Avatar m tn Around ten days after my IGM results i developed a rash on my back and went to the doctor and he diagnosed me with shingles and gave me famcyclovir. i waited eighty days after my possible exposure at the gentlemans club and took an Herpes immunoassay gG2 test for herpes 2 and it came back negative. My question is could the famcyclovir that i took 6 1/2 weeks before my herpes 2 test have effected my test results where i could have got false negative or it wouldnt have effected my antibodies ?
Avatar n tn Antiviral prescription medications such as FAMVIR® (famciclovir) can help reduce your symptoms and help shingles blisters heal faster. However, the medication should be started within 72 hours (3 days) after the rash of shingles appears, so it is important to see your doctor right away. Without treatment, the symptoms of shingles (eg, rash, blisters, and pain) usually go away in about 3 to 5 weeks.
Avatar m tn My doctor did diagnose me with shingles and put me on famciclovir. The shingles were on the back, right side of my neck. My lymph nodes in that area were swollen and tender along with my neck muscles going down towards my right shoulder. After about 6 days, almost all the symptoms I described have disappeared. I was also tested for HIV. The test results came back non-reactive.
Avatar n tn Many people get shingles and a fair number get it twice. You do not need to think that two episodes of shingles means you have HIV. What to do. There are several unknowns and, as you acknowledge, you are anxious about this. Get tested at about 8 weeks, A negative result at that time can be taken as solid evidence that you did not get HIV. No need for earlier testing and no reason to worry much while waiting for the 8 week point to arrive - your risk is very low.
Avatar f tn It may just be that the nerves are still inflamed. I know with PHN after shingles, they recommend corticosteroids (either orally, like predinisone, or a shot), or a tricyclic antidepressant like amiltryptiline, like you are on, but there are others that you could try. Does an ice pack help? Honestly, I'm not sure if that would help or further irritate things, but I'd try that over heat to start with. It may provide at least temporary relief.
Avatar m tn Several studies in humans and mice provide evidence that treatment with the antiviral drug Famciclovir soon after the first infection with herpes can significantly lower the chance of future symptomatic outbreaks of herpes. Use of Famciclovir in this manner has been shown to reduce the amount of latent herpes virus in the neural ganglia.[5][6][7] A review of human subjects treated for five days with Famciclovir 250 mg three times daily during their first herpes episode found that only 4.
Avatar f tn A week after contact I started experiencing numbness and an odd sensation on my fingertip. I immediately started famciclovir the next day (8 days post potential exposure) My finger still feels numb/ slightly cold/ very mildly swollen with red spots and hyperaensitivity at the tip (havent been touching anything with that finger) which is 1.5 weeks. I got a fever a few days ago which was 1 week after I felt potential symptoms and 2 weeks post potential exposure.
Avatar m tn The typical one sided rash and numbness can occur with Shingles, also known as Herpes Zoster or Zoster. It is a medical condition characterized by the development of painful blisters on the skin and numbness or odd sensations in the nerve involved. Zoster is caused by the 'Varicella Zoster Virus' which is also responsible for causing chickenpox. The virus can lie dormant and can get reactivated at intervals producing symptoms. Hence there is no permanent cure.
Avatar n tn So to be sure, he did a swab test that came back negative. He prescribed me famciclovir. After 3 weeks, the lesions were still there but smaller. So I went back at the clinic to see the same doctor. He made another swab test and the result was still negative (but I had take famciclovir 1 or 2 weeks before). The doctor didn't give me something else. He told me to take famciclovir for a second time. In total, lesions lasted for almost 4 weeks. No crust at anytime was formed.
Avatar m tn When I started prophylactic treatment with acyclovir, I saw a reduced occurrence for a few months, then they came back to about 4-5 outbreaks/year. I recently switched prophylactic medication from acyclovir to famciclovir, and had a 18-month period free from outbreak. Come yesterday, I had another terrible outbreak (worse than usual)... will these become more commonplace now? Is this a sign of HSV-resistance to the drug? Are there any other courses of action I can consider?
Avatar f tn I have had oral sex with my partner who has Genital Herpes 2 and I thought we did everything 'right' in preventing it being passed on to me. He hasn't had it for some time. I now have burning when going to the toilet, incredibly itchy skin and a few 'sore'. My doctor has taken a swab and is getting tested and gave my the 3 day internal canisten cream and i'm on tablets...Famciclovir 250mg twice a day. I've tried Vagisal....no go. I've tried Eylocaine Jelly...
Avatar m tn Just 1 week before sexual exposure, I had finished taking Famciclovir 250mg for HSV-1 outbreak. And it cured. After 123 days(4 months) from last risky sexual exposure and 130 days from FAMCICLOVIR completion, I took HSV2(IGM and IGG) test and it turned out negative. I did not got any symptoms on genital area. Can I consider this as confirmatory for HSV-2 in my body? Should I need to go for more test? if so when to take the test? It is 4 months now completed from risk.
Avatar m tn I've had HSV-1 since my college days. 15-20 years or so. I get outbreaks on and near my lips every few months, but after going on antivirals (Famciclovir 250 mg 2x/day) it's been lessened. My first question, being: if I have had the virus for this long, is there still a chance of me cross-contaminating myself with my own infection to other parts of MY body? (e.g., it's on lips to moving to my eyes, or hands, etc.
Avatar m tn But anti-viral medications like acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir are known to shorten out breaks and improve symptoms. It depends on one’s immunity also. If it is good the person may have less number of reactivations. If the immunity is relative less than he is likely to have more symptoms. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Avatar n tn even though i have read that these drugs are not effective Hello, To prevent frequent recurrence of genital warts, one can take medicines like Acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir. This is known as suppressive therapy and is very much effective in preventing recurrences. My advice is to consult a dermatologist and get it prescribed. I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep us posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.
