Fainting during blood draw

Common Questions and Answers about Fainting during blood draw

fainting

Avatar n tn It the letter they said not to drink anything even water but when I got to the hospital for the test I almost fainted during the 2nd blood test and they told me then that water was ok to drink. Don't stress yourself about it, pick up a phone and ask your midwife. It's not a silly question and having sleepless night because of it it's not good for you and the baby.
Avatar f tn The blood is taken out and not injected inside you while drawing blood. Dont complicate things .if there was blood in the syringe you might have known rite?and most of the labs use new syringes for drawing blood. Please move on!!!!
Avatar n tn I would ask her doctor and see if he will perform an A1c test, that is just a simple blood draw that sees what the sugar levels have been doing for the last 3 months. He probably should also do some other blood work such as a CBC and SMAC to make sure there are no other issues. I hope she feels better soon.
Avatar f tn The nurse who drew my blood had on gloves, however she cleaned a blood stain from the tin she used to hold the blood vials and other items she needed for my blood draw. She used a alcohol wipe, but did not change her glove(she did throw the used wipe away). Now, I know the gloves are ppe and really for the nurse to protect herself. My concern is that after she cleaned the spot, she used a new wipe to clean my arm and then she then touched my arm to prepare my vein with her gloved hand.
Avatar f tn s not a clinical reason that your blood pressure is dropping drastically. It can be normal, but excessive fainting and weakness needs to be checked out immediately. I wouldn't worry, most likely it's just something about your body having trouble adjusting to this part of pregnancy, but you need to be seen to find out why, because it CAN be an indicator of pregnancy-related complications.
1448936 tn?1363206346 I work in a hospital and draw blood from patients at least 5 or 6 times a day. I deal with people who don't mind it at all, people who have a mild anxiety about it and those that nearly have to be in restraints and are at risk of actually fainting. I'm sorry, but I had to laugh a little when you said they took "quite a bit of blood." Even when it's necessary to draw 4 tubes of blood, the actual amount of blood is quite insignificant.
Avatar f tn As nurse had a failed blood draw attempt 1a) all I want to ask what PREVENTS blood from previous patient from flowing /injected back into the needle that’s inserted into my vein from the blood collection tube during blood draw if nurse made an accidental attempt during blood draw ? And why it’s no risk for hiv ?
Avatar f tn What are some reasons a blood draw would hurt? The nurse pierced my skin and it hurt very bad. Also, my arms was bleeding a lot at the puncture site.
Avatar n tn She was not able to draw blood with that needle so she took out a new one and tried again. With that she still wasn't able so she called in anoher nurse to try and that nurse succeeded but with a butterfly attached to a syringe. My question is , do you think it was ok that the butterfly needle was already out of the package. Is this a standard to set up and unpackage without the patient? Also why was there no tube holder ?
Avatar m tn Hello. I had what I consider would be a rather scary blood draw. I have had HIV anxiety and this test was supposed to help me with that (tested neg). I have also posted in the anxiety forum, but thought this would be more specific. The phlebotomist used a vacutainer/straight needle (not sure if new). She tied a tourniquet real tight and swabbed. Then she inserted the needle followed by a vacutainer, and nothing! She removed needle and discarded the vacutainer (not the needle).
Avatar f tn The nurse can draw blood at the same time but into separate vials to test what the doctor orders. The doctor may order a glucose test to find out if your daughter has diabetes. Ensure that your daughter eats regular meals and healthy snacks in between (fruit or veg). Cut out or cut down on very refined foods, biscuits, chocolates, white bread, fizzy drinks etc. Dark green vegetables, kidney and liver contain lots of iron. If she sticks to a healthy diet that will help.
Avatar f tn Generally the fainting is due to anemia or vaso-vagal attack following low blood volume. Please drink plenty of fluids during this time. Get your hemoglobin level checked. Take a good multivitamin for a few months. Consult a gynecologist. Sometimes a hormone therapy is needed to control the painful heavy periods. At times it is due to endometriosis, ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids. In some cases it is hereditary. Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage.
Avatar n tn the first time i faint was on my first day in Gym, which the coach assured me its natural ! then after few weeks i got a feeling that i can't take my breath to the max capacity of my lungs but those symptoms went away after a couple of weeks ..
Avatar f tn I fainted at a train station, did my usual throwing up thing but I didn’t really come round from the fainting for a good hour. So an ambulance was called and after not being able to wake me and my blood pressure being ‘in my boots’ as they called it, they rushed me to hospital. Though of course by the time I was seen (4 hour wait) I was absolutely fine desperate for something to eat. The only thing they could advise was when I got home I should see a gynaecologist.
Avatar m tn Last week my husband donated blood to the Red Cross and at first puncture, the blood clotted. The needle was reinserted deeper, but the technician was only able to draw a half pint. What does this mean? He takes daily aspirin and no blood thinners. He is 72 yrs old.
Avatar f tn Did u try finding out the reason?? I know fainting can be caused by many things during pregnancy but some can lead to more complex situation.. U ahould consult ur doctor as it could be due to high or low blood pressure or dehydration etc...
Avatar m tn Two days after that, I had dinner with my friend who was HIV+. During the dinner, my friend touched my wound ( the one I got from the blood draw) by accident and my question is: if my friend had a cut on her hand and thus had some of her blood on her fingers, would I be at risk? I sincerely appreciate your help!
