a condom because I do not want him to get herpes.
Avatar m tn She did not bother to take a culture for strep or herpes. She just prescribed the zithromax antibiotics and famvir and told me if the famvir doesn't help then she will recommend a throat specialist for them to take a look at. When I had done the Std testing I was tested for hiv, herpes 1&2, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphillis.
Avatar f tn If valtrex is too pricey for you on your insurance - look into famvir or acyclovir - both are available as a cheaper generic and is usually more affordable with insurances. If you've never read the herpes handbook before I suggest you give it a read. It has more info on treatments for further reading - www.westoverheights.com.
Avatar n tn What mad eyou start suppressive therapy? You might want to consider switching to acyclovir or famvir instead and see if you do better on either of those. You can even start off at a low, subtheraputic dose and gradually increase your dose over the course of 2-3 weeks and see if you tolerate that better too.
Avatar f tn You were given a higher dose of valtrex than you needed to initially treat your herpes and if you are sensitive to it, might take you a bit to get past the side effects. You only ever needed 1 gm twice a day initially. recurrences are treated with 500mg twice a day for 3 days. so what do you do now? well the choice is yours. You never, ever, EVER have to treat your herpes if you don't want to.
Avatar m tn 3 months later i had a herpes outbreak (i know it was herpes this time, classic symptoms) and again i took famvir and it cleared up within a week or so. that was in january 2009, and now its june and i have had another herpes outbreak. the reason i am saying all this is because, after a year of having no outbreaks after the initial one, i have had 2-3 in the space of 9 months, and all after recieving unprotected oral sex from a prostitute.
Avatar m tn 1) Can recurrent herpes outbreaks lead to penile cancer? I am worried if the same area is affected by HSV a lot then could it cause cancer there? 2) Should I consider a daily treatment to keep the outbreaks under control instead of treating the outbreaks when they occur? 3) If I started taking famvir or equivalent regularly as a preventative then as I am only 23 can this cause any long term effects or dependency on the drug?
