Brand name and generic versions of statin drugs must carry these warnings on their labels, the FDA today announced.

I am now 67 and have tried two different popular statins( lipitor and crestor which did lower LDL about 50 pts but also lowered HDL). I could not tolerate either statin because of personality changes ie: anger and irritability all the time and severe cognitive issues with memory, reasoning and being able to focus. After stopping each statin, it has taken me longer to get back to normal mentally. It is amazing how much better I feel now that I have been off of them for 4 mos.
There have been some reports of increased liver enzymes and elevated bilirubin and jaundice with ezetimibe. It's often combined with a statin and some of the studies are of a combination of 2 drugs so it's a little confusing as to which drug has the major hepatic influence.

Crestor is a statin (rosuvastatin calcium) only, Vytorin is a statin (Simvastatin) with Zetia (ezetimibe). Statins work by controlling the production of cholesterol in your liver while Zetia works by preventing cholesterol to be absorbed in your digestive system.
Of the two, Crestor is the stronger of the two. In addition, recent trials have shown that adding Zetia does not improve the performance of Vytorin over Simvastatin alone.

It was difficult maintaining such low quantity of fat but my family supported and I could manage it for one year. However, in later period it increased to about 20 g per day. I take statin and other heart medications. I do not take meat but occassionally take chicken and fish, once in a week. I have undergone neuclear stress test for last three yesrs consequitively and no additional ischemia was reported.

In any case, statins are very safe and proving to me more safe all the time. The risk of any side effect is anywhere between 2% and 5% which classifies this as very safe. Common side effects are muscle pain and sore joints.
However, patients, particularly those with risk factors for statin-induced myopathy, should be warned of the potential for rhabdomyolysis and told to report immediately any muscle pain, muscle weakness or cramps, or dark urine. If rhabdomyolysis is suspected, the drug should be stopped immediately, and appropriate medical management should be instituted as well as a work-up of predisposing risk factors.
You could consider going for a higher dose of Lipitor, another way to go is to consider taking a drug that limits cholesterol absorption such as Ezetimibe. There is a combination drug Simvastatin and ezetimibe that may be better in controlling cholesterol. Discuss these drugs with your doctor.

The earlier mentioned side effect caused by the group of medications known as the statins, which Vytorin (ezetimibe/simvastatin) is a member of, is called rhabdomyolysis. This condition is breakdown of the muscle and has been associated with the statins as a class as a rare but serious side effect. A recent paper studied the effect of most FDA approved drugs on the inhibition of NTCP, the now known entry receptor for HBV. Ezetimibe was found to have a 50%inhibition conc of 25micromolar, while irbesartan, a commonly used angiotensin inhibitor to reduce blood pressure, was found to inhibit at 11.9 micromolar. I was put onto a strong aggressive statin (lipitor 40mg) and ezetimibe 10mg to help boost it. One act son the Liver and one on the digestive system to lower fats. I had my first attack at 46 and my disease kept progressing. I cut my sugar intake right down, took lessons in handling stress and then my disease seemed to stop. Even with high average blood pressure 140/99 - 140/103 the disease still hasn't got any worse.
I do not know is numbers now but in april ldl was 176 hdl 34 ad trig was 269. they have chaged statin to crestor and plavix to efferient. what else could be causing these blockages?
